‘Fast & Furious 7′ Starts Filming; Vin Diesel Talks Kurt Russell in ‘Fast 8′

As we have already discussed, the Fast & Furious franchise is, in many ways, a superhero franchise that rivals the biggest titles in the genre – and like any good modern-day superhero franchise, they aren’t waiting to make plans for the continuation of their universe, they are setting it up early and teasing it to fans now.

Franchise star Vin Diesel certainly has his head in the game right now; aside from juggling franchises like F&F and Riddick, he’s entered into the Marvel Movie Universe, playing CGI tree-alien Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, with a possible headlining role waiting down the line. Clearly Vin has been taking notes on how Camp Marvel handles business, because he recently talked up not only Fast & Furious 7, but dropped hints about what could be coming in Fast & Furious 8, as well.

As Metro UK quotes from Diesel’s talk with Extra: “Kurt Russell was the perfect person to introduce in 7 to play out the eighth storyline that everyone is going to go crazy on.” That’s confirmation that not only is Russell joining F&F7 as previously reported, he’s also in for part 8, as well (which is apparently already being planned out). Lot of info from such a small quote.

We still don’t know who Russell is playing – though from the seeds Diesel is planting, he’s probably going to be some sort of overarching figure (we’d say either ranking law enforcement agent or crimeboss – or both) whose presence in the story expands in the same way Dwayne Johnson’s character Luke Hobbs did. Since it’s Kurt Russell we’re talking about, we don’t expect there’s going to be much complaint from fans – and maybe some holdouts will be lured to the franchise as well.

That brings new additions to the F&F7 cast up to Russell, martial arts movie star Tony Jaa (Ong Bak) – and reportedly Games of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel (Daenerys Targaryen’s translator) has been added, too. Rumor had it we could also see UFC star Ronda Rousey join the cast, though that hasn’t been concretely confirmed yet.

With these new additions and returning headliners like Jason Statham, Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker and the rest of the usual F&F crew (perhaps some Tokyo Drift guests as well?), it’s safe to say that newcomer director James Wan (The ConjuringInsidious 2) is working with what might be the most high-profile cast in the blockbuster movie business, right now. Servicing everyone will be tough (pause for snickering…) but if anyone can get it done, we’re betting that a master of sequencing and execution like Wan can. Not to mention, his “gritty ’70s revenge thriller” approach has us very intrigued. That kind of throwback vibe made The Conjuring a refreshingly welcome vintage experience.

Finally, while all this casting news – and apparent plans for an eighth film – are swirling the Net, Wan and Co. are actually just starting to film Fast & Furious 7 - which franchise actor Tyrese Gibson (Roman) commemorated with this Instagram video:

Fast & Furious 7  will be in theaters on July 11, 2014 – with Fast & Furious 8 sure to follow soon thereafter.

  1. fast 6 was entertaining but its time to cap off a great run and put an end to this franchise for good.

  2. 6 Tied Tokyo Drift into things good and 7 was supposed to finish that part of the tie in I thought. So 7 will be finishing the tie in to Tokyo Drift and setting up the story for FF8,9 and we all are assuming 10. So like a bunch of us are thinking. 7 is a tie in movie and start a new trilogy piece for this franchise.

I’m game and at 38 yrs old I could do without the Hip Hop Bunny Hopping music. If we have to have it for the children. Then can we get as little of it as possible. They really need to transition into some good ole American Rock and Roll to go with Vin’s classic MOPAR’s.

I hope that if they make it to Australia in one of these movies. That we can see them put an Australian Charger in. This link has pictures of the car from Australia that i’d love to see. I’m American and love the look of the Australian MOPARS.

  3. After a shaky start following the first Fast & Furious I think they have come back and then some!! This is definitely a rare situation where the films just keep getting better and better. Personally I think they can get to 10. Maybe stop after that though!?!?

    Can’t wait until July to see number 7 !!! = D

  4. FF7 is the 8th iteration of the movie. This doesn’t confirm and 8th movie because 7 is the 8th.

  5. Hi my name is damien Auksorius , I still love to watch the very first episode of fast and furious , you could tell from the beginning that the movie was going to be more to come

  6. Hi my name is damien peter Auksorius , I still sit down and watch the very first episodes of fast and furious , Paul walker and vin diesel played excellent roles , and both deserved high praise for their great acting work , thanks again peoples

  7. To all the fans of the Fast Franchise, I’m sorry but in the respects of recent events, I will not be creating another script for ” Fast And The Furious”, for a very long time. I can’t bring myself to finish the Creation Script of Fast 8, I sit at night scripting for my personal Copyright, and the tears flow from loss of Paul Walker. I’m sorry fans, i cant fathom the loss from the cast. I’m not that great, even though. Thank-you. sh

  8. Imagine at the end of FF8 the screen says Sydney, Australia and then Mel Gibson in leathers steps out of the car!!!!!

  9. Kurt Russell needs to be in good shape for this and the next one. I don’t want to see him fat and bloated. I want to see him able to do fight scenes and driving too.

  10. 7 is last one

  11. When I all saw all the furious movies they were AWESOMENESS but I have some favorite characters on fast & furious 6 vin diesel , Paul Walker , Dwayne Johnson , Tyrese Gibson , Chris bridges , and Michelle. Come this year 2015 I’m going to watch fast & furious 7 on July 11 . U guys r the greatest characters that movie fast & furious 6 . But on fast & furious 7 its gonna be most biggest , greatest movie of all time make it beautiful when I see it .

  12. No background other than Brian being a cop has ever emerged only one was tyrese character ,, it would be awesome to find out that the guy in Tokyo drift would be brains little brother and that’s were Tokyo and fast tie up and join in filling in and Dom takes him under his wings in end of Tokyo as the new buster and hand over the reins of his crew to him ,,, and goes straight and have a family…but I doubt that since 8 is already under way…..

    • What’s going to happen to Pual walkers character is he still going to be in Fast And Furious 8 as well as the ones that come along
