The Super Bowl is known for being one of the most-watched sporting events of the year. For those that don’t particularly enjoy football – or those who also enjoy movies and ads – Super Bowl Sunday also features plenty of specially created commercials and new movie trailers for the big releases of the year.
Two of those high-profile releases will hit theaters this month: Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and Fifty Shades of Grey, the adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. E.L. James’ erotica novel-turned-Valentine’s Day release has become infamous for its R-rated content, though the new trailer is a safe PG-13.
The Fifty Shades of Grey Super Super Bowl trailer largely relies on the franchise’s popularity to sell itself. It includes a rundown of how many copies James’ book sold (over 100 million), the number of views the first trailer received (over 250 million), and the estimated number of “fantasies provoked” (“countless”).
For those that managed to miss the previous trailers and TV spots, Fifty Shades of Grey stars Dakota Johnson as college senior Anastasia Steele, who is swept up in a relationship with reclusive billionaire Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan. Soon, Anastasia learns all about Christians hobbies, including helicopters, gliding… and what resides in his “playroom.”
The Super Bowl trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey doesn’t provide too much new footage that hasn’t been seen in previously-released trailers. However, the new scene – in which Christian leads Anastasia to his playroom and she asks, “Like, your Xbox and stuff?” – does show that Fifty Shades of Grey is capable of poking fun at itself.
Whether this small hint at a sense of humor will prove to be more of a throughline in the whole movie remains to be seen. Otherwise, the Fifty Shades of Grey Super Bowl trailer just uses its popularity, as well as the audience’s fear of missing out, to sell the film to all those who are not already planning on seeing it this Valentine’s Day.
Fifty Shades of Grey premieres February 13th, 2015.
