Fast Five Interactive Trailer Early Details About Fast and the Furious 6 Emerge

Fast Five doesn’t hit U.S. theaters until this Friday, but it’s already cleaning up at the international box office. The new Fast and the Furious film actually managed to outgross Thor in Australia over the weekend, while also getting off to a better start overseas than any of its predecessors. Hence why Fast and the Furious 6 (which is tentatively being referred to as Fast Six) looks to be all but a sure thing at this point.

Series star Vin Diesel and producer Neal H. Moritz have discussed their plans for a sixth Fast and the Furious pic before – and now there are some additional details about the flick, which franchise staple writer Chris Morgan has already begun working on.

Universal chairman Adam Fogelson offered the following bit to Deadline in a recent interview:

“The question putting ‘Fast Five’ and ‘Fast Six’ together for us was: Can we take it out of being a pure car culture movie and into being a true action franchise in the spirit of those great heist films made 10 or 15 years ago?”

Early word on Fast Five is that it does essentially transform the street car racing franchise into a heist series – like that of Ocean’s Eleven, albeit with more explosive vehicle chase sequences and shattering the laws of physics in general (not per se in a bad way, mind you).

Here is the logic behind that move, according to Fogelson:

“So if these movies were still about street racing, there was probably a ceiling on how many people would buy tickets. We wanted to see if we could raise it out of about racing and make car driving ability just a part of the movie, like those great chases in ‘The French Connection’, ‘The Bourne Identity’, ‘The Italian Job’.”

The Fast and the Furious series has certainly been an unusual ride (couldn’t resist) so far. When the third entry in the franchise – Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - hit theaters in 2006, it didn’t reach the same levels of box office success as its predecessors (especially in the U.S.) and seemed to indicate that these movies would soon be coming to an end. Skip ahead to 2009 when Fast & Furious hit the scene, and suddenly the franchise appeared more popular than ever. Now there may even be a new trilogy on the way.

While no one would argue that these movies are grand examples of cinematic artistry, they seem (to me) to be overall harmless bits of fun. They feature (by Hollywood’s standards) a surprisingly diverse cast that includes certain fan favorites like Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and now Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as well; not to mention that director Justin Lin’s preference for using practical effects instead of CGI has given the more recent Fast films their own unique flavor.

Transitioning into the heist genre with the next Fast and the Furious flick seems like a natural enough move for the franchise. If nothing else, I suppose it would encourage a bit more originality on the part of studio heads – and in this age of reboots, remakes, and requels (read: rebooting prequels or sequels) that’s definitely something to covet.

We’ll keep you posted on the status of Fast Six (or whatever it ends up being called) In the meantime, be sure to keep an eye out for our Fast Five review this Friday.

  1. tokyo drift was an awesome movie no doubt but it was put in the series to mess with people and bring in a different style of racing with new people

  2. Love Letty glad she is not realy gone …

  3. when han said “we’ll get there eventually” after that hot chick asked if they were going to tokyo the street sign above when he drives off if you look the sign shows that he is headed toward berlin, maybe im over looking it but i wouldnt be suprised to see Han in “fast 6″

  4. i love the movie especially since all the characters from all of the fast and furious are in this movie except michelle rodriguez, and the other guy that was with dom in part one( he was in pt 4 when dom almost had him w/the car engine). but what really stunned me was that they were saying that lettie maybe still alive thats what surprise me and my husband. in part 4 they show lettie being chased and the guy pointing the gun at her but it never showed if she really got shot at or he being taken to be examine on. so maybe she was shot and saved or went undercover since she was helping brian in part 4 when we thought she was dead but we’ll never know til part 6 comes out and cant wait til it does cause it will be next on my collections of all fast and the furious movies

  5. The reason why fast and the furious tokyo drift wasint all that good was due to the fact it had all new characters, not 1 familiar character, vin diesel and paul walker are 2 of the biggest reasons why people watch fast and the furious at all, there rivelry makes up half the movie. You can’t put in random characters and expext to do as well as the previous movies

  7. i say do more than one country in the next flick. An all out race against time type heist/race that takes place in different countries.

  8. An all out race against time type heist/race that takes place in different countries.

  9. keep it about the cars dont worrie about other movies stay the course of where you started

  10. As much as I fell in love with Fast Five when I saw it last night, and as much as I loved the action sequences, I will always love the car culture. I loved the original movie and the racing scenes so much, I named my drag snowmobile Letty. I believe that if more car culture were included it would enhance (why not have the culture and the action?).
Well, Letty is back. Letty was for the cars. So, let’s take that and use it as an advantage maybe? Eh, who knows. It is up to the producers.

This country doesn’t care about the cars anyways, when they pulled those beautiful GT40′s off the train in fast five, I was the only one that had a heart attack.

    a real car fan.

      • i agree 110% with you, i think the han situation will show that he breaks up with that girl in the end(can’t remember her name, in the Lexus LFA) and moves to tokyo and thats when he dies :(

      • for your information the fast&furious and the fastfive are in between tokyo drift not sure about the fastsix

  11. The only reason Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift sucked was that it didn’t have the original cast and it didn’t make sense, the cars and racing was the only good thing about this movie

    • actually TD is the last film of the series. Chronologically it takes place after the rest of the films. Also Letty is returning in the sixth one as the post credits scene in Fast Five suggests.

    • Letty IS back now in the sixth film, if you stayed around @ the end theyy showed she was still alive because everyone (Tyrese & Ludacris had “something” ToDo, haan was on his way to Berlin, and that’s where Letty was photographed pulling jobs. So it pisses me off also but it gets interesting now.

  12. fast five was a good movie, but it didn’t have the races that most people were witting to see. keeping the car culture and the story will get this movie going for sure.

  13. ok but I think TD should be remade and continue with what the fast and Furious 6 ends on,because you only see Hahn in TD and they don’t include anyone else from the original cast even though they show toretto at the end about to race which makes you think what happens after that TD

  14. cool it soounds likes its going to be a real good cool to the neat o max movie ps i wish all websites had your idea of thinking it would be a cool clean fowlingo free world cool inChrist allways fat billpage illusionist magician in fun same bat time same bat channel:)

    • you didn’t stay long enough past the credits, did you?????? One word. Eva Mendes cameo on LETTY.

  16. Fast Five was a crazy ride, although, some of the scenes were incredibly unbelievable in a real world scenario. That being said, I also missed the car culture. They have a short scene paying homage to it, BUT would it have killed them to include one of the actual races that won them their test cars? Love that they included Vince, one of the original F&F cast members in this pic. Anybody that hasn’t seen the movie yet … NEEDS to see the film through to the end of the credits … You won’t regret it!!!

  17. For me, these films are a great bit of fun and excitement, but they were never just about the cars and racing. How often these days do you find a movie about a guy who is dedicated to family, and protecting his family at any cost. From the first movie and now in 4 and 5, everything that Dom, and now Brian, has ever done has been motivated by the necessity to protect their families, the ones that they love the very most. While I love the cars, the races(which I missed in 5) it was still fast and furious. I felt like the script was well written, rather witty, and natural, simply because everyone on the cast knows one another(for the most part) and that is what really gets to you. And they never disappoint. I cannot stress enough that you shouldn’t leave the theater too soon after the credits. If you didn’t you;ll have defiantly learned your lesson. I never had to. One word. Eva Mendes cameo and LETTY!!!!!

    • I do. We always stay through all the credits, in alot of movies, you miss the best parts if you don’t. All the pirates films have a book end scene, and so did Fast 5. One that you DON’T want to miss. Mainly I stay to hear the music. Plus then everyone is gone and we don’t have to push through a crowd. They don’t know what they miss!

    • would you like me to spoil it for you? Personally, I found the whole movie to be amazing, and I can’t wait for Dead Man Stalking Either!!!!!

  18. spoil what?? don’t try that internet bull$h8t spoiler routine, it’s so old and tired! :)

    • I’m not exactly sure of what you speak in that last part, but what I mean is (if you didn’t stay past the credits) the scene that you missed. I’d tell you straight out what it is if you want.

  19. Nope, not even remotley interested!..I jus go along and see movies when they come out, not hang on YEARS re something I saw at the END of the credits! lol..I have other films looking forward to, Super 8 and Transformers 3, being a few! :)

    • Yeah… so you know about Letty then? T3 looks great… Pirates… Maybe green Lantern but defiantly not Cowboys and Aliens. No. Super Eight looked intriguing…

  20. I say that as long as Vin Paul Michelle and Jordana are in it everything is good. I mean the 6 movie could a few years after Fast Five and Mia and Brian could have their daughter/son hidden with somone they trust and someone they wont come after they will help Dom go get Letty go back and get their kid nd head to Tokyo then help Dom out in tokyo, the kid will b with them or hidden either way Mia better race enuf sed. nd i bet in Tokyo(in the 7th movie) the kid is lik at least 9 or 10 and knos whats goin on. Go F and F franchise and Go MIA!!!!!!!!!!

  21. I doubt we will see Brian or Mia in 6

    • I think if Justin Lin wants to make money off these movies he would bring bac Dom Mia and Brian cuz dose are da main characters even if they have a kid they can bring him/her wit dem nd have some one in that area watch him or leave him/her at home where somebody they trust can watch him. In Fast Five she sed promise me we will stay together nd he sed I promise so dey stickn together

  22. no in all reallity tokyo drift hasn’t even happened yet the sequence the movies go in are the fast and the furious then 2fast2furious then the newer one fast&furious and the fastfive not sure about fast six where that one ends up before tokyo or after

  23. The fast six will be more tremendous from classic. I really love car and of course, with flavoring of the classic cast this will be another history for this movie.
