The Flash has the daunting task of giving its viewers a glimpse at life on two separate Earths. Barry Allen has created an alternate timeline known as Flashpoint, where the audience is sure to come across many familiar faces that aren’t quite the same. With the newest poster teasing “New Destinies. New Dangers,” The Flash is poised to be a treasure trove of DC nuggets that could satisfy even the biggest Scarlet Speedster fans.
One of the standout elements of The Flash are the relationships — from familial, to friendly, and even romantic — there’s something that makes Barry’s interactions so endearing. Just as things began to fall into place for Barry and Iris, he traveled to the past to save his mother from Reverse-Flash since he had just lost his father to Zoom. The decision sets Flashpoint events into motion. Villains old and new along with allies and friends have been teased for new encounters, but what about a love interest?
In the first two seasons, we’ve seen only a few women that have captured Barry’s attention, and one of them may be making an appearance in season 3. Monkeys Fighting Robots (h/t to CB) posted an interview with Patty Spivot actress Shantel VanSanten from a Heroes and Villains Fan Fest Fundraiser that was held in Orlando this past weekend. When asked whether or not we could see her return to The Flash, she simply replied, “There’s a very strong possibility if everything works out.”
New 52 fans will remember VanSanten’s character, Patty Spivot, as a major presence in Barry Allen’s life even though her role was greatly reduced on the TV show. While she and Barry did share a brief connection (over four episodes) before she left for Midway City, it’s not out of the question for Patty to appear at some point. In the Flashpoint event of the comics, Patty actually takes on the mantle of Hot Pursuit (Bart Allen) after stealing his suit and cosmic motorcycle. There are a few directions The Flash writers could go with a Patty Spivot return, including hints of the Science Police or Doom Patrol as part of Patty’s stint in Midway City.
In earlier previews for season 3, we’ve seen that Barry and Iris do not have much of a relationship at all since both his parents are still alive. Flashpoint has the potential to reopen several doors fans thought were sealed shut, including, perhaps, the return of Linda Park (Malese Jow)? As it stands presently, there has been no official confirmation that VanSanten will be back; but in the realm of comics, the possibilities are endless.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4 at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13.
