The folks over at Empire had a little chat with Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man 2 and its super-successful predecessor, as well as Mickey Rourke, that other famous comeback actor in the movie.
Favreau hinted at the story arc for Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark character and little about Don Cheadle sporting some cool tech as the eagerly anticipated War Machine. About the plot, Favs says that Mr. Stark is under a ton of pressure and that he needs an outlet for that (alcohol?). As for Jim Rhodes, Favs had this to say:

“Rhodes is definitely stepping up in this film. Let me put it this way: Tony’s not the only person with technology in the film.”
We already knew that we’d be seeing the character sport the awesome War Machine armor from back in April. It was hinted prior to that during the first movie and was rumored back when Terrence Howard was still to play Rhodey in the sequel.
Empire also had a chance to talk with Mickey Rourke, who’s come out of nowhere to be participating in a plethora of big films in recent times. After all the confusion surrounding what character he’d be playing in Iron Man 2, it continues to look like it’s Whiplash and not Crimson Dynamo.
In the conversation, Rourke gave some info about the suit he’ll be sporting in the film:
“I’m having the time of my life! It’s been really brutal, because my Iron Man suit weighs 23lb. It’s sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison.”
From what Rourke says, we can knock out the rumored concept art design of Whiplash that we saw just over a week ago. What Rourke describes sounds pretty cool though – I wonder if they’ll be making him look bigger like they did with Vinnie Jones’ Juggernaut in X-Men: The Last Stand. Either way, it sounds pretty cool.
As soon as we get more info on the character designs (and hopefully, some new pics!), we will let you know.

Rourke better be awsome in this movie. The Wrestler was a good movie that put him back in the spotlight and I hope his role in IM2 keeps his success rollin’.

Bleh… so it is Whiplash. Or a hybrid of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash… since the Whiplash (now known as Blacklash) of the comics isn’t Russian in his origin. Somewhat strange, but I guess Iron Man doesn’t have much of a rogues’ gallery anyway.
This feels like kind of a warm-up to Iron Man 3 to me, because we all know Mandarin will be the villain in that one. I suppose it’s not too bad an idea. Well, I’m sure the scenes of both Iron Man and War Machine in action should be enough to satisfy for now.
I don’t know what to say.

I am of the opinion that right now the only 2 directors who should make superhero movies are John Favreau and Christopher Nolan.

I wish Favreau would come out and definitively say that Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man aren’t in the film. I think that Rourke will be playing a character that is an amalgam of Whiplash and Dynamo.

Here’s the deal guys.
Jon has lifted some choice plot points from Crimson Dynamo’s back story. He doesn’t want people poring over back issues trying to get clues about what happens in the movie. His only choice? Send up red herrings and false rumors. Rourke plays a Russian dude in a mech suit, doesn’t take a Mensa member to figure out who that character is.
I still ain’t buying its whiplash. He never once said Whiplash. A Russian in an “Iron Man” suit? C’mon already!
The prospect of a “half-suit… half my skin showing” outfit doesn’t ease my mind much. All Iron Man has to do is zap Rourke in the fleshy bits!
Over at the forums at http://www.advancediron.org/forums it’s being discussed that perhaps Rourke starts out as Whiplash, gets his butt kicked and then comes back as Crimson Dynamo…

Shiny. Rourke was magnificent in The Wrestler & Sin City, so I’ll be happy whether he’s playing Crimson Dynamo, Whiplash, Crimson Whip, Dynamic Lash, or Wilford Brimley.
@ Vic, I could probably accept that if that’s what’s going to happen. It would also explain why they’ve been so hesitant to say the name of the darn villain.

Was that Micky’s real body in The Wrestler? If so, he just needs to stay bulky because that look would work. They can call him Teenybop for all I care; just match, at least, the first movie. Fav’s is fast becoming my favorite director.
arell, the “half suit” comment is most likely similar to what we see RDJ wearing inside the doughnut…I.E. the rest of the suit gets filled in with CGI to allow the actors better movement.

That’s a good theory, but why would they put Russian tattoos on his exposed skin if they were just gonna cover ‘em up with CGI armor?
