Who Should Play The Flash?

Today we’re presenting yet another installment of our superhero movie fantasy casting feature, this time for the still-in-development big screen adaptation of The Flash. This film has been stop-and-go (pun intended) for awhile now, with previous versions of the script having been turned in by big name writers (David S. Goyer), and some big name actors having been eyed for the role (or so rumor would have it).

As of last week we have word that The Flash is coming along at a good pace, so as the story of the ‘The World’s Fastest Man’ steps closer and closer to becoming a cinematic reality, we stop to ask ourselves:

Who should play The Flash?

The Flash is one of the oldest heroes in the DC Universe, but it would be a stretch to call him one of the most famous (despite the 1990s TV series). Sure, the character is well known by the comic book fanboy nation – and any JoBlo off the street could probably tell you that “He’s the guy in the red suit who runs really fast.” However, I’d be surprised if that same JoBlo could tell you the names of Flash’s alter egos over the years (Jay Garrick, Barry Allen and Wally West) – or if you could even find a handful of fanboys willing to tell you that The Flash is “The most awesome superhero ever!”

By current estimate, I would place The Flash just a couple notches under Iron Man (before the film came out) in terms of public recognition/love, hovering somewhere around the same plane as Green Lantern. Of course, I must acknowledge that both The Flash and Green Lantern have made serious comic book comebacks over the course of the last half decade – thanks in overwhelming part to DC Comics writer Geoff Johns, who resurrected both Silver Age Flash and Green Lantern (Barry Allen and Hal Jordan) and has written storylines for both characters that have gone on to become modern comic book classics.

Did I mention that Geoff Johns is also acting as a consultant on The Flash movie?

Like Iron Man, The Flash faces the daunting task of elevating a C-list superhero to blockbuster movie height$. There is no doubt that Iron Man got a head start in that same department by casting Robert Downey Jr. – so when casting The Flash, I say forget all this talk about “getting a no name” to play the part; in this case, name recognition is a MUST.

Back during Comic Con this year I had a chance to toss Geoff Johns a question about the treatment he did for The Flash script (which is now in the hands of screenwriter Dan Mazeau). In the Johns’ response (which you can read HERE), he alluded to several things hinting that we might be seeing Barry Allen, the “Silver Age” Flash in the movie version, instead of “Modern Age” Flash, Wally West, as many fans initially assumed. Of course this all just speculation – but it makes for one doozy of a job for those of us in the fantasy casting business!

That said, I’ll have to cast BOTH versions of The Flash just to be safe. So, if you’re interested, here are my picks for who should play Barry Allen or Wally West, based on the criteria that the actor for either role needs to be both funny and dramatic and able to exude heroism – not to mention having the physical body type of a long distance sprinter (let’s not forget that!).

[And no, Ryan Reynolds is NOT a candidate! He’s already Green Lantern AND Deadpool! That’s enough!]

  1. I have to say that Fillion is a great actor and all but let’s be serious here he looks nothing like Barry Allen. Barry Allen needs to be played by either Jensen Ackles or Josh Duhamel! As for Wally West I would love to see Thomas Dekker as a young Wally.

    • I think that Seann William Scott, Ryan Gosling, Scott Porter, James Badge Dale or Patrick Wilson should be the flash as wally west an than get someone as the older flash aka “barry allen” probably bruce willlis lol. but look into it

  2. I think Filion would be a better Wally West and Neil Patrick Harris would be a better Barry Allen. So I’d switch those two, but other than that I like your lists.

Prior to being cast as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, Ryan Reynolds was my first choice to play Wally West/Flash. But you’re right Deadpool AND Green Lantern. That’s enough.

  3. Nice work kel

  4. That’s an easy one…Jake Jyllenhall. He’s got the stature and the workout he put into preparing for “Prince of Persia…” makes hime ideal for the role. Jake gets my vote.

  5. yes, NPH would be awesome- as Barry Allen- In fact I’m pretty sure your wally west pic is actually barry allen.

And hey, NPH has already played Barry once (In new frontier)

  6. Hello inventors, i would love to play the flash pick me pick me pick me pick me

  7. Personally, I can’t help but picture Chris Owens as Wally West. He does have a bit of a range than can cover the comic to the dramatic.

Barry Allen — I’m just drawing a blank on.

And Neil Patrick Harris? No, I can’t see him as Wally West. The Trickster, sure, but not Wally West.

  8. Okay, I was just reading the article “Who Should Play Captain America?” (yeah, I’m a little behind on things here), and I saw who could be a really good choice for Barry Allen: Collin Ferguson of “Eureka.”

  9. How about Micheal Weatherly from NCIS. Either that or get Weatherly for Captain America

  10. Mark-Paul Gosselaar can make an awesome character playing “The Fastest Man Alive” on the big screen. He stars in RAISING THE BAR and SAVED BY THE BELL. He never starred in a superhero movie before. I think it will be a great idea for Mark to make a quality choice from Greg Berlanti to see him if he can play “The Man who can run faster than a speeding car”. “The Man who can run faster than a speeding car” is Police Officer Barry Allen of Central City, Missouri. When I watch the FLASH series back in the 90's on SCI-FI John Wesley Shipp did played the original FLASH (The Silver Age) Barry Allen. Iam glad they didn't use Wally West (Because, DC decided to have the Silver-Age) Character The Flash/Barry Allen in that series for John Wesley Ship to Police Scientist Barry Allen.

  12. I think Mark-Paul Gosselaar from “Raising by the Bar” and “Saved by the Bell” can make a great Flash role. I choose this guy to play him. Everyone likes Mark who played Zack Morris from “Saved by the Bell” and he will make an acting role playing “The Fastest Man Alive” on the big screen.

  14. I think they should have all three of the Flash's in the movie. It could be an epic story revolving around Vandal Savage and his fight against the Flash legacy. Jay would be the elder statesman, whom savage crippled and Barry would die fighting Savage. That leaves it up to Wally to complete the task.

  15. I think josh duhamel would be great for the flash

    • If it was Bart it would have to be Kyle Gallner. He played him relly well on Smallville. It wouldnt happen because his success with Nightmare on Elm Street though

  16. Only one person…Chris Pine

  17. Ive seen Adam Brody’s stuff in the past and think he would be perfect for Wally. Who cares about “star power”!? Who the **** was Chis Pine before he did Star Trek? And what about Chris Hemsworth? A ten minute role in Star Trek now he’s THOR!!!! Give it to Adam! He WILL make that character

  18. I think James Rohday should be The Flash! His perfomance as Shawn Spencer on the show Psyche is why I think that, and he could easily bulk up… Although not to sure about apperance wise.

  19. Uh… what about the ‘voice of flash’? Funny, and already a connection with DC. Michael Rosenbaum….

  20. I agree with rabbit93. Weatherly would make a great Wally West. He has the attitude, the basic build (emphasis on basic), and he’s an overall good actor. Barry Allen tho……that’s a tough choice.

  21. i think either zachary levi or adam brody would be perfect, and if i could choose id want them to do bart allen he’s my favorite flash
