Kevin Feige says it's more than possible that the MCU will one day introduce a female Thor. Over the years, the God of Thunder has gone through a number of iterations in the comics. Likewise, his on-screen persona has gone through changes as well. The biggest alteration in the comics, however, was Thor becoming unworthy of Mjolnir and wandering the Marvel Universe as simply the Odinson. In his stead, Jane Foster picked up the hammer and has been spending the past few years as the Mighty Thor.

We don't know if such a dramatic change is heading to the MCU, but there are certainly signs. When Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters, it will see Hela destroy Mjolnir and the God of Thunder get a whole new look. The film is already being hailed as one of Marvel's best, but could it set up a new status quo in Asgard mirroring the comics?

Fandango recently spoke with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the possibility of the Jane Foster version of Thor appearing in the MCU, and he certainly didn't rule anything out.

Jane Foster as the female Thor

"We always look back to the comics to get those ideas ... sometimes very specific storylines like "Civil War," sometimes just nuggets or characters like "Planet Hulk. So anything that's happened in the comics, even a female Thor, become great potentials and the ideas from which future movies can be born."

As Feige says, elements from both Civil War and Planet Hulk in the comics have made their way into films. Thor: Ragnarok will borrow from the latter tale, along with some other classic Thor stories. With that in mind, it's not hard to believe the rise of Unworthy Thor also occurring in the film.

Thor: Ragnarok star Karl Urban was recently asked about the idea of a female Thor, and he was firmly behind the idea. Meanwhile, fans of the Jane Foster Thor have been hoping to see the character appear in the film ever since she was introduced. The one logistical problem is that Foster seems to have been sidelined in the MCU. Still, with a star like Natalie Portman in the role, something could surely be worked out. If nothing else, things could be changed so that someone like Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie picks up the hammer. Of course, Mjolnir will need to be re-forged first.

Adding to the theory of Thor going full Odinson in the near future, Chris Hemsworth recently teased his character will gain the mythical axe Jarnbjorn in Avengers: Infinity War. In the comic, this is the weapon Thor begins wielding once he loses Mjolnir. With some many stars aligning, could Phase 4 usher in a female Thor? If nothing else, the possibility is strong that Thor: Ragnarok may be the last time the God of Thunder lift Mjolnir.
