Finally! A first peek at the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11.
Here are my thoughts based on the photo above, which is from the Star Trek trailer:

- I know we can’t see the entire thing, but it looks like they’ve applied the same mosaic skin texture to the ship that was in the early Star Trek movie versions of the refitted Enterprise.
- While we’re seeing them with perspective in the shot above, it looks like the nacelles are cylindrical in shape, just as they were in the original design.
- The nacelles have the same warp coil intercooler intakes angled inwards at 45 degrees that the original ship had. (Yes, I am a full-on Trek geek.)
- It looks like they’re staying with the same outline and dimensions, at least on the saucer section of the hull.
Overall it looks to me like they took the details from the redesign that was done for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and applied them to the original NCC-1701.
Based on what I see above, my Trek fan freakout factor meter is registering very low. It looks like they are indeed trying to be faithful to the original and appease the existing fanbase.
What do you think?

Thanks for finding this, Vic. Yes, the exterior design seems to be similar to the Constitution Class refitted in the first movie. But what of the interior? I believe that’s where much of the “reimaging” that Abrams was talking about is.
The first trailer comes out Friday? Didn’t know that and I will be looking for it.
The trailer is supposed to be attached to “Cloverfield.” So now you have TWO reasons to go see it.
Vic
Looks good but I have a concern: I see smoke and no stars which lead me to believe that the earlier script rumor that it was to be built in Area 51 might be true. HOW LAME IS THAT!!!
Starships weren’t designed to operate in atmosphere until Voyager, so how does it get off the ground?
If I may say…
WOW!!!!!!
I simply cannot wait to see this movie… if it means just seeing the starships in action, I’ll be happy… I miss the old starship Enterprise…
One thing though…
My favorite uniforms have ALWAYS been the ones from the original movies… the Red uniforms… I’m a big fan of those..
I’d pee in my pants if they used them again…
Uh Jeff?
Area 51?????????????????
Come again? What is this silly thing?
Ok, I agree with the whole concept of Starships NOT being able to operate at all in our atmosphere.
BUT, that’s not the only silly thing…
Of ALL the things Earth has gone through since Zefrem or whatever his name was, first built that spaceship… HOW, is it even possible that Area 51 would still exist? Makes no sense… AT ALL!
Area 51 was long gone by the time we made the first warp drive.
I just hope that it’s actually being built somewhere else or in a huge alien ship or something… Area 51 would simply be dumb!
IMHO,the warp engines construct look almost identical to the orginial NCC-1701 and the disc resembles the first motion picture version(like you guys said). Pretty cool seeing the welders on the disc.
One question to all the hardcore Trek Fans…
Which Starship was the very first and where was it built?
I don’t know that’s why I am asking…
Yes I had the Omnipedia Star Trek once, but it’s so dated now…
OMFG!!!! THAT IS AMAZING LOOKING!! I cannot wait to see this!! Veeeeeeeeeeery impressive!
Maybe I’m so excited about this cuz I’m not that well versed in the Trek mythos, but I think this film will be very AWESOME.
Hopefully Abrams has shaped up since his Superman script days (I haven’t really liked much of what he’s done thus far) and we’ll have a descent film after all!
Far as I recall the 1701 Enterprise was the second constitytion class ship built and was constructed at the San Fransisco Shipyards in orbit.
^
I also agree that the Area51 rumor better stay a rumor. Area 51 is a blackbudget base. And Blackbudgets were no more in the Roddenberry Trek.
^
If they (Abhrams) don’t get that, then I see some real bad choices being made here.
^
The Nacelles look oversized in this picture. I’m hoping that’s the perspective and not real.
^
Have to wait and see more before I totally like it.
Another Trek geek caught in a pon-farr moment
here -
From The Making of Star Trek by Stephen E. Whitfield and Gene Roddenberry, page 171, regarding the construction of the Enterprise(NCC-1701) :
“The unit components were built at the Star Fleet Division of what is still called the San Francisco Navy Yards, and the vessel was assembled in space. The Enterprise is not designed to enter the atmosphere of a planet and never lands of a planet surface.”
Further to that the dedication plaque on the bridge reads – the San Francisco Ship Yards as well.
What’s throwing people off is that the refits shown in the movies all being done in Spacedock.
Very pleased so far with the direction of the new movie.
From the way they’ve gone with design, I honestly think that they won’t make the interior much different.
The ONLY thing I see them changing much is the computers. If they do anything else it will end up being an “ST:Enterprise”(more technological looking than TOS) and we all know fans would be pissed if that happened.
Am I the only one missing the old uniforms and ships from the old Trek movies?
Yes I was born in 77 how did you know??
I don’t know.
If they made these changes to the outer hull I’m betting the inside has major advancements, thell prob leave the Command chair in the middle but I expect everything else will be upgraded.
^
It’s already been confirmed that while the exterior mods will be minor expect the interior to look very different. General designs may hold true but that’s about it.
No Stephen I’m a fan of the old look. IMO they should use the same uniform look that was in TOS but advance it like it looked in Enterprise’s “in a Mirror Darkly”.
That would be perfect.
^
I never liked the Movie uniforms. Those red puffy lame looking outfits. Too British looking.
I’m a dork… but I love those old puffy uniforms… however, speaking with one of the cast members, I was told that they were VERY uncomfortable…
So if this has ANY action in this movie… I bet, they’ll be wearing something very different.
Say Steve, do you have a photo of that uniform in a mirror darkly?
I’d love to see it
Naw your not a Dork Stephen just have a different opinion.
I allways felt they went with those puffy redcoats for one reason, Shanter and other memebers of the crew were all out of shape.
I’m mean look it, the orginal uniforms with the Red or Blue tops were pretty skin tight. Back then even shat had to wear a gurdle to hold back that spare tire from falling out.
The puffy redcoats also had *SHOULDERPADS !!* how friggen acomodating…
^
Naw I say give us the orignal red, blue and yellow tops in this film. Since that’s what I and most Trek fans want I’m sure it will look totally different with maybe a little patch somewhere that is red or blue, etc. And the Enterprise logo will be oversized like the Nacelles and will prob also be the communicator.
^
Sorry Stephen my Tricorder dosnt have any images of those “Enterprise In a Mirror Darkly” outfits. They were basically the same uniformn Kirk and Spock wore with updated fabric. They really looked good especally the mini-skirts.
Check Star Trek Enterprise Season 4 dvd’s or you could prob google it and see them as well or youtube?
Well Steve…
From what I’ve seen the Uniforms ARE like the old ones… Blue and Yellow!
BUT, the material somehow looks very much like Spiderman’s outfit… Some strange fabric, I don’t know what it is…
Other than that, I’ve only seen a moc up of it… not an actual uniform worn by a cast member as they were not signed back then. But then, who knows… Oh by the way if they go with the Vulcan dress / robe for Zack (Spock) it will look pretty awesome.
Granted in the shop it looks like any other sci fi costume but then when they put the lighting on and then the film has it’s filters put in place… it looks so good. I saw tests shots, cause I more or less didn’t show any excitement over that design. But then the screen test was pretty cool. I had no idea they make costumes based on what kind of lighting they would use. It seems that they test the fabrics to see if it matches the film and lighting in certain scenes.
Don’t worry, unless the uniforms will be changes… we’ll have different things to worry about…
Though I hope they won’t go with the belt, cause that actually made it look too much like a superhero outfit…
Wow if they have belts that’s gonna look real dumb.
^
I would be shocked to see Spock in a robe, seems like the early days of TOS Spock was really trying to fit in with Federation standards and a robe was more of a Vulcan thing.
Maybe as a young boy he’ll be in one?^
^
Yeah that remark about the fabric looking like Spiderman texture makes sense if you see the original teaser poster it had the same look as well.
^
That would be fine with me if they used that fabric but kept the original look. (Color tops black bell pants).
Well Saad,
That’s not quite true… While they may not make it big in the US for some blockbuster reasons or weak stories sometimes, they do in fact linger on well past the US boarders and make it quite well elsewhere.
So, when you count in the money from around the world… trust me it does much better than most movies you think does better…
Star Trek has a name, and like Bond, it too has it’s fan base and they’ll watch it…
And guess what…
Then the commercials start hitting the airways on this Trek movie… You’ll watch it too…
Because you’ll hear people say, “for a sci fi it’s not that bad” and eventually you’ll give it a shot, cause one of the cast members happens to be quite a looker… so you’ll say.. what the heck… I’ll watch it…
Yea Stephen its amazing how much detail goes into films with lighting and all.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Boy those nacelles look bigger everytime I look at them.
^
I hope they don’t turn the Enterprise into a Monster truck deal.
Saad, I think the films are all entertaining to some degree. They all make money “dvds especally”.
^
Why did they cancel Enterprise when it was getting good, IMO, THEIR OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE FANS.
^
Why make a Star Trek reboot?
IMO, THEIR OUT OF TOUCH WITH STAR TREK.
Without Rick Berman the fate of Trek is in the hands of Les Moonves (a real piece of work) CBS suits, JJ Abhrams and the fine folks that brought you Transformers.
^
Also your comment about nobody cares about Trek is more than likey correct. With the exception of us and other fan sites the Franchise is pretty dead except for the book novels…
^
This entire concept could really succeed or really fail badly.
One thing Abrams did right was cast Quinto and it was pure luck that he was even in Heroes that was also pure luck that it caught on,,, lots of fingers crossed at CBS I bet …
^
I can’t wait to hear more outrage from Fans that don’t post on websites and have no idea what awaits them….
Well, just going by what I’m seeing here, it looks like it’s possible they may just be updating the exterior after all. Now, though, I’m wondering about whether they’ll try to maintain any semblance of continuity with “The Cage.”
If so, then I wonder if this is a refit/maintenance cycle we’re seeing Enterprise undergoing before they hand command over to Kirk, kind of like we saw in the first movie. If so, that could also explain any interior differences in such a way that older fans might not have any objections to.
As for the uniforms, I’ll have to look for pics of those. It would be interesting to see whether they’re going to use the uniform style from the original series, or the one from the original series pilot episodes, which would actually fit in better with the time frame of Kirk first taking command.
Anyway, from a visual standpoint, this limited evidence says it may not bee quite so bad. Unfortunately, that doesn’t ease my concerns regarding the script. Whether this will be better than Transformers remains to be seen.
I have a feeling the spacedock stuff is all for the trailer. I also think were going to see some pre-Constitution type Federation ships.
^
I would really be surprised if Abhrams used the uniforms from “the Cage” not that it would suck but it would surprise me if he follows cannon that well.
^
If that’s the “cage” are we going to see Spock bark out his commands like he did way back then?
Lol
Flamestrike, did Transformers suck bacon or what?
^
When they told that cia guy to take off his clothes and he’s wearing a cia t-shirt , I think that was the most horribly written horribly cast scene I’ve seen in years..
^
Yeah Abrams track record is horrible.
I think he made up for it (a little)with Cloverfield but transformers was a deceptiCon!!!
There’s better versions of Transformers walking the streets of Hollywood. And Decepticons as well.
A true fan will give this movie a chance. Period! Some of you guys sound like a bunch of women at a hair salon.
Haha. Trek Freak if that’s your real name…
^
I got nothing….
^
Ps.
You think its bad here, gheeshh
I have always been and will continue to be cautiously optimistic about this film until something comes up to slant my opinion otherwise.
Vic (A *46* year old Trek fan)
Well now Saad I just totally disagree with ya.
^
I only went to Transformers (before I did the research) to see the Cloverfield trailer. Duh.
Uhhhh..
Am I the only one who loved Transformers?
Why did I love Transformers?
Uh come one!! IT’S GIANT ROBOTS!! AND I WAS A KID AGAIN!!!
Yeah I was a big fan of Transformers as a kid…
It simply made me happy to see it again and they did a good enough job to give me a sense of nostalgia…
That’s all it was for me…
And I want more…
