‘Fast & Furious 7′: James Wan Confirmed to Direct; Dwayne Johnson Will Return

Once it had been confirmed that Fast & Furious 6 wouldn’t shoot back-to-back with the seventh installment, the natural assumption was that Fast & Furious 7 wouldn’t release in theaters until 2015 (at the earliest). That changed this month, after Vin Diesel dropped the news that filming on the seventh movie begins this summer, followed two weeks later by Universal’s formal announcement of a July 2014 release date target.

Fast and the Furious producer Neal H. Moritz is out and about promoting the sixth installment right now, which has provided him the chance to clear up a few things about the seventh movie; that includes who is directing – now that Justin Lin (Fast and the Furious 3-6) has stepped aside – and whether or not Dwayne Johnson will make an appearance as Agent Luke Hobbs.

Development on Fast & Furious 7 began well before Fast & Furious 6 entered production, because (according to Diesel) the amount of story and character relationship payoffs set in motion during Fast Five became too much to handle for a single movie. Moritz re-affirmed the start date for the seventh installment, during a recent interview with Collider.

To quote:

“Yes, we are gonna film this summer.  We have been talking about it for quite a while, because while we’re making any of the Fast movies we’re always talking about what could happen in future Fast films.  So it’s something that we have been talking about for quite a while.”

By extension, it sounds as though Universal always intended to get Fast & Furious 7 into theaters as quickly as possible, but without resorting to the problematic back-to-back production scheduling (for more on that, listen to the Screen Rant Underground Podcast crew’s discussion). Hence, while Lin’s departure came as a surprise to the rest of us, it might have been something the studio anticipated well in advance.

James Wan The Conjuring Fast & Furious 7: James Wan Confirmed to Direct; Dwayne Johnson Will Return

James Wan is directing ‘Fast & Furious 7′

Speaking of surprises: the decision to approach director James Wan to replace Lin on Fast & Furious 7 was not at all the obvious choice, given that Wan is known for making horror fare (Insidious, The Conjuring) and extremely gruesome material (Saw, Death Sentence). That’s not exactly the sort of resume that makes a filmmaker seem like a good match for a consumer-friendly series that’s big on action set pieces and eye candy.

Moritz confirmed that Wan is directing Fast & Furious 7, adding that:

“He’s a terrific, terrific director at the top, top of his genre.  He’s done everything you could do in the genre he’s been working in, and as he said to me the other day, everything he has trained himself within that genre has been so he could take the next step up into something like Fast & Furious. I’ve always been a fan of his, he’s one of the people that we initially had on our list as a possible replacement, but I can just tell you when he came in and told us what his vision was, when he left the room we all looked at each other and said ‘That’s our director.’”

Wan, as I’ve mentioned in previous articles, has earned a reputation for being a hard-working and efficient director; case in point, he will release The Conjuring this summer, followed by Insidious Chapter 2 just a couple months later. Moreover, he’s skilled in the area of using practical tools and in-camera techniques, which is in keeping with Lin’s philosophy that “CGI never replaces the real thing” when it comes to stunt-work and spectacle.

As for his lack of big-budget filmmaking experience: similar to how Joss Whedon had plenty of assistance tackling The Avengers – and Colin Trevorrow will collaborate with seasoned blockbuster producers while he directs Jurassic Park 4 this year – Wan will have the support of people who have been making these Fast and the Furious movies for over a decade now.

Dwayne Johnson The Rock Fast and Furious Spin Off Fast & Furious 7: James Wan Confirmed to Direct; Dwayne Johnson Will Return

Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs in ‘Fast & Furious 6′

Lastly, despite rumors that Agent Hobbs could get his own standalone movie at some point, there’s reason to wonder if Johnson will have to pass on Fast & Furious 7 due to him headlining director Brett Ratner’s Hercules comic book adaptation (which also begins production this summer); at the least, it’s unlikely the actor will play as central a role as he does in Fast & Furious 6.

For the time being, all Moritiz has confirmed is that Johnson will show up in some capacity in Fast & Furious 7, by saying:

“It’s a new chapter, but The Rock will be involved as well.”

Fast & Furious 6 stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky, Gina Carano, Luke Evans, Joe Taslim and Clara Paget.

Look for Fast & Furious 6 in theaters (regular and IMAX) on May 24th, 2013.

Fast & Furious 7 hits theaters on July 11th, 2014.

  1. I can only agree with what was said in the podcast: they are moving way too fast. Just because these movies are called Fast & Furious it doesn’t mean that their production has to live by that title. They had a good thing going with Fast Five and part 6 looks really good, too. Don’t shouldn’t ruin a good run by becoming greedy.

    • *Don’t = They

    • My bad, Fast and Furious 7 script is already done, so a year to film and edit should be no problem

      • Can’t wait gonna be great

      • If you want to be a good imposter you need to spell the name correctly.

  2. For the love of all things film. Stop making these movies. The first one was enough , I was graduating highschoool when this series started. It needs to end.

    • Nobody’s forcing you to watch them so get over it. Fast Five made plenty of money so apparently it still has an audience, and it was the most successful critically.

  3. They should have hired Rob Cohen, the guy from the first movie instead.

    • Yeah the first one was great, so I wouldn’t mind having that director back. I have concerns about the one they chose, judging by his past work.

  4. I hope the seventh one is the last. Please. It has gotten better with Fast Five, but they should know where to stop.

  5. @ that guy, first of u suck, these movies got better with 2009′s fast & furious. Anyways still wondering if lucas black will show up in 7

    • @JoeyNuttz

I’m sorry I don’t get into arguments with anyone under the age of 12.

The series has shallow writing , and one note actors. Sorry the film series is just not for me.

  6. As long as they had the story for Fast 7 while Lin was involved, everything will be fine.

  7. trolls hating i see…..

  8. That’s six Fast and Furious films too many.

  9. wan will do a great job, you will be surprised when you see the movie, he shot the saw movie in 18 days, and I was really surprised when I watched it for the first time, I hadn’t seen anything like it. He will become one of the best directors in the industry, after fast and furious 7 everything is gonna change

    • Get Justin Lin back and postpone Fast & Furious 7 to 2015 or it will flop badly. Universal managers really want to release another 2 Fast 2 Furious movie ?

      • dude 2 fast 2 fuieous was awesome it didwillti was Tokyo that flop it was canforemd

  10. very good

  11. What the heck is wrong with you people? (trolling I guess) What in the world makes you think you have the right to say someone needs to stop making movies? If you don’t like them, DON’T GO! Don’t rent, don’t watch on spike.

You morons thinking like this really should wake up and smell the coffee because the world doesn’t revolve around YOU! Millions of fans and movie goers keeping the movie at a record setting pace COMPLETELY disagree with you.

    • AMEN!

  12. Get Justin Lin back and postpone Fast & Furious 7 to 2015 or it will flop badly. Universal managers really want to release another 2 Fast 2 Furious movie ?

    • That was the “Rocky 5″ of the franchise.

I wonder if anybody from Tokyo Drift will come back for the next one.

  13. This franchise is clearly getting milked for cash, because the end of 6 would have been a great ending for the series…

But at the same time 6 was actually very good and an entertaining watch, so part of me wants to see more of it.

  16. I loved what they did with FF6 because it tied the whole series together. I’m excited to see where they go with FF7 but I must admit i’m nervous to know that Justin Lin isn’t directing this installment. I only question, which I think would be even more freaking awesome, is will they bring back Lucas Black seeing that he was there when Han died, and that he was friends with Han. I would think that once the “accident” was not an accident, that he would want to come back to avenge his friends death and try to join torretto’s team. I want him to come back I think it will make the bridge between FF1,turbo charged,2,4,5,6, los bandaleros and tokyo drift stronger.

  17. Is it possible IF Joe Taslim still play on fast and furious 7?

  18. I hope Riley and Han return. I’ still can’t get over of what happened to them.

    • I meant Gisele.

  19. Fast and Furious for Ever! You can take it so many places,,
Put me down for number 8, I am ready. I am Brian’s long lost brother. I have been following his movements for some time but it is only when we clash we realise our opposition to each other is skin deep. With authorities keeping their eyes on myself and Brian, things become interesting as the U.S. up the pressure across the globe to track and capture Brian, not realising that I(another federal officer)will be prepared to protect my family. It takes us across asia until ………

  20. They can make fast 7 really awesome if they get the story right some members of the crew can be sent off to Tokyo to take down shaw’s brother and the rest in middle east (note: Fast 7 will also be shooting in middle east) there Dom can meet Sean and it can go on from there and after the seventh one a 2 part finale would be could with Braga(fast and furious [4]) and Carter (2 fast 2 furious) with at-least a good motive to bring down Dom and his crew it would also be good to see the chick from Fast 2 and conflicts between Mia & Bryan could rise……….. Just Sayin’

  21. omg im so excited about this! but they should deffo bring han back! and i would be nice if sean could make an apperance!!

  22. I think James Wan, is not suitable for “The Fast and the Furious 7 of the Constitution.
Man as a horror filmmaker inappropriate action movie genre.

At least I think that “Fast and Furious” to further collapse.

and Han on you to be alive. In other parts.

Well, if you are a new director, damage the “Fast and Furious”, and make them as 5, 6 parts.
    And a lot of action.

In addition, as a result, which consists of 5.6 parts and not Tokyo – Japan.

  23. tokyo drift is the only one for me

  24. all the parts of fast and furious are great plz go ahead and make fast and furious 7 by next year i cannot wait to see the 7th part.

  25. all the fast and furiouse filmes are good and u think they should make another 2 after fast 7 and then do the hobbs solo filme where he is fighting crime and the filme should end with hobbs taking the contract to track down dom and brian o connor

  26. i wreckan they should do a twist in fast 7 where they dom introduces lucas black to the rest of the crew and brian finds out that he is related to lucas and i all so think in fast 7 they should bring back the rest of doms crew from the first fast and furiouse and ian shaw breaks the villain from 2fast2furiouse out of prison to help him get reveng ive u all think about it ian shaw as a number 1 target and that dom so he gunna go for doms famil

  27. i wan,t to be a part of this amazing series. please tell me how i can be? want to act in fast and furious 7.

  28. Bring Han back.

  29. I am so looking forwad to seeing Han in action and hopes his girlfriend comes back or he finds new love
