Who Should Play The Flash?

Today we’re presenting yet another installment of our superhero movie fantasy casting feature, this time for the still-in-development big screen adaptation of The Flash. This film has been stop-and-go (pun intended) for awhile now, with previous versions of the script having been turned in by big name writers (David S. Goyer), and some big name actors having been eyed for the role (or so rumor would have it).

As of last week we have word that The Flash is coming along at a good pace, so as the story of the ‘The World’s Fastest Man’ steps closer and closer to becoming a cinematic reality, we stop to ask ourselves:

Who should play The Flash?

THE RACE TO GLORY

The Flash is one of the oldest heroes in the DC Universe, but it would be a stretch to call him one of the most famous (despite the 1990s TV series). Sure, the character is well known by the comic book fanboy nation – and any JoBlo off the street could probably tell you that “He’s the guy in the red suit who runs really fast.” However, I’d be surprised if that same JoBlo could tell you the names of Flash’s alter egos over the years (Jay Garrick, Barry Allen and Wally West) – or if you could even find a handful of fanboys willing to tell you that The Flash is “The most awesome superhero ever!”

By current estimate, I would place The Flash just a couple notches under Iron Man (before the film came out) in terms of public recognition/love, hovering somewhere around the same plane as Green Lantern. Of course, I must acknowledge that both The Flash and Green Lantern have made serious comic book comebacks over the course of the last half decade – thanks in overwhelming part to DC Comics writer Geoff Johns, who resurrected both Silver Age Flash and Green Lantern (Barry Allen and Hal Jordan) and has written storylines for both characters that have gone on to become modern comic book classics.

Did I mention that Geoff Johns is also acting as a consultant on The Flash movie?

Like Iron Man, The Flash faces the daunting task of elevating a C-list superhero to blockbuster movie height$. There is no doubt that Iron Man got a head start in that same department by casting Robert Downey Jr. – so when casting The Flash, I say forget all this talk about “getting a no name” to play the part; in this case, name recognition is a MUST.

Back during Comic Con this year I had a chance to toss Geoff Johns a question about the treatment he did for The Flash script (which is now in the hands of screenwriter Dan Mazeau). In the Johns’ response (which you can read HERE), he alluded to several things hinting that we might be seeing Barry Allen, the “Silver Age” Flash in the movie version, instead of “Modern Age” Flash, Wally West, as many fans initially assumed. Of course this all just speculation – but it makes for one doozy of a job for those of us in the fantasy casting business!

That said, I’ll have to cast BOTH versions of The Flash just to be safe. So, if you’re interested, here are my picks for who should play Barry Allen or Wally West, based on the criteria that the actor for either role needs to be both funny and dramatic and able to exude heroism – not to mention having the physical body type of a long distance sprinter (let’s not forget that!).

[And no, Ryan Reynolds is NOT a candidate! He's already Green Lantern AND Deadpool! That's enough!]

  1. I can’t believe I’m the first person to say this but, Jeffery Donovan is by far my first choice for Barry Allen. If you don’t know who he is, check out a few episodes of Burn Notice and I think that will be enough to convince most of you. I have to agree with NPH for a Wally based movie, but at this point it looks like it’s going to be Barry. I just hope that someone involved with casting thinks of Donovan before they cast someone else.

  2. I agree with erratyc, Jeffrey Donovan would be a great choice for Barry, also maybe Bradley Cooper, his part in The A-Team was hilarious

  3. Topher seems like a pretty good Flash.

  4. I say they should do Matt Damon as the Barry Allen Flash. He’s pretty much perfect!!! And for Wally West I think NPH is pretty good. If he can bulk up, grow more hair an dye it red he would be good(I think). Also for Wally West how about Alex Pettyfer, he’s awesome(he should also dye his hair red and talk in an American accent of course). Anyways The Flash is my favorite hero and I really can’t wait till it comes out.

  5. George Eads would play a perfect flash,he has the perfect voice for hI’m and the right face

  6. I think that Ryan Reynolds would make a terrific Flash, and a true sarcastic Barry Allen

    • though he fits the part well, it might be best to give somebody else this role. ryans playing far to many super characters. All I can think of is Chris Pine as Barry Allen.

    • sorry dude thought green lantern was a good movie and all with the effects there was only one thing what made it bad ryan reynolds acting as the green lantern so if he played the flash he will be destroying to many parts of dc supers

  7. Matt Damon might be good but if u put him next to Ryan reynolds he’s a little old and fat now. But for Wally West how about james Mardsen. I think he’s great and he has experience with super hero movies as Cyclops in x men.

    • I think ur right on with cyclops from the x men. Hes already built and not to bad lookin. Plus if u have seen any comedies hes been in, u already kno he can be super hilarious. Either him or bradley cooper would be the best choice

  8. A young James Garner would have made the perfect Jay Garrick. Even the initials are the same. Perhaps we should look into cloning technologies to create the perfect cast. Maybe Steve McQueen could have played Barry Allen, Robert Redford could have played Johnny Quick, Scott Glenn for Max Mercury, and I’m still not sure who would be right for Wally West.

  9. I don’t know really why, and some fans might disagree with me a lot, but for some reason I see Jake Gyllenhaal being a flash. Say what you will but thats who I see.

  10. I think mike vogel would be a good barry allen

  11. ok where to start since i was a kid i loved the flash comics as much as batman superman green lantern spiderman the x men and more but i do want a flash movie apparently its said to come out 2013 along with a justice league movie looks like dc comics are starting to get into movies more because they only had superman and batman sequels besides that they had no other superhero films now with green lantern recently released at movies what i think they should do with the flash sorry to sound crazy i dont think they should make his costume red with the lightning things stciking out

  12. i see tom cruise as the flash

  13. chris evans i think would be good hes funny and has the looks i think

  14. Sean William Scott hands down! from dude where’s my car

  15. NPH NOW!!! You’ve seen him as Flash in the Cartoons in my opinion the man for the Job!

  16. I say Mark Valley from Boston Legal, Human Target and Harry’s Law would be a great Barry Allen

  17. I ownly have two peaple and one of them is Justen Temberlake and the other is the guy that played as the Bourne supremacy o and or the boy that plays as Jakeup from Twylight

    • ADAM BRODY i agree with bradley cooper can do a good job chris evans is currently signed to marvel so he is out same with ryan reyonalds who is lantern so if a JL movie were to come out that would make no sense and for who ever said justin timberlake are you serious nph is not nearly beastly enough to wimpy he wouldnt be a good lead hero maybe a side kick he could stick with the red hood and be a night wing if they show him in a movie but ill stand by with adam brody from the O.C. and or bradley cooper

  18. I am gonna have to agree with a few others… Bradley Cooper would be a much better fit to play Barry Allen. What I like about the Flash is his sense of humor, well that and he’s a Bad-a$$ superhero… Cooper can handle this role with ease! Plus, can you imagine Reynolds and Cooper in a Green Lantern / Flash team-up movie?! I mean come on!

  19. are u guys kidding me?? the flash is nooooo clown (barry allen) barrys flash was always and will be intelligent, quick to think before moving. unlike wally west he is the GILLIGAN of flashes. jokes stale, clumsy, a bafoon who would want to see that kind of FLASH?? not me.

  20. we need a FLASH belivable,a hero, someone who get the job done in a FLASH!! if they use wally west as modern day flash i would be highly DISAPPOINTED wally would be the fastest clown alive, stupidest bafoon alive, clumsiest fool alive. he take no situation seriously everything to him is a joke (justice league unlimted) I would seriously cry i waited 54 years to see the flash on the big screen for them to ruin my childhood superhero with a bafoon.

  21. Zack ephron or me Haha

  22. Your picks for the flash or ridiculous and stupid…stop picking geeky actors who nobody would believe could be superheroes 1 Ryan gosling 2 Jake gyllenhall ( dark hair ) 3 Mathew maconahy ( age ) 4 shilao le bouf 5 Jude law 6 channing tatum etc etc excuse the spelling but you get my drift

  23. I say put the rock lol

  24. Neil Patrick Harris should definitely play him!

  25. Bradley Cooper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. I think that Ryan gosling, Bradley cooper and the actors who portray “Jason Stackhouse” and ” Erik” from HBO’s show “True Blood” would be great candidates for the hero. I apologize for not knowing the actors names right off the bat. But I think they would be great as ” The Flash”.

  27. Honestly,I want Jim Parsons to be u
    The Flash. He’d be awesome.

  28. They should have Bradley Cooper as the flash! He would be perfect. He played a serious guy in limitless, a funny guy in A team, and a cool guy in the hangover. U need all those qualities to be the flash. And I don’t think they should make flash a kinda of funny movie like Thor or iron man. They should make it serious like dark knight. Not as serious but kind of dark. People would take the flash mor seriously. A director kinda of like zack Snyder should do it. Get zack Snyder if they can. But ther not going to hav Ryan Reynolds as the flash! He’s already green lantern! Ther already in the middle of making a justice league movie! Can hav RR just switching roles like that! Be freaking confusing! And the justice league should be serious too. Avengers tried to put to many jokes in ther. Justice league will be better dark and gritty. And so will the flash
