5 Actors Who Could Play The Flash in ‘Justice League’

Flash Movie Actors Justice League The Flash; the Scarlet Speedster; the Fastest Man Alive. DC has once again given the title to Barry Allen for the time being, but every gathering of DC's greatest heroes has required a man or woman blessed with superspeed. With the upcoming Justice League movie, it's practically a guarantee that The Flash will be making his big-screen debut. As always, the question of casting now arises. We've put realistic options above outlandish 'dream-casting' in determining our list, based on the apparent tone and direction that Warner Bros. is taking with their superhero films. Here are our picks for 5 Actors Who Could Play The Flash in Justice League.

Liam McIntyre

Liam McIntyre as The Flash Australian-born Liam McIntyre may not be a name or face everyone will recognize, but fans of Starz's Spartacus: Vengeance know that the titular star (and self-professed 'nerd') definitely deserves more credit than he's receiving. From a visual standpoint, McIntyre fits the demands: blonde hair, blue eyes, and at 6'2" is imposing enough to not just sell a crippling punch, but convey the strength and authority of a slave-turned-freedom fighter. Despite the dark and gruesome tone of Spartacus, McIntyre has shown himself to be the kind of extroverted glad-hander with the fan community that both Barry Allen and Warner Bros. will need to get fans on board, and excited. While his resume isn't as long or glowing as other of our contenders, if Warner Bros. decides to go with a lesser-known actor, don't be surprised if McIntyre's name comes up.

Joel Edgerton

Joel Edgerton The Flash A few years ago Joel Edgerton wasn't well-known outside of Australia, but these days it's hard to find a superhero movie that doesn't have the actor rumored to be in consideration. To this point, however, he has yet to sign on the dotted line. It's Edgerton's ability to build intriguing characters out of lacking scripts (see: The Thing) that holds the most promise - a skill capitalized on for Zero Dark Thirty (2012), using the actor's brief role for most of their advertising. With a standout lead performance in Warrior (2011) and upcoming roles alongside Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender in Jane Got a Gun (2013), and Leo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby (2013), Edgerton's star is definitely on the rise. If the filmmakers are looking to get the attention of discriminating moviegoers, not just mass audiences, Edgerton would fit the bill. Provided he doesn't sign with Marvel first.

Chris Pine

Chris Pine as The Flash

Chris Pine may have a lot on his plate at the moment - as Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams' rebooted Star Trek, and now Jack Ryan - but Ryan Reynolds proved even the most sought-after stars can find time to suit up for superhero action. Pine was in the running to play Hal Jordan before Reynolds snagged the role, but the qualities that made him an ideal Jordan also apply to Barry Allen - explaining the pair's lasting friendship. WB shouldn't miss out twice. Since Reynolds snagged the emerald ring first, it seems fitting that Pine should be cast as The Flash - the hero many thought Reynolds was born to play - although as the reliable do-gooder Allen, instead of wisecracking Wally West. Pine's got the smarts to sell the athletic hero and hardworking scientist, while possessing enough humor (and star power) to get fans begging for a stand-alone movie.

Armie Hammer

Armie Hammer as The Flash

His name has been brought up in Justice League discussion as the next Batman, but we can't help but see Armie Hammer as a different League member. With a standout performance in The Social Network (2010) as spoiled socialites, we want to see what he could do with an actual good guy. Hammer's blockbuster-cred will be dispelled or proven with this summer's The Lone Ranger (2013), portraying the titular blonde-haired, blue-eyed lawman begrudgingly embarking on a quest for justice as a masked vigilante. The shades of Barry in Ranger Reid should already be clear (if you have doubts, watch the trailer), so a strong performance alongside Johnny Depp's Tonto will prove he's a leading man who can share a spotlight with big personalities. Should DC and Warner Bros. choose to cast young, there's no better choice than Hammer.

Patrick Wilson

Patrick Wilson as The Flash

The similarities between the 'gee-whiz' personality and reluctant heroism of Night Owl (a.k.a. Dan Dreiberg) in Zack Snyder's Watchmen and the wholesome nature of Barry Allen are clear to any comic fan. So in some ways, audiences have already seen Wilson tackle the subtler aspects of Allen's character - as one of a troubled film's bright spots. He may not have the blonde locks, but Wilson has the right mix of likeability, good looks, and quiet humility that a big screen incarnation of Allen needs. Since he's made a habit in his career of stealing scenes from established actors, Wilson has proven he can carry his own alongside the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Henry Cavill. It's too early to tell if DC and Warner Bros. will wish to take The Flash's JL role and possible solo movie as seriously as Batman and Superman, but we'd bet Wilson could handle it, either way.

Conclusion

Flash Movie Actors Justice League That concludes our list of actors that we feel could play the wholesome, shy, but ultimately devoted and fiercely loyal Barry Allen on screen. As past superhero films have proven, any actor can by made to look the part with an intense fitness plan and some CG assistance. But sporting a bow tie - that takes serious skill. 1. Chris Pine? Wow, I never even thought about that. He would be perfect! :)

    • I was told a good two years ago that WB was looking at Pine but couldn’t verify. I included it one of my articles back then (pre-Green Lantern).

      • Some might call it blasphemy, but I think the same actor working for both Barry and Hal actually makes a lot of sense.

*That is NOT an endorsement of Ryan Reynolds for Flash.

        • I’ve always wanted Ryan Reynolds as Barry Allen and Chris Pine as Hal Jordan.

  2. *Superman / Clark Kent – Henry Cavill
    *Batman / Bruce Wayne –
    *Wonder Woman – Olivia Wilde
*Green Lantern / Hal Jordan – Ryan Reynolds
    *Flash – Bradley Cooper
    *Aquaman – Ryan Gosling

    • I can kinda see all you wrote, but Olivia Wilde. She is way too small @ 5’7″. After all WW is an Amazon.

      • Not gonna find alot of women that are taller than that. Thats considered a tall woman!

        • Not only is she small but she is so frail looking. Wonder Woman is an Amazon. They are beastly women. Tall, strong, and beastly! None of which Olivia Wilde is close to resembling.

    • Great choices. Bradly Cooper is always great, Reynolds just needs a good story, Olivia Wild is sexy as, Gosling also always great.

It would be hard to stay away from a film with such a great lineup.

Then again I thought that about Gangster Squad.

  3. I like Chris Pine as Flash, it wouldn’t be far off from his Capt. Kirk and I think Armie Hammer could be a good Batman. Wonder Woman is a tough role to cast, but Olivia Wilde would be fine… Bring back Reynolds as GL or recast for John Stewart in which case I would go with maybe Anthony Mackie…

    • Dude he would make an amazing John Stewart!

    • John Stewart maybe Tyrese Gibson and WW I think Adrianne Palicki did a good job on that NBC WW pilot.

    • @Kevin C: you know he’s playing Falcon in Captain America 2 right?

      • Now that you mention it, I did know that… but I still think its a good casting choice… after all Ryan Reynolds played Wade Wilson and we all know about Cap himself…

    • Or David Ramsey, IMO.

  4. Jack Black is the Flash.

    • This.

    • But is he?

      • Spoiler – no.

  5. Joel McHale would make a great flash, Hes got the body and height and he’s funny and quirky which is a big must for the flash

  6. Weird i never knew Chris pine was in the running for green lantern, but I always thought he could’ve made a 1000 Times better lead in that role!

    • Yeah, same here. He’s got Hal Jordan written all over him. Don’t think it would have worked with some of the script’s tone, but….that’s not his fault.

  7. I think Armie Hammer could be a great Flash.

Chris Pine would be good too, but I think it’s a little better to have someone less attached to already big movie franchises (if that makes sense)

  8. Bradley Cooper for The Flash! And make Batman a lil older than all the other JL members! You know how ubserdly alsome Michael Keaton playing Batman would be!

  9. Aw man, I was hoping to see Michael Rosenbaum on your list.

I mean, he has been doing the voice of Flash (Wally West version) since 2001. His personality is more Flash-like than any of the actors listed above, and I just can’t really see anybody else doing it.

    • I dug his voice performance as Wally the wisecracker, but can’t see him sharing anything tied to Barry Allen’s version.

Personally, my vote would be to consider him for Guy Gardner in ‘The Green Lantern Corps’

      • Yeah, he is definitely not Barry. He is Wally.

Lol he could do funny Guy, but it would only seem that he was faking the GG personality. For somebody like Guy, you need somebody who can pull off being somebody that dense lol

    • I agree with this. Just suggested this before seeing your post.

      • Didnt NPH also voice the flash?

        • He only voiced Flash in Justice League: The New Frontier. Everything else has basically been Rosenbaum. Although, George Eads has been voicing Barry Allen in Young Justice.

  10. Bradley Cooper!!! Chris Pine is okay, but I’d prefer him to be Aquaman… haha

  11. I would be fine with all your picks. I think I’d like Pine the most. But my favourite choice would be Gosling as the Flash. I’m not shure if he is affordable. But I think he would be awesome. He can be serious and funny. He Show both. And he has the body and look to be great in a tight red suit.

    • I don’t remember Ryan Gosling being funny in any of his films, it almost seems like he plays the same guy

      • Crazy stupid love

        • I haven’t seen that one but I honestly don’t consider him funny

      • Barry Allen is serious just like Ryan Gosling in his roles but still prefer Bradley Cooper!

        • I also like B.Cooper, so far he has delivered some good roles with charisma which me and others out there think he`s the right choice, hopefully

          • Lars and the real girl (2007). But yeah. He would just be my personal choice. We will see how it turns out in the end. He’s definitely not the funniest person, or at least doesn’t seems to be. But i’m sure he would pull that off.

  12. Barry Allen: Ryan Reynolds
    Wally West: Michael Rosenbaum

    • F**ck ryan reynolds!
      hes ruined enough heroes

      • I disagree!

      • I’ve wanted Ryan Reynolds to play Barry Allen for a long time. I was downright pissed when he was chosen for Hal Jordan. That’s BS casting right there (along with a BS movie). I wanted Chris Pine for Hal Jordan.

    • So you wanna have Ryan Reynolds play the Flash in a movie that’s presumably gonna have some version of Green Lantern in it? That’s not confusing at all…

      • ^This. Don’t really get bringing him up. And for the record, Reynolds IS Wally West.

        • Agreed

        • No, Michael Rosenbaum is :) lol The same way that Mark Hamill is the Joker. Some things were just meant to be.

      • Good Lord, I hope that they discard everything from that movie. Just bury it the same way Wolverine Origins was.

  13. While I’m agreeing with Roguedork19 on his Michael Rosenbaum pick for the Flash. I’ll put in my two cents on Serinda Swan as Wonder Woman.

    • She definitely looks the part (though she is still kind of short). She didn’t really do it for me as Zatanna in Smallville.

      • Same.

  14. Chris Pine ..hands down !

  15. IMHO Liam could pull it off. A little tall at 6’2 but not a deal breaker. Key points being his general appearance(guy screams Barry Allen) and his age(29 or 30 I believe) the perfect age for a multi-picture superhero franchise.

    • I’m coming around on him more and more. But I’d also be with cody’s next comment that he could pull off an Aquaman, since the new incarnation of him has plenty in common with a Roman warrior.

      • I see him more as Kyle Rayner. But he could probably pull of Barry too.

  16. Pine has always been my pick for flash.
Liam would make a good aquaman.
And I hope youre joking about patrick wilson, no just no.

  17. Patrick doe? No thanks. No more superhero movies involving him pls.

  18. Wilson or Hammer

  19. Don’t dip your toe into the water, by picking actors and actresses one by one, dive in and cast the whole Justice League!

    (Musts)
    Superman/Clark Kent – Henry Cavil
Batman/Bruce Wayne – Christian Bale or JGL
Wonder Woman/Diana Prince – Erica Durance or Megan Fox
Green Lantern/Hal Jordan – Ryan Reynolds
Flash/Barry Allen – Chris Pine or Zac Efron
    (Optional)
Black Canary/Dinah Lance – Yvonne Strahovski
    Aquaman/Arthur Curry – Justin Hartley

And I would like Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow, but that isn’t likely because they don’t want his character leaving the non-super-powered neighborhood. Everybody says they can’t have Christian Bale’s Batman in the Justice League because “he doesn’t play well with others” but in TDKR he tracks down Catwoman for help, and fights alongside the police officers in the street. In the Dark Knight he calls on Lucius Fox to use the devise with all the blue screens for help. And we need Yvonne’s Black Canary and Erica’s Wonder Woman because comics have been getting referred to as sexist and DC will bet Marvel’s Avengers’ amount of girls on their original roster. And Zac Efron or Chris Pine will also get teenage girls to go see it. BUT, YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE THE TEAM TOO BIG!!!!! because then you won’t be able to develop characters as deep as Marvel did and the story may become hard to follow!

    • Megan Fox? /slaps forehead.

You want a piece of eye candy who can’t beat a block of wood in an acting contest to play our Amazonian Princess?

Bale is also not an option for Batman and you listed Black Canary before martian Manhunter?

      -3 for you.

  20. Hhmmmm….still thinking. Barry Allen as Flash, for sure, but still scratching my head over the perfect actor for the portrayal. I do know we need a Flash movie, and another Green Lantern movie (Reynolds again as Hal Jordan…just fix the problems like bad script, dump the bedroom scenes and cornball humor). Sinestro plot-line is too good to lose out on. Or how about Sinestro and Professor Zoom (Reverse Flash) against Hal and Barry in a team-up movie? Can’t get a more awesome and evenly-matched set of contenders for a super-sized cage match than that!

    • I saw the names Megan Fox and Zac Efron in your cast list and therefore i cant take anything you say seriously.

    • @Goldilocks: I’m with you 100%. The Screen Rant Underground cast and I mentioned doing a team-up film with Barry and Hal since they’re a fantastic duo, but I do think they could work in their own environments.

If the next GL film (with Reynolds, like you said) goes the Sinestro route, that’s more than enough reason to bring in John Stewart or Guy Gardner to swell the Sector 2814 ranks, against an awesome villain and his army, no less.

The Flash could build off plenty, especially if the writers build out Heat Wave or another Rogue into a formidable enough foe to maybe call on GL or WW. Save Reverse Flash for the sequel, and things getting REALLY serious.

  21. I pick Mark-Paul Gosselaar to play “The Fastest Man Alive” and he makes an awesome character role. That will be a great idea for him to land on the big screen.

  22. Your choices are ridiculous. The Flash needs to be athletic. Joel Edgerton?????

  23. I could see Bradley Cooper or Chris Pine as the Flash. Joel Edgerton, not so much. I could, however, see him as a pretty good Batman. I hope DC can dig themselves out of the whole they got themselves into and make a Justice League movie on par with Avengers

  24. Some of those are not bad but I don’t know if I’m 100% sold on any of them and wondering if there isn’t someone better. Unfortunately I don’t have any suggestions on who the perfect person would be.

And Patrick Wilson is the perfect Hank Pym, not Flash.

AND……would people PLEASE stop listing Bale as playing Batman?!!! He is done with the role, gone, moved on and will not be returning. Only by an act of Nolan would Bale even think about considering it and Nolan is not going to be directing JL. So get over it and move on already.

    • With you on the Bale, man. I wonder how many people saying that nobody but Bale could ever play Batman as well were the same ones criticizing his casting in the first place…

  25. I hate how people keep bringing up Olivia Wylde, Adrian Palicki, or blah!!! Megan Fox to play Wonder Woman. Gina Corano is a former MMA fighter and has both the beauty and Braun to carry the role. Just watch the film Haywire of her beating down Channing Tatum in the opening scene and you will realize she is the only actress who should be cast to play Diana.

  26. Best in the world..If JL is on par with avengers then im going to be very dissapointed, I found avengers to be a bore, massivly overated, JL could smash that easily if done right, cos in terms of superheros, DC has the hardest hitters..

  27. The only one I agree with is Chris Pine, the other eh not so much.

  28. Has anyone seen Philip Winchester in Strike Back? I always thought he’d make a good Aquaman but he’d probably be a fit for The Flash too. But from this list I like Armie Hammer the best!

  29. Batman – Armie Hammer
    Wonder Woman – Gina Carani
Flash – ( go Wally West) NPH
GL – (go John Stewart) Harry Lennox (Dollhouse, Man of Steel)
