For the first time ever, Universal Pictures is airing a 60-second spot during Super Bowl XLVII, which will take a $7.6 million bite out of the marketing budget for Fast & Furious 6. With no teasers or trailers releasing yet for the franchise’s sixth installment, Universal wants to start strong in front of television’s biggest audience.
Vin Diesel said this day was coming and today Universal has been hyping the unveil with the release of a new Fast & Furious 6 poster and a brief still of one of the film’s crazy car-to-car stunts.
With over 38 million Facebook fans, Vin Diesel is the de facto face of the Fast & Furious franchise and many of the little details and unveils have originated from him, much like it has been for Riddick which he’s spearheaded into production despite years of obstacles. For the team-up car show coming Memorial Day Weekend, Diesel is just on piece of a growing puzzle which sees his crew come together for a mission that’ll clear their names after the events of Fast Five.
The push for larger scale action set pieces is resulting in more obviously CG effects. Excited for that Dom-Letty reunion teased at the end? I’m more excited for The Rock clotheslining that dude Vin Diesel is holding in the air.
Official Fast & Furious 6 synopsis:
Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.
Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.
Fast & Furious 6 is directed by Justin Lin and stars returnees Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky. The core cast welcomes newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.
