With the release of the sci-fi blockbuster Terminator Salvation looming, the inevitable first and early reviews for the movie have been made available. And the words are not as positive as you might be hoping or thinking.
There aren’t enough reviews to even call this even a handful, but the three that there are, from Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and a college website - “One of these things is not like the others…” – join together for an overall verdict of “mixed.” Variety and College Times are quite positive (with reservations), but THR is… well, let’s just say less positive about it. Check out some excerpts from the trio of reviews:

Variety
Darker, grimmer and more stylistically single-minded than its two relatively giddy predecessors, “Terminator Salvation” boasts the kind of singular vision that distinguished the James Cameron original, the full-throttle kinetics of “Speed” and an old-fashioned regard for human (and humanoid) heroics. Only pic’s relentlessly doomsday tone — accessorized by helmer McG’s grimy, gun-metal palette — might keep auds from flocking like lemmings to the apocalypse.
McG… exhibits an unexpected flair for the dreadful, abrupt and awesome. What we get here — which was perhaps missing on the relatively sunny mental landscapes of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” and “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” — is a sense of real horror: When humans are snatched up like Cheez-Doodles by skyscraper-sized Go-bots, there’s no slo-mo relief or stalling. Stuff happens as it might were the world actually overtaken by demonic appliances.
Christian Bale… is, once again, a movie star playing second fiddle. Heath Ledger stole “The Dark Knight” away from him and Sam Worthington (who will appear in Cameron’s “Avatar” this Christmas) heists “Terminator Salvation” from Bale…
McG’s direction is always intelligent… The script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris occasionally goes off the rails… the obligatory borrowing from the previous movies (”Come with me if you want to live,” “I’ll be back …”) tend to upset the mood created within McG’s bleached-out world, which is very deliberate and doesn’t need the comic relief.
The Hollywood Reporter
The machines rise to the occasion. Too bad the dramatic element’s just as robotic.
…while incoming director McG (the “Charlie’s Angels” movies) certainly gets a rise out of the machinery in the post-apocalyptic thriller, there’s little sign of life where the flatly executed human component is concerned.
Although director McG manages to keep the machinery humming 18 years after James Cameron’s “Judgment Day” and its liquid metal raised the F/X stakes considerably, anchoring it in any sort of satisfying dramatic context is another story.
“Rise of the Machine” scripters John Brancato & Michael Ferris fail to give Bale and Worthington much opportunity to stand out from all the monochromatic rubble…
But at the end of the day, despite the still-potent landscape provided by cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, production designer Martin Laing and visual effects supervisor Charles Gibson — the film is dedicated to the late Stan Winston, who designed the first T-800 — and that rumbling, propulsive Danny Elfman score, an inescapable truth remains: It’s just not the same without the Governator.
College Times
Does the series still fare well even with the time change and nearly complete cast makeover? What may come as a surprise to many is yes, Terminator: Salvation is still a good entry and a marked improvement over its third predecessor that may not exactly set the sci-fi genre ablaze with its effects or plot line but progresses the saga in an interesting direction with good action to boot.
Perhaps the biggest mistakes that McG’s entry makes is based more on lack of innovation and ambition. Terminator: Salvation is definitely big and spectacular as an action sci-fi movie, yet it lacks the punch and complete terror that came with the first two entries.
Terminator: Salvation has a lot of great action sequences that effectively ramp up in the amount of effects and fights seen on screen. Tensions run high when a massive robot starts to take human prisoners or through a one-on-one showdown between human versus robot. It is non-stop and gritty…
All in all, neither action nor Terminator fans should be displeased with McG’s work. Anyone expecting a genre-defining, science fiction film as explosive as the first two Terminators, though, are going in with too high of expectations.
Although these are only three of the hundreds of reviews that will eventually be published about the new Terminator, it’s still a bit on the disappointing side to see so many weaknesses pointed out. Obviously since it’s the guy who gave us the Charlie’s Angels movies who’s bringing us this film, it’s not going to be one of the all-time classics (like the first two in the series are). But from the trailers it really does look like one amazing movie.
That’s skilled trailer editors, for ya’…
I expect the movie to fall somewhere in between the level of Terminator 2 and a silly, over-the-top throwaway movie. At the very least it will be an entertaining movie, especially if you just treat it as what it essentially is – a summer blockbuster.
If you want to read the full reviews highlighted in this post, you can head over to Variety, THR and College Times.
What do you make of the mixed nature of the first reviews for Terminator Salvation? Is it what you expected from the movie?
Terminator Salvation is scheduled to open this Thursday in the US, and on June 3rd in the UK.

THR lost me when they ,”It’s just not the same without the Governator.” Believe this film will be very good and close to the level of the orginial film. Which sounds good too me.
This is pretty much what I expected from Mcg, a decent yet overall hollow action film.
Cheese-Doodles, lmoa,!!!
I’m not sure if I can really count THR’s review since they are bitching about Arnold not being in it. Other than that they are a little less than expected but still sounds like a good movie. Honestly though, how many genre defining films can be made out of one franchise? They were lucky to get one but thanks to the genius of James Cameron they were able to get two. I still think it can be the movie of the summer though.
I’ll know soon enough – I’m seeing it tonight.
Vic
Looking forward to your review, Vic. I find that you’re usually in line with my opinion in these kind of movies. I’m REALLY hoping that this isn’t Charlie’s Angels with Terminators in it. Good lord how I hated those movies with a passion.
i think like Adrian:i like the idea” it’s not just the same without the gouvernator” i will see it in 10 days in France!
Don’t hold back Vic, if it sucks we need to know!
McG this is your big test. Don’t let us down. We all know there will good and bad reviews but, at this point, I’m going in with low expectations.
Supposedly CGI Arnold IS in the film.
And please don’t call him the Governator. The guy is a disgrace and a political hack!
I respect his work in movies but I hate the guy as a responsible leader.
Looking forward to Vic’s review. All these other people (THR, Variety, College Times), who cares. Bruce, Vic, Kofi, etc…, these are the real reviewers.
very sad. I was hopping this would be great hopefully these people that reviewed this movie are quacks. I want to see vics review.
Wow Bale never gets the respect he deserves from the press. Everyone always throws his performances away like they were nothing. I mean seriously he is a terrific actor who if nothing else is consistent he always gives an awesome performance even in his less than stellar films which are not many. There are plenty of actors that you can’t say that about and yet he never gets respect really when it comes to the press and reviews.
Vic can you upload your review right away? I WANT TO READ THE IT TONIGHT!
I dont care wg=hat they say Im still seeing it!
Yeah Bro,
Vic gets ta typing tonight this film has me puzzled and could either be a jumbled mess, a loud stupid but stylized popcorn acton film like Armageddon or maybe just maybe a cool vision of the post judgement day future we have been waiting for. Hope so but I see an aweful lot of released stills of pretty mtv-ish looking co-stars trying to look tough but looking more like sexually ambiguous nightclub goers than hardened post atomic warriors
I cant wait for your review Vic, I hope this movie is awesome. Just the look and style and stills and scenes from the trailer already make this my favorite movie of the summer so far. Its really really hard for me to think that there is something in there that will ruin this movie for me.
I was really excited for Star Trek and its great reviews and I ended up not really liking it too much in the end anyway so I’m not sure I care what the reviews say, in fact I think I liked Wolverine more… But that might just be my tastes.
When it comes to Terminator I want to be scared, I want it to feel hopeless, I want it to be painful and I want to win the War… I think I’ll get that outta this movie, plus Bale is one of my favorite actors, Moon and Bryce are HOT, Worthington seems like a great actor, and the atmosphere, the look of the old school terminators to the very realistic crazy looking evil explosions, I think we have a winner in the bag here.
PS rottentomato.com can #$#&% a #$)% they almost always have the opposite reaction that I have, I think that a movie needs to be reviewed by its core audience, that’s why i love this site and say IGN or first showing, you know those reviews are fans, I don’t know who the hell these other guys are.
Arnold or no arnold i was going to see this movie anyways but to tell you the truth im more excited to see bruno or dance flick or even G.I. Joe… Yeah i said it. Yes christian bale is in this but i feel like ugh… Another terminator movie. Either way i’ll catch all flicks mentioned above.
oh noooooooooooooo!!!! whtf 90% of all the reviews ive seen have been negative. now im upset why McG i will never forgive u if this is terrible!
Did you just compare terminator to dance flick? Where’s the banhammer?
I guess worthington wasn’t as good as cameron said he would be. And no mention of bales performance? Is this where his career starts to take a turn for the worst? I hope not.
@richard
I did not compare dance flick with terminator just simply saying i’m more excited to see dance flick. So your saying that i should get banned because i’m not as excited as you are about this terminator flick…? Really? I mean you do know that not everybody is going to like this movie regardless of reviews. Don’t get me wrong i liked all terminator movies and i’m sure i’ll like this one but i’m just not excited about it. If anything i’m more excited about the terminator salvation game that comes out tommorrow with co-op play!!!
Hey is that Terminator game coming out for xbox?
While I haven’t formed a full opinion on Salvation yet (A lot of pros and cons), I will agree with THR, I find Schwarzenegger to be a much more interesting action star than Christian Bale, Bale is a superb character actor, but Arnie has a magic charisma that can’t be replecated, his Sean Conneryesque self awareness, timing and delivery has made for classic quotes out of horrible dialogue. Whereas Bale’s best work is from working with the likes of James Mangold and Werner Herzog. I’m calling it now, this year, Christian Bale will receive far more praise for his work in Public Enemies than he will as John Connor.
@790
The game will be on the 360, ps3 and the pc… The trailers for the co-op gameplay look really good.
Dont hold back Vic,
If its great we need to know!
Richard you actually like IGN? I have no respect for that site they have the worst reviews i’ve ever seen. They actually Said Dragon ball was a good movie.
dudelove YOu would rather see Arnold than bale? Sorry Arnold is a horrible actor and Bale actually has talent. Despite his size I never could buy Arnold as an action hero because I was so busy laughing at the guy trying to actually act. Bale is one of the most intense actors I’ve ever seen.
Thanks Jago, do you know if the game is a first person shooter, or 3rd?
I’ll deffinitly check it out as I’m buying “Fanboys!”
@790
i believe its a 3rd person shooter… mainly cause of all the things you do in the game… jumping on to certain machines i think thats what i saw… either way it looked good.
This is one of those film franchises where I feel Arnold has very little to do with its success. Let’s face it probably any mean looking big bodybuilder type with a deep voice could’ve pulled off his role. There was no acting involved at all.
Arnold was lucky to have landed the terminator role.
It’d be nice to have his face on a terminator even in a cameo to maintain continuity but it’s not necessary.
