As we have already discussed, the Fast & Furious franchise is, in many ways, a superhero franchise that rivals the biggest titles in the genre – and like any good modern-day superhero franchise, they aren’t waiting to make plans for the continuation of their universe, they are setting it up early and teasing it to fans now.

Franchise star Vin Diesel certainly has his head in the game right now; aside from juggling franchises like F&F and Riddick, he’s entered into the Marvel Movie Universe, playing CGI tree-alien Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, with a possible headlining role waiting down the line. Clearly Vin has been taking notes on how Camp Marvel handles business, because he recently talked up not only Fast & Furious 7, but dropped hints about what could be coming in Fast & Furious 8, as well.

As Metro UK quotes from Diesel’s talk with Extra: “Kurt Russell was the perfect person to introduce in 7 to play out the eighth storyline that everyone is going to go crazy on.” That’s confirmation that not only is Russell joining F&F7 as previously reported, he’s also in for part 8, as well (which is apparently already being planned out). Lot of info from such a small quote.

We still don’t know who Russell is playing – though from the seeds Diesel is planting, he’s probably going to be some sort of overarching figure (we’d say either ranking law enforcement agent or crimeboss – or both) whose presence in the story expands in the same way Dwayne Johnson’s character Luke Hobbs did. Since it’s Kurt Russell we’re talking about, we don’t expect there’s going to be much complaint from fans – and maybe some holdouts will be lured to the franchise as well.

That brings new additions to the F&F7 cast up to Russell, martial arts movie star Tony Jaa (Ong Bak) – and reportedly Games of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel (Daenerys Targaryen’s translator) has been added, too. Rumor had it we could also see UFC star Ronda Rousey join the cast, though that hasn’t been concretely confirmed yet.

With these new additions and returning headliners like Jason Statham, Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker and the rest of the usual F&F crew (perhaps some Tokyo Drift guests as well?), it’s safe to say that newcomer director James Wan (The ConjuringInsidious 2) is working with what might be the most high-profile cast in the blockbuster movie business, right now. Servicing everyone will be tough (pause for snickering…) but if anyone can get it done, we’re betting that a master of sequencing and execution like Wan can. Not to mention, his “gritty ’70s revenge thriller” approach has us very intrigued. That kind of throwback vibe made The Conjuring a refreshingly welcome vintage experience.

Finally, while all this casting news – and apparent plans for an eighth film – are swirling the Net, Wan and Co. are actually just starting to film Fast & Furious 7 - which franchise actor Tyrese Gibson (Roman) commemorated with this Instagram video:

Fast & Furious 7  will be in theaters on July 11, 2014 – with Fast & Furious 8 sure to follow soon thereafter.

  1. Jesus, how many are these are they going to make?

    • Oh man. Please stop! Its annoying and useless sequels. The car races are not need for sequels.. Maybe up to 3 or 4 then thats it. Now its the 7th and 8th ?! Oh jeez!! I dont watched it at all.

      • Then don’t complain. 4 5 and 6 were the strongest entries in the franchise. I’m pumped for 7. This series really is one of a kind, and so maybe its not Schindler’s List or anything, but it really is movie magic.

        • Well Said Bro! Though – no more hundred mile long runways please!!!

      • Say what you mean, the first one and the last 3 have been stellar and really changed away from the first two movies. When Statham was unveiled in the last movie the whole theater erupted like I’ve never heard before seeing a movie. These have gone from mediocre films to top notch action movies. Maybe you should go back and watch the last 3 before you condemn the whole franchise.

    • That’s what i was thinking. Might as well just say “Fast and Furious 25 confirmed”

To be followed by a TV series

      • I’d be in. Bring it on!

    • this is the worst running series ever.

  2. sweet fast and furious 8? im down. Maybe they can get justin lin to return for 8?

    • also, how is this going to work for jason statham? isnt he filming Expendables 3 right now?

      • He has said that they made it possible to film both.

  3. Wasn’t the series suppose to end after FF7? Oh well, why not get Jet Li, Stallone, Arnold, Chuck Norris, and all these Expendables cast too for FF8 and FF9 because that’s what it’s turning out to be now.

  4. Damn i love how every ff just keeps getting better

  5. As long as they keep making them better than 2 and Drift, let em keep working. 4,5,6 were wildly popular and made gazillions. I like having a decent summer action flick that isn’t preachy and political from time to time.

    • Me too. Good thing we haven’t had a preachy or political summer action flick in years. I certainly can’t remember the last time we had one.

  6. I read on a different site that Russell would be playing Jese’s father, in case you guys dont remember Jese was the kid who died in the first film he was part of Dom’s crew. Anyway he would essentially be a villain blaming Dom for his sons death.

Also Diesel has been quoted saying that FF8 will be like Escape from New York…. so yep.. do with that as you will….

    • So Vin will tell Kurt he thought he’d be taller?

  7. I thought seven would wrap things up…

Ah well, who am I kidding. Fast 6 was a fun movie.

  8. I really wanted Jason to be the Transporter in 7. But how many will they make? 6 was the second silliest one in the franchise imho.

    • Six was amazing and one of the best pure action movies of the year, if not the best.

  9. I find it funny how some people are upset that there are FF movies on the horizon. If you don’t want to see another FF movie, don’t see another one. Simple. Anyway, I am very happy with this news. I really like Kurt’s acting. I think that he is going to be a welcome and talented addition to the FF franchise.

  10. Lol they should do a crossover movie FF vs Expendables. Merge the two franchises inyo a super movie. Its essentially the same/similar fan base but seperated by age. FF has the youner crowd, expendables skews to the older.

    • Except I’m 29 and prefer The Expendables. The cast are better actors in that franchise (with the exception of Michelle Rodriguez and The Rock, they’re great) and Expendables doesn’t have dumb hip hop music being pumped into my brain constantly.

      • really? those movies have the sh*ttiest writers ever
not even close to fast and the furious

      • Yeah… you just proved his point. The “younger” crowd is early 20s and under.

      • Dumb hip-hop music? Really Jerk?

  11. I don’t give a F@*%K how many ff movies they make.

  12. For the geniuses wondering why the FF franchise continues. Its called “money” I know for some who dont make alot, might not grasp that concept. FF is a huge cash cow for Universal. Not to mention the movies are getting better and better, with fast five, six. James Wan is an amazing director, just sit, shut the f*** up and enjoy the movies.

  13. Let the studios make however many they want to make. Let Vin do whatever he wants. He won an Oscar! Oh wait did he?????

  14. 8! Sounds great! Can’t wait!

    • love this haha

      • Thanks! I appreciate!

        • awesome

          • Thanks Mark! Way to participate!

            • Ok I dropped the ball and didn’t contribute a rhyme, don’t judge me like I’m commiting a crime!

              • “don’t judge me like I’m commiting a crime!”…It’s all good! Everything is fine!

            • Haha I totally get this now mate

  15. Can’t wait for FF17 should be EPIC!

    • Vin’s mumbling might be even worse with age. He already needs subtitles.

  16. Statham will convince stallone and diesel to make The Fast and the Expendables. It will be where old or less talented actors go to pasture.

  17. This is probably the only series out there with decent post-trilogy installments. it’s also the only action series running that can be as ridiculous as possible and still take itself seriously. not to mention the fact that it actually has lasted this long! twelve years and counting! that’s just beautiful.

Kurt Russell? Yes please. This is the most entertaining series of movies currently being made, where plain dumb fun is still acceptable while being pretty good quality at the same time. Kurt will fit in perfectly. if only Steve McQueen was still around, I’d love to see him behind the wheel.

  18. YES! I never want this to end

  19. As for how many there going to make? I could see it ending at 10.

  20. I thought the series was to end after #7, as long as the movies keep pushing the envelope im good with #8, #9 #10

  21. Kurt Russell remains one of my all-time favorites. Like Michael Keaton and Kevin Kline, it’s always a treat to see him doing something new.

    • I feel the exact same way. Kurt, Keaton and Kline are all amazing actors.

  22. If Universal play this well, I see no reason why they couldn’t get at least 5 or 6 more movies from this franchise.

All people look for in these films is a cool action flick and with the cast, crew and behind the scenes team they have assembled that is easy to do.

I suspect that The Rock will basically ‘cameo’ in this film and that the main F&F linear story will carry on for 2 or 3 more films. In between these films I hope they can set up a Trilogy based on The Rocks character, these would be simple Interpol vs criminals films. These could go anywhere Internationally to keep them fresh, Australia for example.

Well done Vin and Co. Very much looking forward to more F&F films :)

  23. Can’t wait to see what James Wan does with Fast 7. :)

  24. Soon this franchise will catch up with Oceans Eleven haha

  25. As long as they are successful, they shall keep making sequels i guess. Its ok. I liked Fast 5 very much. Is Deepika Padukone in this one?? She is one hot hot woman!

  26. I like the fast movies but i thought fast 7 was the last one now they going to do pt8

  27. These type of movies would start with popular stars and cool scenes and then just degenerate into mindless, overlong and ridiculously unbelievable stunts and fights. In today’s day and age, movie-goers are savvier. They know for instance that you can’t hide behind cars when it’s being machine-gunned and survive and that cars don’t blow up on impact. Come on, give us all the actions but ones that don’t insult our knowledge and intelligence. We are not in the 60′s or 70′s anymore.
