If ‘The Expendables’ Were Women

The Expendables All Female Cast Group PictureThe Expendables hit theaters in 2010 in a screen-rattling, action-packed, explosive extravaganza. While The Expendables failed to impress some casual movie audiences and action fans, many thought it was just what the action-doctor ordered. The movie got us thinking... sometimes we tend to forget that there have been a long line of major butt-kicking ladies who not only get the job done, but do it looking sexy as hell. Jane Fonda in Barbarella, Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 1 & 2, Rhona Mitra in Doomsday and Underworld 3 - all these women knew how to whoop some major rear while still being completely feminine. We at Screen Rant thought: “Who would we pick to be on our all female 'Expendables' team?” and let me tell you, I think we came up with a fantastic list. There may not be some of the newer action lady stars like Rosario Dawson (Death Proof), Zoe Bell (Whip It!), Emilie Ullerup (Sanctuary), Summer Glau (Firefly) or Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse) - but only because we wanted to find appropriate (age, popularity, etc.) counterparts to the male actors in The Expendables.

Sigourney Weaver / Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone in The ExpendablesWhen picking a leader for our all-female team there wasn’t any choice other than the woman that epitomized female bad-assery in the 70s, 80, and 90s: The Alien-fighting Ellen Ripley. Even though she’s done all sorts of genres and a slew of other films (including most recently Avatar), Weaver remains the top choice to command an estrogen-heavy commando team.

Milla Jovovich / Jason Statham

Jason Statham in The ExpendablesTo call Milla Jovovich an up-and-coming female action star would be a gross misrepresentation of her career. Starting with The Fifth Element and moving on to the highly successful Resident Evil franchise, Jovovich has proven herself to be a solid and entertaining butt-kicking actress for quite a long time. Nobody I know would question her ability to be Weaver’s right-hand woman. I could easily see her and Weaver being long time friends in a movie.

Michelle Yeoh / Jet Li

Jet Li in The ExpendablesWhen looking to replace one of the top martial arts males in the film industry, we didn’t have to look any further than the beautiful Michelle Yeoh. Like Li, Yeoh’s martial arts film experience started back in the 80s with the Hong Kong action films Supercop and Police Story 3 and quickly moved on to be the go-to lady for female martial arts roles. She became an American favorite in the epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and once again proved her acting/action prowess in Tomorrow Never Dies and The Mummy 3. Interesting side note, Yeoh was the lady training with the cobra in the recent Karate Kid remake.

Cynthia Rothrock / Dolph Lundgren

If you’re talking about 80s female action stars then you absolutely have to include the beautiful Cynthia Rothrock. 80s action film fans will remember her most from the films Jungle Heat, Rapid Fire, Martial Law and her best known role Lady Dragon. In real life, Rothrock is a true badass and holds six black belts in multiple forms of various martial arts. Just like Lundgren, Rothrock continued to make movies after her heyday but she just never got the attention she deserved due to the changing tastes of fickle movie-going audiences. Still, it would be quite a sight to see her fight Michelle Yeoh in a modern setting.

Vivica A. Fox / Terry Crews

Terry Crews in The ExpendablesOriginally I had picked Zoe Saldana (The Losers) for this role but she’s just way too young to properly replace Crews. Instead, I turned to the “Copperhead” from Kill Bill Vol. 1: Vivica Fox, and then my choice was settled.  Fox has the same ability as Crews to be both a badass and a comedian at the same time. It’s true that she hasn’t been known for her over-the-top action-heavy films but that doesn’t take away from the fact that she is beautiful, sexy and potentially deadly.

Lucy Lawless / Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke in The ExpendablesThis decision is really self-explanatory but I’m going to talk about it anyway. There are only a handful of female action characters that people know by name and probably the most well known is Xena: Warrior Princess. Lawless quickly showed that a tall beautiful woman was just as strong and capable of fighting as any male counterpart. Just when fans thought she was done, Lawless moved on to Battlestar Galactica and proved that she still had the action chops to hang with the big boys.

Michelle Rodriguez / Randy Couture

Michelle Rodriguez may not have the true fighting experience of Couture but she more than makes up for it in terms of action films. In just about every action film she has appeared in she is a shining example of a strong female character. The Fast and the Furious, S.W.A.T., BloodRayne and Avatar are great examples of her ability to act tough and kick all sorts of butt.

Angelina Jolie / Steve Austin

Few would argue that the sexy Angelina Jolie doesn’t belong on this list and it’s with good reason that we place her on here as well. She’s a strong actress with a decent staple of actions films under her belt including Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Beowulf, Wanted and the role she is most well known for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Even in the upcoming action film Salt, she looks like she belongs in an action role.

Linda Hamilton / Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis in The ExpendablesBruce Willis has a very limited role in The Expendables but his face and action films are very well known - and the same thing is true for Linda Hamilton. Her role as Sarah Connor in The Terminator forever solidified her persona as a female badass. If anyone wants to argue that point then I encourage you to watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day as she pumps a shotgun with one arm and blows the hell out of a T-1000.

Brigitte Nielsen / Arnold Schwarzenegger

Who better to represent one of the best known action film stars of all time than the woman that fought alongside both Schwarzenegger and Stallone in the 80s? She played Red Sonja in both Conan and her own movie and also played Ingrid in Stallone’s Cobra. She sort of lost her way in the lesbian-laced Chained Heat II, found her soul mate on VH-1’s the Flavor of Love and rounded out her trifecta of oddness by having plastic surgery on a German reality show. Still, she deserves a spot on our list just for her original action role as Red Sonja.

Pam Grier / Eric Roberts

What Expendables list would be complete without a bad guy? Eric Roberts has played his share of bad guys throughout his long film career - and he did it not only with great martial arts action but some fair acting chops as well. Trying to replace him is a tough order but I think Pam Grier is up to the challenge. She’s best known for her roles in Foxy Brown and Jackie Brown but she also played a badass woman in Women in Cages and Above the Law. Grier would make a great antagonist for our female Expendables.

The Expendables All Female Cast Group PictureThose are our choices for an all-female Expendables crew. Regardless of what you might think of the choices, you have to agree that if done right, a movie in this vein would be absolutely phenomenal to watch on the big screen. It would make for an interesting storyline for a future Expendables movie. If you would like to have the All Female Expendables Team pic as a wallpaper we have it available in the following sizes:

1024x768 - 1280x960 - 1600x1200

Who would you add to our list and who would take out?The Expendables blasts onto screens August 13th, 2010.

Most women cast in a film like this would probably have to have some kind of real life talent, or real life mean-streak to be a member.
Gone are the women who live for the red carpet walk. Gone are the women who need wire-work to make their stunts look good, or those who kick but for the sake of striking a pose.

Here’s my question. How do you get all these women together for a plot that isn’t silly, without sexualizing them? I (personally) would like to adorn the characters for the merit of what they do, before how they look or what they wear. Sure, they are women, so there is going to be sexual interest anyway. But those who can take pain as well as dish it out in a triumphat comeback, is hot.

I’ll post some ideas soon. What do you got?

    • What about the chick from Haywire, she was amazing!Gina Carano

      • Thank you! They should include Gina Carano, she’s awesome

        • hell ya i 2nd that!

      • there is going to be a movie with Gina Carano and Katee Sackhoff!!

    • I would have taken Gina Torres (Firefly’s Zoe) to stand for Terry Crews. She’s the most beautiful badass!

      • @Qualia – Good choice. Don’t know why I didn’t think of her.

        Paul Young

  2. for those that want to put women down as not being able to kick butt in a REAL fight,i think we should bring in some women martial artists, policewomen, etc to see if they can kick your butt.i bet they could!!!!

    • That was a dumb response that resolved nothing

  3. Fun list here. I’d only substitute GINA CARANO for Michelle Rodriguez on here. Why? Because like Couture she is also a MMA fighter with a budding acting career.

    • Have u seen ginas new movie trailer for haywire? It looks pretty stupid.
Gina could pull off action movies, unfortunately her first looks pretty bad

  4. Can’t believe some of the comments on this article! I mean some get it then totally blow it away with their own perceptions.

“only because we wanted to find appropriate (age, popularity, etc.) counterparts to the male actors in The Expendables.”

That statement says it all, and they even say why UMA THURMAN, RHONA MITRA, and the likes are not on the list. Kate beckinsale over Angelina!?!?!? or pretty much anyone that people have said needs to replace her have all been absurd. No producer or director would drop angelina for kate, kate isn’t a household name which is what the expendables cast is full of and indeed that this list tries to promote.

Take a survey of female action stars and pretty sure actors listed here would be the top 10.

If the expendables went after a cast of “actual fighters” pretty much only jet li,austin, and randy would have made the cut then filled it with a bunch of unknowns that noone would have cared to see. Expendables is a film that pays tribute to ACTION MOVIE STARS!! only reason couture, Terry, Mickey, and austin are in it because, segal, van damne, wesley snipes, and chuck all had other things to do. I mean come on Curtis “50 cent” Jackson came before terry.

  5. Loved it!!! Perfect female cast.

  6. That’s the problem. How do you get a group of badass women together believably? Without sexualizing them. Or placing them on a vacation resort running in bikinis, especially a resort where there are probably men who could handle the job.
When men fight, its believable. When women do it, its fetish.

  8. a female ‘expendabels’ should have, bodybuilders to make this movie work. now i would cast rachel mclish, corey everson & kiana tom as the bad girls in this. if you don’t know who they are looking them up, other wise this idea might work.

  9. That’s tight. If they put JCVD in the second expendables movie, I hope they get a female version of him.

  10. There wont be an expendables woman version.
The expendables movie itself was retarded(my opinion), but when it comes to women kicking ass u always have to add some kind of fantasy/sci fi element to it.
look at the biggest turd example; SUCKER PUNCH. Women didn’t even show up for that one.
Im tired of female empowerment movies, it feels so forced. So obviously gender promotional. Women get strong only because guys get dumb and super light weight.

    • Hanna is a good action movie with realistic female combat.

You make it sound like it’s the fault of women that action movies with female characters feel forced. Like they aren’t realistic because female hand to hand combat doesn’t exist in real life. That’s not true. Milunka Savić, Marina Raskova, Ljudmila Michailowna Pawlitschenko are only few examples of real female war heroes. Blame the male producers and the audience for not being able to take women seriously.

Aren’t action movies with male protagonists male empowerment movies who are also gender promotional? Don’t be such a hypocrit. Girls need heroes just as much as boys do.

    • I forgot to mention Kill Bill.

      • I still believe the list on this site is ridiculous.
All these actresses are the strike-a-pose type, wit the exception of a few.
im hoping there is something in gina cleaning that sparks her a better opportunity for action in another production.
Something closer to LONG KISS GOODNIGHT with gina davis.

      • Am a woman and I never liked kill bill but I like the character

    • Total Recall (fight between Rachel Ticotin and Sharon Stone)
      Supercop (Michelle Yeoh against everyone)
      Tomorrow Never Dies (Yeoh again)
Aliens (Sigourney vs. the Alien Queen)
The Fifth Element (Jovovich vs. Bangalores)
      Foxy Brown
      Lady Dragon

  11. Alice would kill ripley so fast it would just be funny(=

  12. i think Gina Corano would be a better choice to match against Coutoure seeing as how she is a real fighter haha

    • @Vickie – At this point I would agree with you but at the time we put this list together she hadn’t made a film yet :(

      Great suggestion though.

      Paul Young

  13. Kate Beckinsale??????

  14. Jamie Lee Curtis, hands down.

Still great list! I would pay good money to have an all female showdown!

  15. Hey you guys forgot UMA THURMAN (Kill Bill), SCARLETT JOHANSSON (The Avengers) and the baddest of them all CHLOE MORETZ (Kick-Ass).

    • @Victory – We didn’t forget them. Just didn’t have remove on the team for them :)

      All great suggestions though.

      Paul Young

  16. Whole lot of people taking this too seriously. It’s a great list. I have said from the first Expendables that the next one should include some women, maybe even as the bad guys, to add to the fun.

The three I chose are Sigourney for the leader with Michelle Rodriguez and the actress that played Vasquez in Aliens as her hench(wo)men. Obviously, there are better choices than the “Vasquez” actress but both she and Michelle have ties to Sigourney, so it works with the picture I have in my head.

And I see their Liam Hemsworth and raise them Jennifer Lawrence.

    • Her name is Jeanette Goldstein.

  17. what about Kate Beckinsale???

  18. Hamilton, Weaver, Nielsen, Mirren, Lee Curtis, Loken, Jones, Lawles? Liu?
Por ahí también Jolie, Jovovich, Mitra, Rodriguez, Thurman, Carano….

  19. A good african american female action star from the past would be Pam Grier. She did plenty of action packed Blaxploitation movies back in the day like Friday Foster, Foxy Brown and Coffy.

  20. I cant believe you guys didnt include Sarah Michele Gellar

  21. My list includes:
    Sigourney Weaver (Alien/Avatar)
Michelle Yeoh (Queen of Martial Arts)
Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft) – (even if its just to crawl under a lazer beam)
Cynthia Rothrock (Martial Arts superstar – Hong Kong – a REAL bad ass)
    Milla Jovovich (5th Element/Resident Evil)
    Lucy Lawless (Xena Warrior Princess)
    Lucy Liu
    Uma Therman (Kill Bill)
Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
    Linda Hamilton (terminator)
    Kate Beckinsale (UnderWorld)
    Rhona Mitra (Underworld)
    Cameron Diaz
    Scarlett Johanson (Iron Man)
    Demi Moore (GI Jane)
    Charlize Theron (Aeon Flux)
Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Men in Black, Bulletproof)
    Vivica A. Fox
    Michelle Rodriguez
    Brigitte Nielson
    Pam Grier
And a cameo from Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman)

  22. OH C’MON!!! Where’s Sarah Michelle Gellar!? Many years of being the chosen one, fighting baddies, stopping apocalypses on a monthly basis at least. Srsly, i only know the chick off terminator and the other off Alien and Angelina Jolie- the others i was like- who are these people?!?!

  23. Chloe Morretz anyone? Young, but incredibly badass

  24. Dude, CARRIE ANN MOSS!! Trinity?! Matrix anybody?!

  25. I would drop Pam Grier as the leader of the,”bad girls”;and, put Ms. Grier as the female version of Mickey Rorke. Then, I would make Actor,Angela Bassett as the leader of the,”bad girls”. Why? If you have seen Ms. Bassett in the cult classic,”Strange Days”,you’ll understand. Plus, you need someone with the acting chops and vast experience she has in order to get the other Actors,in the movie;and, the ticket buying public to say with a straight face,”Damn’…SHE’S in the movie?! Cool…I’m in!!!”

  26. How could they forget Lucy Liu, she will be the star of the show.
