‘Five-Year Engagement’ Trailer: More Heart Than Humor

Five Year Engagement Trailer Five Year Engagement Trailer: More Heart Than Humor

Jason Segel is seeing his star rise higher than ever thanks to his revival of The Muppets, but the comedic actor from camp-Apatow has previously left his mark on the big screen, in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man. Segel will next headline the comedy The Five-Year Engagement alongside Emily Blunt – a comedic look at the often-treacherous journey that a couple makes to the alter of marriage.

The film is being directd by Segel’s frequent collaborative partner Nicholas Stoller (Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek) and includes a cast of familiar faces from the big and small screens, including Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation), Alison Brie (Community), Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) and Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man). Check out a brief synopsis for the film below:

From the filmmakers that brought you Bridesmaids, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Knocked Up,  THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT takes a hilarious look at an engaged couple that keeps getting tripped up on their long walk down the aisle.

Now check out the trailer for The Five-Year Engagement:

Don’t be fooled by the lack of laughs in that trailer – this looks like one of those Apatow-house creations that is going to be much heavier on sentiment than raunchy comedy. It reminds me of  the Adam Sandler/Apatow collaboration, Funny People, which was marketed as a team-up of comiedic heavyweights, but was actually a much more earnest, serious, movie about the lives of comedians.

The Five-Year Engagement could end up being a smart and earnest look at relationships and the struggles couples go through to be together (see: Like Crazy) – but if people get the impression that they’re in for sex jokes and morbid humor (i.e., old people dying) then they could end up being disappointed.

The Five-Year Engagement will be in theaters on April 27, 2012

Why did Jason Segel have a huge beard at the end? And a crossbow in the house? Whaaaaat?

This kind of drama-comedies are become a bit too polished and familiar. Feels like this is a bit of a predictable paint-by-numbers story.
I also find Segel quite creepy and unlikeable, plus he looks really rough and haggard in this film (maybe that’s intentional?).

Dude, Kofi. That didn’t get you laughing? When the mother said to the girl at the funeral, “this is why we don’t delay weddings” – I laughed my ass off.

I thought that was a very funny trailer. At the beginning, I cringed when she did that annoying scream in the car. But, when it ended I was pleasantly surprised. Segel has become one of my favorite comedic actors with ‘HIMYM’, ‘Sarah Marshall’, and he was by far one of the funniest people in ‘Knocked Up’.

I just saw this movie at a prescreening…definitely a good mix of heart and humor.
