  1. They’ve already adapted a few books into movies and mini-series, including Going Postal, Hogfather, and I believe they were working on an animated version of Guards! Guards!

  2. I think the Vladimir Taltos series by Steven Brust would rock as a tv show or cartoon series.

  3. I was wondering why not the Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon I know lots of people who would jump at that one

    • DH will be a Series soon, check out Sherrilyns Webside :) ) first will be the Nick Chronicle movies tho….but yea this will be awesome.

  4. I love that you have the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss here…that would be so incredible if they did it right. I do think that you forgot to include Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. I know this is premature to add but I loved the first book and am eagerly awaiting the second. It is also meant to be a 10 book epic so it would have a looooong life (theoretically).

  5. I would love to see The Legend of Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore from the Forgotten Realms franchise turned into a T.V. series!!!

    • I only close clicked on this article to see if Drizzt is mentioned!!

    • I only clicked on this article to see if Drizzt is mentioned!!

    • Drizzt will always be my favorite character. Salvatore is able to come up with the best personalities.

  6. The Chronicles of Amber! In particularly ‘The Corwin cycle’.

  7. Can’t believe wheel of time isnt on this list i can only assume uv never read it u should its awesome!!!

  8. i should also state that im very pleased to see the Belgariad in here another great series

  9. Sadly there are three titles that no fantasy fan should forget. A for their name recognition with fans and tabletop gamers and B for their unique ideas of the genre.

    1) Ravenloft- Tragedy, Murder, Schemes, Vampires, the Undead, the Fae, The Mists and action. This is a no brainer people. Think of it in the veins of supernatural or Buffy. Four warriors stranded in a strange land battling in a world where evil rules and the things that go bump in the night are not only real but they are everywhere! Add to the fact that the Mists travel is unreliable and won’t release them until the dark powers are “done with them” and you have a series that would go on for many seasons and even allow for drama and cast changes. Get on it Hollyweird.

    2) Forgotten Realms- Drow elves, A massive fantasy city of intrigue, Serpentfolk schemes, legendary characters and a sprawling map that has been added and remarked on for nigh on 20 years. Welcome to Forgotten Realms. A sweeping land filled with deceit intrigue and more than just a set story. Figures like Drizzt d’Urden and Elminster make this realm amazing and would add depth by allowing us to relate to the characters as everymen compared to titans.

    3) Dark Sun- Say what you will but the world of Athas makes Dune look like Paradise. A harsh post apocalyptic world filled with psionics and powerful Sorcerer Kings. Magic has caused the death of this world and it stands as a great potential to make this a gripping drama about several figures trying to survive in this harsh world. One part Spartacus, One part Jericho, and one part Dune. This is post apocalypse but with a fantasy feel. Two great tastes that go together.

  10. Melanie Rawn’s Dragon Prince trilogy — i read it in the 90s and have been dreaming of it in TV/movie form ever since. How Sunrunners’ Colours and Star Sorcery would be depicted would be an interesting challenge to see faced down.. and the Colours of the Desert alongside all those other Kindgoms’ colours — always felt like a visual feast to my mind — and and and DRAGONS! =D” plot twists, the generational advancements…[andpossiblycontroversialsex] and a pretty darned large cast. haha i still want to see this someday. (and now i want to go re-read the lot again.. T__T”;; )

  11. I don’t understand how Michael Crider could fail to mention one of the most fundamental sagas by one of the very few genius fantasy writers (Michael Moorcock’s Elric) while he does mention a few others that may be good but clearly lack originality. Elric would translate into a dark, violent and epic TV show that I’d be absolutely thrilled to watch. Plus, thanks to Moorcock’s concept of multiverse, it could branch off into several spinoffs (Corum, Hawkmoon, Erekose…) with crossover episodes. Yummy!

Also, though not really a novel series per se (rather a collection of short stories followed by several other books in the same vein), I’d love to see an adaptation of The Silmarillion and since it absolutely can’t be adapted to the big screen, a TV show would be the ideal way of translating Tolkien’s remaining writings into moving pictures.

    • Yes, Elric is perfect for HBO/SHO – and leaving it out tells you that the author of this article is not well-versed in the genre.

  12. I would love to see Chrestomanci on screen, either in a movie or a TV series. I love Diana Wynne Jones’s world building.

  13. No one mentions Dragon riders of Pern? Anne Mccaffrey’s dragon rider books? especially the first one. That would make a wonderful movie! And with today’s special effects and such- it CAN be brought to life now!!

    • That would also be awesome to see! I like Ruth and Jaxom’s story and “The Dolphins of Pern”

  14. Um… Dragonlance ? Drizzt Do Urden ? The dark elf series ?

  15. I would like to see Anne Bishop’s Blood trilogy with the outlying books included as well. Dark and sensual and magical. It would be perfect.

  16. No Elric?

No Fafrd and the Grey Mouser?

    No Dragonlance?

    No Dragonriders of Pern?

No Earthsea (because the first attempt was such a pile of steaming vomit)?

    No Majipoor Cycle?

Oy, methinks the author of this article wasn’t qualified to write it.

  17. I was really expecting “the Wheel of Time” series by Robert Jordan to top the list…..

  18. You’ve overlooked – The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson

  19. I believe “wool” should be the next great movie to be considered.

  20. I would’ve said Steven Erickson series but I’m sire it would get butchered

  21. I would’ve said Steven Erickson series but I’m sure it would get butchered

  22. As great an undertaking it would be, Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series would make a series, the vast scope would probably mean it would either be a very watered down version or a masterful awe inspiring series.

A second series that would be great to see on the small screen is the secrets of the Imortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott.

    Just my two cents worth

  23. Mistborn and Dark Tower series are pretty awesome too and very TV friendly, and not necessarily family-friendly. SO overall, very suitable

    • The Dark Tower storyline might be a bit too convoluted and all over the place for a TV show and I would be extremely upset if they f*cked up King’s masterpiece. Better leave that book alone IMHO.
