First Official Pics From Narnia’s ‘Dawn Treader’

Back in August, we gave you a first glimpse at the ship from the upcoming third Chronicles of Narnia installment, subtitled The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. They weren’t official pics, but rather some taken by the father of one of the bloggers at the Cleveland Point, in Australia, where the Dawn Treader (the ship that’s the focus of the third film) was being constructed.

However, the first official pics from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader appeared online recently and we have them here for your viewing pleasure. They surfaced on the film’s official Facebook page: one of them features the ship’s steering wheel (shown above), while the other two show the characters of King Caspian (played by Ben Barnes), Edmund (played by Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (played by Georgie Henley).

It’s amazing how good the crew can make things look once they’re actually part of the film or professionally “done up,” as opposed to just the ship itself as we saw from the mid-construction photos taken a few months back. I only ever saw the first Narnia film, subtitled the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – it was moderately enjoyable but nothing more IMO, certainly not enough to make me shell out money for the sequel, Prince Caspian. Although I’ll maybe rent it on DVD soon just so I’m up to speed on the story before Dawn Treader comes out. It’s too early to tell whether this one will be good or bad, but these pics look pretty neat to me.

In case you don’t know, or just as a reminder, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the fifth book (chronologically speaking) in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series. It takes place about three years after the events of Prince Caspian (the fourth book) when Edmund, Lucy and their cousin, Eustace, are once again pulled into Narnia, this time landing aboard Caspian’s sea vessel, the titular Dawn Treader. Caspian, now king of Narnia, is honoring his oath to find the seven lost lords of Narnia at the edge of the world, so Edmund, Lucy and Eustace tag along for the voyage.

    They look interesting. I didn't read the sequels growing up so the story is all new to me. I enjoyed the first two movies. It sounds like a majority of this one will be on the boat so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

    You know, the first movie is one of the few good movies based off a book. It stuck to the book pretty much word for word, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Prince Caspian was pretty good, although I didn't read that book. I may have to catch up on the story, but I think so far, they've done a VERY good adaptation to the books. The third I imagine will be a good movie as well.

    I've been saying that A Horse and His Boy is my favorite, since it zooms in on a kid whose troubles eventually corner him up to the truth--which is somewhat my own story.

    But Voyage of the Dawn Treader has moments for everyone. The themes may boil down to one about humility, and one about pride. Voyage follows what I see as the most boring and intellectual tale (Caspian). This is the most colorful and fast-paced story, It has magic, humor, fear, loneliness, determination, resignation, and hope. The adversaries are underwater, invisible, ironic, and sympathetic!

    I'm eager to see how it translates, and doubt they will have to "add" to it to make it audience-worthy--something they absolutely had to do with the politic-and-strategy laden Prince Caspian.

    The source material is excellent, but the episodic adventures will have to be linked together better for the film version. The pics look great; bright and colourful, with that crucial blend of "epic" and "wholesome" Narnia stories absolutely need.

    I admit I was a little disappointed with Prince Caspian's focus on the war-fighting aspect of the story -- yes, war is one of the main themes of the book, but the "fanciful-vs-"real"" dichotomy was neglected in the film, sadly. Dawn Treader has a new director, though, and I choose to be optimistic.

    Prince Caspian is ten times a better movie than the first Narnia movie. I know the whole team is practically the same for the movies but I absolutely loved it.

    I'm not fans fo the series, persay, I couldn't get through the books, I stopped half way through A Horse And His Boy, and never picked up a Narnia boook again. The only reason I'm interested in these films is to see if the next one is as good as the last.

    I'm way excited. I loved the Narnia series growing up, and I think the movies are pretty decent....although, I think Prince Caspian was actually a better movie than The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Prince Caspian captured the magic of the message a lot more than the first movie did, which was about faith and having to rely on God at the end of the day to get things done, whereas in the first movie, I felt like it lost its message and became more of a fantasy-action movie toward the end....with the kids doing ridiculous Power Ranger moves in the last battle....

    They went too far off the books for me in Caspian. I hope they stay closer in this one. I want to see them meet a star and eustace turn into a dragon and all the craziness on the islands they find!

    I thought LWW was great (even though my expectations were sky high). Prince Caspian was, in some ways, even better. The special effects were amazing. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a brilliant book and I can't wait to see the ship, the dragon, the sea-serpent and the 'Dufflepuds' on screen. I'm so excited! I just hope this one is advertised better - so many people I know didn't know Caspian was being released at the time.
  • I'm reading the book right now. I think the films are better than the novels because they are so short. Film makers had to add extra scenes to make it a proper film. The series only gets better and more interesting as it progresses.
    The second film was WAY better than the first.
    Can't wait for this film to be released.
