Fast and Furious franchise star Tyrese Gibson publicly asks Dwayne Johnson not to prioritize the Hobbs spinoff over Fast and Furious 9. While most of us typically stand clear of constructive criticism of our co-workers on social media, some of the movie stars of Fast and Furious like to take jabs at one another on the very public photo platform Instagram.

Last year, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson used his account to complain about “candy asses” among his co-stars on The Fate of the Furious. In June, Michelle Rodriguez took to her account threatening to “say goodbye to a loved franchise” if the filmmakers don’t “show some love to the women.” Now, it appears, Gibson is the latest to use his personal Instagram to discuss the future of the franchise.

In a since deleted comment on one of Johnson’s recent Instagram posts, Gibson pleaded for the actor to not “move forward with that #Hobbs movie.” This refers to the possibility of a spin-off from the series focused entirely on Johnson’s character Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. Gibson’s comment continues on Johnson’s post as follows:

“…You will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter. I don’t wanna hear from you until you remember what we talked about. I’m on your timeline cause you’re not responding to my text messages – #FastFamily is just that a family…….. We don’t fly solo.”

Gibson’s main issue has to do with Johnson not prioritizing a straight return installment of the franchise at full throttle. In another post yesterday (which has also since been deleted) on Instagram, he further extended his plea to Johnson, who already has a very full slate of projects both in the can and about to go before cameras.

I have never and will never have a problem with this major movie star he’s my brother. I’m simply trying to reach him cause he won’t call me back about this solo #HobbsMovie I want you to shoot it just not right now cause the #Fast9 release date has already been announced and we can’t let our loyal fans #FastFamily or our loyal fast and furious FANS down on any level from pushing the date…….. Didn’t you see how HUGE #Fast8 was? It’s because we announced and KEPT our release date bro.”

Adding that he “didn’t like Bay Watch [sic]” but he did “rent out two full theaters and take a bunch of kids to Moana,” Gibson channeled the smooth-talking Roman Pearce character he’s played in five of the franchise installments. “Call me back DJ,” he said, “I’m doing this for the #FastFamily.”

The actor is referencing Universal Studio’s announcement that a (likely to be retitled) Fast & Furious 9 and 10 have been confirmed for April 19, 2019 and April 2, 2021, respectively. While there are no plot details of the ninth Fast & Furious film other than a few words from director F. Gary Gray and the possibility of a return of Charlize Theron as Cipher, the behind-the-scenes drama continues.
