TrekMovie got the scoop that we will finally be seeing a full trailer for the new Star Trek movie next month. This will not be a teaser but will include both exterior and interior shots of the USS Enterprise as well as scenes of crewmembers speaking dialog from the film.
In addition Paramount will also start lifting the veil of secrecy that’s been surrounding the production.

There’s no word on which November release the trailer will be attached to – the only two Paramount films coming out are Madagascar 2 and The Soloist. Neither of those seem a fit for the premiere of what Paramount hopes to be a big blockbuster for next Summer. TrekMovie points out that other big and semi-big movies opening next month include Quantum of Solace, Disney’s Bolt, Australia and Twilight.
None of those are Paramount films but it wouldn’t be the first time that a trailer for one studio’s movie appears attached to a release of a competing studio’s film.
There are two ways to look at which November film the trailer might be attached to:
1. Attach a trailer for a highly anticipated movie to a film that isn’t expected to open very big in order to boost ticket sales via people who are nudged by the possibility of seeing the trailer.
2. Attach a trailer for an upcoming movie the studio wants to build a buzz about to a film that is going to open big at the box office so more people will see it.
While this Star Trek “re-envisioning” does have the popularity of J.J. Abrams’ name behind it due to his work on Lost and more recently, Fringe – I think that Paramount will have an uphill battle re-packaging the movie and convincing non-Trek-fans that it’s worth seeing. So… I think they’ll attach it to a big box office hit like Quantum of Solace or Twilight.
That’s not to say that the new Star Trek movie won’t be very good or even a huge hit – I just think it’s going to take some great marketing to convince people that it’s not just for Trek geeks (like me).

Star Trek opens on May 8, 2009.

I would put it with Twilight.
Its going to be HUGE!
I suppose they might consider Bond a safer bet .
But, if you put it with Twilight
You might attract more Non Trek fans that way.
I think Twilight would be a good bet. They’re trying to bring a brand new audience to the franchise and they’re definitely skewing it young, so it would be a good match.
Oh man… does this mean I might have to go see Twilight???
Vic
I think it must be Quantum of Solace. That’s the biggest movie of the fall season without question.
Although self-promoting Twilight with this is possible, quantum of Solace’s opening weekend will be 3 times as much – I think that’s the exact target audience for Trek too.
Thinking about it now, I think I can say I’m sure it’s with Bond, it doesn’t make sense to throw the first and only real trailer of the year at Twilight of all things
I’m with Rob on this one. You’ll have a much easier time attracting the Bond audience with Star Trek than you will the Twilight audience. Besides, the Star Trek film franchise and the Bond film franchise are perhaps two of the most prolific in Hollywood, it only seems fair to mix the marketing a bit. Especially if Madagascar 2 is the alternative .
I also agree with Rob. It’s gotta be Bond. My guess is that MOST Trek fans have no interest in a emo vampire flick and the fact that more people will be seeing Bond. I for sure wouldn’t waste $10 on a ticket for Twilight just to see a trailer…especially one that I will be seeing later right here on ScreenRant!
Its a mistake to just go after Trek fans,
thats why i Prefer Twilight.
You guys are underestimating Twilight.
Gary, if you were in marketing, would you would for example, put your huge opening trailer for the re-kindling of one of the biggest film franchises ever (Trek) with a tween’s romance film that for example will have 1.5-2.5 million viewers in its opening weekend compared to a film that will have 5 or more million?
Everyone who watches movies will see Bond – much less than that are interested in Twilight. If it’s to be with one of the November films, how can they not put it with the movie that will be the most successful?
Which audience is closer to who will see Trek? Bond Audience = New Trek Audience.
I would be shocked if it’s not Bond.
Rob,
I also think you’re underestimating Twilight. It has a HUGE fanbase and will no doubt open very big.
Vic
It would be intersting to see how Many Trek trailers have been attached to Bond Films and how or if that helped attract new Trek fans.
I dont know if that information exists,
but if it did I would sure like to see it.
Rob, how much does 1-2.5 viewers translate to in terms of Box Office numbers?
I’ll go watch this NEW Trek movie in the theatre
I may be underestimating. But the point I’m making is comparing it to Bond. Do you guys estimate higher numbers for Twilight over Bond?
And Gary, I don’t understand what you mean. Again I’m saying Bond will have higher…and why wouldn’t promotion be geared to higher numbers?
For fun we should put our guesses/bets. It’ll be interesting to see what path they choose
I bet (lots) that it’s with Quantum of Solace – I think Joseph and Andy do too. Vic and Gary, do you guys bet Twilight then?
I would put my money that it comes out with Bong, but if it came out with Twilight that wouldn’t be bad ether…
This Star Trek traier is very important as far as first impressions go…
Let’s hope JJ Apeman can pull it off.
Opps I meant Bond, not Bong?
And Trailer was also misspelled…
I’m just gonna put this down, now.
Rob,
my point was that it would be a better idea to put it with Twilight for the sake of a new audience for Trek fans.
as to box office, I dont know.
but be at as big as Bond.
Twilights reaction at Comic Con proves that its a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off .
what I was asking was how much you expect it to make in opening weekend ?
By the way if Paramount chooses to reeasing with one of its november films
my guess would be Madagascar 2 .
Family audience and all that.
@Rob
I’m not going to try to pinpoint box office numbers for Twilight, even experts at that sort of thing don’t know how it’s going to do. I do have a feeling it won’t have a problem hitting at list the high 30s on opening weekend.
As far as Bond, it’ll probably do low 40s I think. Generally sequels to well received previous films tend to make similar box office to the first film on opening weekend.
I agree with Gary’s logic – I’m thinking Paramount wants to bring a new, young generation into the fold with this Trek movie.
Vic
But wouldn’t the audience for Twilight mainly be young teenaged girls? I don’t know anything about Twilight, so correct me if I’m wrong, but that is the type of movie I see it as…
Nope Ken J, your pretty much dead on…
regardless of the age of the audience,
If its a MASSIVE audiience
Should Paramount IGNORE it?
I predicted Paramount would put the new trek trailer with Twilight because i am taking the studio at its word .
they say they want to build a new audience for Trek.
The best way to do that is to try to attract people who HAVE NOT SEEN IT .
Most Goth kids that I’ve delt with think Star Trek is crap, so putting it with Twilight’s not really gonna pay off if you ask 790.
I really dont get this reaction about the Twilight Audience .
Well, I guess the opening box office
for Twilight is going to surprise a lot of people here .
Hey Gary I’m curious, what’s your prediction on Twilights Opening weekend?
I will follow Vics example and stay away from that 790,
but I would be VERY interested in tracking the presales for this one as we get closer to the release date.
Hey Gang, just read over on TrekMovie that it will be attached to…… Quantum of Solace!
As if I didn’t already have enough reason to go see the next Bond flick.
Vic
Yeah I fully expect “007, Quantum” to be the last great blockbuster of 2008.
I’m sure it will be in the upper 250 mil range easy.
The Star Trek trailer is gonna bring out every trek freak, and really boost its opening weekend…
Twilight will have to pull its own weight… (Drink lots of blood).
Quantum is the last movie I’m really looking forward to this year.
Nothing after that of interest for me, really. Punisher will be more of a curiosity thing. And is the Keanu suckfest this December or next? I forget…
Vic
Yeah Vic, I like Keanu (790,dives for cover), but I have no desire to see the remake of The Day the Earth Stood for GreenPeace ,, umm I mean Still…
Gary wrote:

Well, what Paramount and any other movie studio WON’T ignore is of the demographics of an audience. Children’s movies often draw large numbers, does that mean every movie studio should plug their big blockbuster film before them? I’m pretty sure the Twilight audience will not exactly be a target audience for a Star Trek movie… I’m not talking numbers, I’ve been told many times that it will open big, it’s the demographics of the people who will be watching it that would make me doubt out of all the movies for the trailer to first appear, it would be before that film. And I guess the news that it will be before 007 just confirms that.
I stand by my logic .
they wont expand the Trek movie fan base by attacting it to Bond.
You dont gain anything by not taking risks.
