“Because we can’t resist.”

According to /Film, that’s the blunt reason given by Warner Bros. head Alan Horn at ShoWest this week on the decision to greenlight a fifth installment of the Final Destination franchise, . And I guess we can’t argue with such straightforwardness. If they want to do it, let ‘em do it. Don’t worry about what the moviegoers want – though I guess maybe audiences can always go for more course-correction killings, if the box office success of The Final Destination is any indication.

Personally, I’ll always be a FD franchise apologist and defender. Nothing will make me contemplate and worry about the possibility of dying in some sort of accident, large or small, more than the first movie. And though I feel terrible for participating in death fetishization, I’ve never seen more clever kills than those in Final Destination 2. Also, that opening traffic pile-up stunt is so well executed it more than makes up for the film’s terrible climax.

The third movie … well, I tend to ignore it. I have little appreciation for it. As for the fourth film, the 3D was pretty poor and it’s a shame the trailer gave away all the kills, but it had some interesting ideas. Using auto racing as a reflexive commentary on audience desire to see violence up close and then turning the violence back on that audience was very appropriate and poignant. Same with the idea to blow up a theater screen showing a 3D movie. The gag of having a 3D movie audience being bombarded with real material, like a car bursting through the screen, is a very old concept, but it was very fitting to the overall context of these movies.

We can assume Final Destination 5 will also be in 3D, though the meta reflexiveness will likely be absent. Which is fine by me, as now I’d rather just see some more creative kills – especially the kind with a Rube Goldberg type of chain reaction.

However, for some new territory to be explored, let me suggest the opening disaster be more natural this time. Maybe an earthquake, a tsunami, a hurricane, or something similar that people continue to fear, especially in recent times. Or, if they really want to be bold, what if FD5 involved an act of terrorism? One of the best things about the first film is the detectives investigating the deaths as if the main character was the culprit. Bring that angle back, please.

What direction would you like to see the next Final Destination go in? Do you think my last idea is too controversial for such a cheap-thrill franchise?

No word from Horn on when Final Destination 5 will shoot or open in theaters, but we’ll keep you updated on any information regarding this sequel as we hear it.

  1. first movie was awesome , second was good , third was average , fourth was just bad and I seriously won't watch the 5th one even if they gave me free tickets .

  2. Great! I love the franchise (I loved 3 also) but I knew “The Final Destination” wasn't going to be the last – no matter what the title suggested.

  3. when will it stop?

  4. “What direction would you like to see the next Final Destination go in?” Here goes:

Have the REAL makers of the movie killed in various, gruesome ways with their own equipment while they're making part 5. Talk about killing 2 birds with one stone! (pun intended)

  5. I'll end up seeing it just to see what they do, but I agree that the angle from the first film should make a comeback. The main character as the suspect is what really made the first one interesting. The sequels have all been about escaping death or outwitting it, which is fine, but it is getting old.

  6. Jesssayin, my thoughts exactly

  7. Some one has to give saw a run for title of most drawn out and unnecessary franchise after the 2nd sequel

  8. It'll never stop as long as the series is making money. Even if the studio said the previous film was the last. I wish they would quit already, these films are all pretty much the same movie. If you've seen the first, you've seen them all.

  10. i think that they should include a boat, and maybe a giant sea creature attacking it, or just a tsunami or something. i completely agree. a natural disaster would do good, not so much transportation this time. eg. plane, trucks, rollercoaster, race cars. maybe this time a boat wouldnt be too bad but still should be maybe a tsunami or terrorism etc. i think they should have a lot more people who stay behind this time so theres more deaths to look forward to,and deaths including every day fears such as spiders, snakes etc

  11. final destination should stick to a simple small accident… bcoz disaster is too big for it…i suggest knowing 2 for disaster… bcoz knowing is look the same as the final destination, they died in order and they die in numbers!!!!!

  12. it should be on a boat.

  13. i think they should have it set on a cruise ship and somehow get Aj Cooke and Michael LAndes back on the 5th one, since they survived the 2nd one! makes sense to me. i think thye are all good. i mean the more gore the marrier

  14. I think final destination 5 would be a heck of a lot better in 3D it was good not in 3D but better in it so please make one that’s in 3D

  15. I hope the big accident will be on a Cruise Ship or Train or Something.
They say it will be a bridge accident, I cant even picture it in my head.
How will he/she warn them to get out or something ?
All I know is the movie will be awesome and its gonna be in 3D.

  16. its supposed to be on a bridge but it would be better if a few kids were on a trip to england and the premonition is about the london eye. that would be awesome

  17. From what I read, the opening scene will take place on a suspension bridge, which will probably mean the cables will snap and the bridge will collapse, or there will be some freaky accident with cars hurdling over the edge or some combination of the two…I think a cruise ship disaster opening scene would be more interesting. If you want to go the “natural disaster” route, how about a hurricane or tornado? Think that may be something.

  18. the fifth one should be where like these tenns like visit nasa and the rocket collapses or explodes or something like that…idk hope it helps(:

  19. Why do I love these films so much?

No matter how badly acted they are and how repetitive they are. (2 is the only way that is SLIGHTLY different) I just can’t get enough.

The final scene of 4 is brilliant – showing the deaths as X-rays looks great.

My thoughts on 5? I’d like to see a building collapse.

      • this series of final distination is wonderful it is like a really story of our lives the deth looking for us evry day i like it so much and iam found a really events in this series thank you :-)
