Filming for CW’s The Flash season two is already well under way and excitement is building for fans who are anxious to see how last season’s cliffhanger plays out. When we left them, the citizens of Central City were facing destruction from the awe-inspiring singularity that formed after the defeat of Reverse Flash. With monumental devastation a distinct possibility, who knows how The Flash and his team will recover against such impossible odds?
Starring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon, and Candice Patton as Iris West, The Flash is all set for an exciting sophomore outing when it premieres next month. Joining the cast this season are newcomers Keiynan Lonsdale (Insurgent) as Wally West, Teddy Sears (Masters of Sex, American Horror Story) as Jay Garrick, and Shantel VanSanten (The Messengers) as Patty Spivot. While little is yet known about how season two will play out, we do have some fresh details to offer on the subject.
Panabaker took a break from filming The Flash season two last weekend to attend DragonCon in Atlanta. While there, she spoke with a group of journalists, including Dave Trumbore from Collider, about some of the secrets from the upcoming season. While the actress was careful not to reveal too much, we now know a little bit about what to expect from the season’s first 7 episodes.
While it has been reported that season two will feature a six month time jump, according to Panabaker, that doesn’t mean that the cliffhanger will be ignored as the new season kicks into gear.
“The season premiere will address some stuff from the finale; it’s not like there’s some title card that just says, ‘Six months later.’ We will deal with the singularity and everything that’s going on.”
This more or less jives with what we already know about this season, which will largely focus on the continuing fall out from the effects of the singularity while presumably setting up the spinoff DC's Legends of Tomorrow. To that end, Panabaker is unsure whether or not Caitlin will be making any appearances on the new spinoff, but it would make sense considering her marriage to Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) a.k.a., one half of the superhero Firestorm.
Panabaker was able to confirm, however, that Firestorm’s other half, Dr. Martin Stein, will be playing a larger role in initial episodes of The Flash season two, before he heads over to Legends:
“In episode four, I get to work a lot with Victor [Garber], which is so nice. Obviously Legends is starting their production next week, but he’ll be around for a little bit…It’s going to be impressive to see how they incorporate, just schedule-wise, everyone working together and crossovers. I would love to [make an appearance]. They have huge plans for Legends.”
Though this is all interesting information, the question on everyone’s minds is when can we expect Caitlin to make her appearance as Killer Frost? Her transition into super villainy was teased at the end of the season finale, with the briefest of glimpses of the antagonist shown (as time broke down as the singularity formed). No one is as excited for Killer Frost as Panabaker, who remained coy on the subject when asked:
“Unfortunately I don’t know when that will happen on the show. The writers will say, ‘Well this is what’s going to happen. We’re looking forward to this. This is what we’re thinking.’ And then scripts evolve, sometimes they don’t make it into the script as soon as you hope, sometimes we shoot things that don’t even make it into the show…Since we only have 42, 44 minutes, some stuff just sort of falls to the cutting-room floor. Long story short, I’m useless in terms of Killer Frost. I want it to happen very, very badly. Unfortunately I don’t know that it’s happening yet.”
Many fans are hoping for Killer Frost to make her introduction sometime in Flash season two. It's possible that Panabaker isn't allowed to speak on the subject just yet; it would make sense for Panabaker and the team behind The Flash to hold that information off as long as they can manage, after all.
Panabaker also confirmed that they’ve only shot six episodes of Flash season two so far, so most of the interview is focused on that. She did mention, however, that she’s read the script for episode seven and, from the sound of things, it’s going to be a monster. Among the things Panabaker did tease was a possible new set to be premiered in that episode:
“I’m not allowed to tell you what happens in [episode] seven. We’re shooting six right now and just got the script for seven, and seven’s pretty cool…Tyler [Bishop Harron] builds these amazing sets. It’s fun to walk on…I can’t tell you what that is either! These new sets that he built are beautiful.”
From all appearances, The Flash is shaping up for what’s sure to be a worthy second season, even if we don’t get Killer Frost just yet. The show’s new additions and the direction things appear to be headed in bode well for the series, which shattered fans high expectations with its debut season. It may be difficult to accomplish (given the quality of season one), but everything we find out about season two makes it seem as though we’re in for another fun outing, this next time around.
Season 2 of The Flash premieres Tuesday, October 6 at 8pm/7 central; Season 4 of Arrow debuts Wednesday October 7 at 8pm/7 central; Legends of Tomorrow begins in 2016.
