Official Far Cry 5 character details and a release date have been revealed, by way of an announcement trailer. After taking gamers to the Stone Age with the last entry in the Far Cry franchise, Ubisoft is taking players to an all-new Montana setting with Far Cry 5. This, in theory, will allow fans of the series (which has been around since 2004) to sink their teeth into various sandbox environments, teeming with hidden dangers and lurking threats.

In the past, Ubisoft has seen fit to send players from locations as vast and disparate as Micronesia in the first Far Cry to the Himalyas in Far Cry 4 (released in 2014). Along the way, there have been several spin-off titles - including last year's Mesolithic period adventure that is Far Cry Primal - but the franchise appears to be honing in on its origins with the release of Far Cry 5, as confirmed by the above announcement trailer.

Per an official press release issued by Ubisoft, Far Cry 5 will introduce players to protagonists Mary May, Pastor Jerome Jeffries, and Nick Rye, when it becomes available for purchase starting February 27, 2018. In addition, Ubisoft has seen fit to deliver a plot synopsis for the game:

As the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana, players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden's Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county. Caught off guard and drawn into a power struggle, players must disrupt the carefully laid plans of the Project at Eden’s Gate and fan the fires of resistance to help liberate the Hope County community and themselves.

Sure to deliver plenty of homegrown American mayhem when the title sees release early next year, Far Cry 5 is destined to pique the collective interests of anyone who has held even a passing interest in the series thus far. Only time will tell how successful the latest proper entry in the long-running series will be, but with any luck players will have plenty of grade-A material to sink their teeth into in due time.

Thus far, Ubisoft has managed to deliver several successive entries in the best-selling and critically acclaimed franchise that have managed to please casual and hard-core gamers alike, and by the looks of things Far Cry 5 will be no different. In the meantime, here's to hoping for the very best from the upcoming open-world, first-person shooter title.
