With the release of the sci-fi blockbuster Terminator Salvation looming, the inevitable first and early reviews for the movie have been made available. And the words are not as positive as you might be hoping or thinking.
There aren’t enough reviews to even call this even a handful, but the three that there are, from Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and a college website - “One of these things is not like the others…” – join together for an overall verdict of “mixed.” Variety and College Times are quite positive (with reservations), but THR is… well, let’s just say less positive about it. Check out some excerpts from the trio of reviews:

Variety
Darker, grimmer and more stylistically single-minded than its two relatively giddy predecessors, “Terminator Salvation” boasts the kind of singular vision that distinguished the James Cameron original, the full-throttle kinetics of “Speed” and an old-fashioned regard for human (and humanoid) heroics. Only pic’s relentlessly doomsday tone — accessorized by helmer McG’s grimy, gun-metal palette — might keep auds from flocking like lemmings to the apocalypse.
McG… exhibits an unexpected flair for the dreadful, abrupt and awesome. What we get here — which was perhaps missing on the relatively sunny mental landscapes of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” and “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” — is a sense of real horror: When humans are snatched up like Cheez-Doodles by skyscraper-sized Go-bots, there’s no slo-mo relief or stalling. Stuff happens as it might were the world actually overtaken by demonic appliances.
Christian Bale… is, once again, a movie star playing second fiddle. Heath Ledger stole “The Dark Knight” away from him and Sam Worthington (who will appear in Cameron’s “Avatar” this Christmas) heists “Terminator Salvation” from Bale…
McG’s direction is always intelligent… The script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris occasionally goes off the rails… the obligatory borrowing from the previous movies (”Come with me if you want to live,” “I’ll be back …”) tend to upset the mood created within McG’s bleached-out world, which is very deliberate and doesn’t need the comic relief.
The Hollywood Reporter
The machines rise to the occasion. Too bad the dramatic element’s just as robotic.
…while incoming director McG (the “Charlie’s Angels” movies) certainly gets a rise out of the machinery in the post-apocalyptic thriller, there’s little sign of life where the flatly executed human component is concerned.
Although director McG manages to keep the machinery humming 18 years after James Cameron’s “Judgment Day” and its liquid metal raised the F/X stakes considerably, anchoring it in any sort of satisfying dramatic context is another story.
“Rise of the Machine” scripters John Brancato & Michael Ferris fail to give Bale and Worthington much opportunity to stand out from all the monochromatic rubble…
But at the end of the day, despite the still-potent landscape provided by cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, production designer Martin Laing and visual effects supervisor Charles Gibson — the film is dedicated to the late Stan Winston, who designed the first T-800 — and that rumbling, propulsive Danny Elfman score, an inescapable truth remains: It’s just not the same without the Governator.
College Times
Does the series still fare well even with the time change and nearly complete cast makeover? What may come as a surprise to many is yes, Terminator: Salvation is still a good entry and a marked improvement over its third predecessor that may not exactly set the sci-fi genre ablaze with its effects or plot line but progresses the saga in an interesting direction with good action to boot.
Perhaps the biggest mistakes that McG’s entry makes is based more on lack of innovation and ambition. Terminator: Salvation is definitely big and spectacular as an action sci-fi movie, yet it lacks the punch and complete terror that came with the first two entries.
Terminator: Salvation has a lot of great action sequences that effectively ramp up in the amount of effects and fights seen on screen. Tensions run high when a massive robot starts to take human prisoners or through a one-on-one showdown between human versus robot. It is non-stop and gritty…
All in all, neither action nor Terminator fans should be displeased with McG’s work. Anyone expecting a genre-defining, science fiction film as explosive as the first two Terminators, though, are going in with too high of expectations.
Although these are only three of the hundreds of reviews that will eventually be published about the new Terminator, it’s still a bit on the disappointing side to see so many weaknesses pointed out. Obviously since it’s the guy who gave us the Charlie’s Angels movies who’s bringing us this film, it’s not going to be one of the all-time classics (like the first two in the series are). But from the trailers it really does look like one amazing movie.
That’s skilled trailer editors, for ya’…
I expect the movie to fall somewhere in between the level of Terminator 2 and a silly, over-the-top throwaway movie. At the very least it will be an entertaining movie, especially if you just treat it as what it essentially is – a summer blockbuster.
If you want to read the full reviews highlighted in this post, you can head over to Variety, THR and College Times.
What do you make of the mixed nature of the first reviews for Terminator Salvation? Is it what you expected from the movie?
Terminator Salvation is scheduled to open this Thursday in the US, and on June 3rd in the UK.

Thanks Jago, I’m gonna check that tmrw!
Vid, I agree,,,
I think that Mcg doesn’t have enough confidence in his own script so he’s using Arnold as a safety net to cover his end o-butt.
IGN reviews can be crappy sometimes but for movies that I end up liking they are pretty on par with my thoughts, why would I look up reviews of Dragonball Z?
All I’ll say for now is dial down your expectations. That’s NOT what I wanted to say about this… :-\
Vic
Well it can’t be worse than T3….at least I hope not
Told ya the movie will suck. McG just can’t direct and that’s it.
Vic, worse than Wolverine?
Oh well, no surprise that it doesn’t come close to T2, but disappointing that it won’t be too satisfying. BUT (here’s the silver lining) the movie already accomplished its MOST IMPORTANT role: Bringing hype to the series to motivate them to release a remastered Blu Ray of T2… WOOOTT!!! Can’t wait for the Skynet Edition! Should be shipping out today…
@ Matt K
Vic didn’t say “I threw up a little in my mouth.” So that means no, not worse than T3…
Why are you all suprised the movie sucks? It’s directed by McG and there’s no Governator in it. This movie was bound to suck.
Wow,only person that I agree with on here is Daniel F.It didn’t matter how well Christian did in this movie, the critics were bound to give him a bad review. They freakin love to hate him,it doesn’t matter how well he performs!!!! He is THE ONLY actor that gets me excited about the movies,he’s an actor’s actor, and he’s THE BEST IMO.
If I hear another person say the co-star stole the show from Bale,I’m gonna pound my head into the pavement,F*ck!!!!!!!!! They had it in for him ever since the “rant” and McG is just an easy target for fodder anyways,so it was inevitable. They also don’t wanna give him(McG)any street cred at the moment, cause they feel he hasn’t “proved” himself worthy yet. Bad reviews or not, this is gonna be a great movie, and the fans are the ultimate judges really.I’ll wait to hear from them. Besides, some critics are in the tank for the Directors, and actors that they personally like anyways, and because Christian is not your “typical” Hollywood celeb,he’s become a target for curious, nasty, and snoopy people who don’t even know him,but would rather define him by the characters he’s played. Christian Bale continues to be an unwritten novel, and he has a lot of blank pages that are quickly being filled up with opinions of people who are just being mean and judgmental, and are analyzing him all the time. Just because a person doesn’t put their personal lives out there for the world to rummage through, people tend to make up false rumors about who they think he is,and how he might be in his private life.Yes,he’s a very private person, and he likes to keep it that way. What saddens me as a fan,is few people even knew who he was six years ago,and Batman Begins, began to put him on the map as an actor. He’s a veteran actor of more than 20 years, but all people choose to define him for is the infamous “rant”.I’ve waited for years for him to reach the status that he’s at now, only to have my short-lived happiness dashed against the rocks in one fell swoop. Thanks a lot TMZ,and the ingrates who sold you the tape,I hope you all rot in HATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good reviews … bad reviews … I’m still there.
But I will, as Vic says, lower my expectations … just like I did for Wolverine and you know what? I enjoyed it.
Will be seeing it Thursday night and creating my video review for it but can understand the mixed reviews. Almost sounds like they were confused which direction to go, keep it more dark or add some humorous recognizable mentions from the originals.
People seem to be hoping for something amazing like T2, or the Dark Knight. That’s just not going to happen, but I’m sure it’ll be a fun enough film if all expectations are lowered sufficiently. I did that for Wolverine and ended up really enjoying it.
I just hope it’s better than T3 which had some good action scenes, but overall came off like a stupid parody.
Looking forward to Vic’s review.
Guys,
I did NOT, I repeat NOT say “it sucks.” I just said “lower your expectations” as in “it’s not up to the level of the first two.”
It’s better than T3.
It’s better than Wolverine.
And lest anyone accuse me of being a reviewer looking to bash McG – I was actually PULLING for this movie… I wanted it to be the one where McG could tell all the haters “in your face!”
It’a a good summer action flick, but not up to the storytelling and emotional standards set by T1 & T2.
Vic
Vic – thanks for the clarification.
In no way did I expect this film to meet the standards set by T1 & T2 . . . but neither did the TV show, and yet it was awesome fun, imo – and my favorite series while it aired. So I’ve a feeling that I’ll feel pretty much the same about this movie. I just want to enjoy something solid from my favorite film franchise. Hopefully it will work out as I’ve been anticipating. We’ll see!
I don’t really trust any critic out there….I went to see Watchmen because all the reviews were great but when I saw it I almost fell asleep….the acting was good and had great effects but I didn’t feel anything after watching it. Looking at all the pics and trailers for Salvation it really looks GREAT!…Also Bale is a hell of an actor…..every movie he’s does is awesome, from American Psycho to Equilibrium, and of course Batman….cmon would he be involved in a crappy movie after the Dark Knight???..I really doubt it. Can’t wait to see it!!!!!
Ok Jago, I hope Terminator salvation the vid game is good I just picked it up,,,
Looks good , I won’t get a chance to play it after work.
I am so hoping that this movie is good, but as soon as I saw the motorcycle terminators I had my doubts. I just hope that they’re not vidicated.
BTW, I really enjoyed Wolverine. I don’t know why it keeps getting so much sh*t. Great Sfx, lots of action and we got Jackman as Wolvie again. I’ll take that any day.
OOps, I meant “VINDICATED.” Wish I could edit my posts.
@andy
The spx and cgi in wolverine was horrible. So many parts looked obviously fake which is unacceptable for a movie of this day and age.
Sfx*
To each their own, Cat. I really enjoyed it and I really don’t care how many people diss it. I’m hoping for more Wolvie movies with Jackman and Schreiber.
@790
Lol… You should tell me if its good i gotta wait till after work to pick it up… I wasn’t able to get it this morning.
@Jago, I’ll definitely let you know what I think of the game!
Vic where is your review man?????
You are the critic that I agree with the most so what you think about it is most likely similar to what I’ll think about it. I WANNA READ THE REVIEW NAO!
Haven’t seen the movies, but umm sorry to tell you guys the game is awful. It’s about 4 hours long and they cut out the online features due to time constraints. The gameplay is good, but the graphics are unimpressive and there is no story telling. The entire story is pointless and could be summed up in roughly one sentence. There are really little to no cinematic moments in it instead sometimes your told what happened instead of seeing a visual story moment. It had potential to be good, but was a victim of to little time.
The game tooo???
Daniel F, have you already beaten the game single story mode ?
I didn’t like the 360 patch the game forced me to install. Select a avatar, kiss my a,,,
Yea beat it already. It is a very short game. Not sure if you played the Wolverine game which was actually good, but it’s even shorter than that. Some people have reported that they beat it in only 3 hours it took me four. Once you’ve beaten it there is no need to ever play it again. No replay what so ever and you can get all the achievements in one play through.
Yeah your right Daniel, it has a good 3 person vibe but I can tell they pumped this one out pretty quickly.
Beware Jago, its not anything close to Bioshock or Halo3!!!
@ Daniel F
Bale looking like he’s straining to do a poo for the duration of a film is much better? The point IS to laugh at Arnold. Sorry but Bale is one of todays dime a dozen GQ oscar baiters. If it wasn’t Bale it would’ve been Hugh Jackman or DiCaprio or someone else like that. They’re all interchangable. Arnold and all his ilk who can’t act make up for it with unique personalities and actual charisma. There’s only one Arnold, there’s only one Sly, only one Bruce. If Bale had turned down the role movie wouldn’t be any different.
