From the first pages of Far Sector, it was obvious that a 'DC Young Animal' version of a Green Lantern would be something completely new. But after sending an Earth cop billions of miles away to the edge of civilization, to bring peace to an alien city, the last thing readers expected was a story looking backwards... to the golden age of noir detectives. But then, Green Lantern Sojourner "Jo" Mullein isn't one to do what's expected of her in ANY situation.
While set in an incredible and wondrous alien society, the mature comic series from N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell was careful to begin with an air of familiarity. Sure, Jo is investigating a murder on the other side of the galaxy, in the ageless and sprawling City Enduring. But murder is murder. What's more, the Council overseeing the coexistence of three formerly warring races -- known now as the Trilogy -- had requested help from a Green Lantern, expecting murders to begin just as they did. Now our exclusive preview of Far Sector #5 reveals that less than halfway through this sci-fi mystery, Jo Mullein is facing a case that could stump even the hardest-boiled of detectives. Luckily, she's not alone.
The previous issue dropped the biggest twist of the story so far, revealing Jo had not been sought to prevent a catastrophe or civil war the Trilogy were unprepared to handle. In fact, they had all the experience needed, having witnessed the rise of revolution -- then brutally put an end to it -- not once, not twice, but a dozen times in the past. But even if Jo manages to forge a different path, and truly make peace possible, that still leaves two grisly and completely unresolved murder cases that appear to be more and more important with each new twist. Naturally, our preview of Far Sector #5 reveals Jo is doing what any good detective would do. Well, any hard-boiled film noir detective would do.
