Dominic Toretto's past catches up with him in unexpected ways in Fast & Furious 6, the penultimate installment in the urban street racing-turned heist franchise. An offer from federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) gives Dom the chance to reunite his scattered family after years of running from the law. However, this comes at a price: the criminal faction he must take down includes his old flame Letty (Michele Rodriguez), who has mysteriously reappeared after she was thought dead in Fast & Furious.

Screenwriter Chris Morgan and director Justin Lin are returning behind the camera, working reuniting with stars Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges. The new cast additions include Gina Carano (Haywire) playing Hobbs' new partner and Luke Evans (Immortals) as the law-breaking mastermind who stands between Dom and claiming his future (not to mention, reconciling his past in the form of Letty).

The Fast & Furious 6 trailers and story had us believing this might be the self-enclosed finale to the trilogy set in motion by events in Fast & Furious. A rumor about the post-credits scene setting up Fast & Furious 7 better explains how the Lin and Morgan are both wrapping up the Dom/Letty subplot AND tying off the threads left dangling since Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. It also goes back to Diesel's comments before the sixth movie began production, about there being too many plot elements to payoff in just two hours.

Fast & Furious 6 looks good for reasons that go beyond racing sequences involving tanks or set pieces in the shape of plummeting aircraft (though, those don't hurt, of course), as Diesel and Rodriguez discuss in the new featurette. The series themes of brotherhood, forming across the divides of ethnicity and class, appear to continue developing in satisfying ways. Besides, any film that gives metaphorical significance to fisticuffs between Carano and Rodriguez (representing Dom's future and past, respectively), is pretty awesome in my book.

Look for Fast & Furious 6 in theaters on May 24th, 2013.
