Two of the biggest movie trends in recent years have been adaptations from young adult novels – Divergent, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, etc. – and of course, superhero blockbusters. Over the next six years, 40 Marvel and DC films will hit theaters; though each trend has its criticisms, such as whether or not there are too many superhero movies scheduled for release, these films largely perform well at the box office.

Another trend that may be about to hit Hollywood, as we’ve previously speculated, are movies based on video game franchises. The film that would kick off the video game movie trend is 20th Century Fox’s Assassin’s Creed, which was scheduled to premiere in August 2015. However, Fox has rearranged some of the studio’s 2015 release dates, delaying Assassin’s Creed.

In the same report that announced the long-awaited Deadpool spinoff from Fox, THR reported Assassin’s Creed has been taken off of the August 7, 2015 date. According to insiders, the movie won’t be ready in time; the script has undergone rewrites and there have been scheduling issues during production. Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four will replace Assassin’s Creed on August 7, moving from its original June 19, 2015 premiere date.

Additionally, Paper Towns will take June 19, moving up from July 31, 2015 when it was originally scheduled to premiere. Variety reported Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina) has joined Nat Wolff (Stuck in Love) to star in Paper Towns, an adaptation based on the work of John Green, whose other novel The Fault In Our Stars was brought to life earlier this year by Fox.

Though video game fans (and perhaps those that may be tired by YA adaptations and superheroes) are sure to be disappointed by the delay on Assassin’s Creed, Fox appears to be setting up its 2015 films for as much exposure as possible.

In its original date, Fantastic Four was in the middle of Jurassic World and Terminator: Genysis, with Marvel’s Ant-Man following two weeks later. Now, Fantastic Four will go up against the Jack Black-starring Goosebumps and has a similar release date to Guardians of the Galaxy, which proved August can be a financially successful month for superhero flicks.

Additionally, Paper Towns will now open against Pixar’s Inside Out and amid Terminator: Genysis, Jurassic World, and Ant-Man, which may prove to help rather than hurt the YA film. The date is also similar to that of The Fault In Our Stars, which grossed over $124 million domestically. It’s possible another Green adaptation will find just as much success with a June release date.

Of course, although Fox may be positioning their films in the dates they believe to be best for both Fantastic Four and Paper Towns, we won’t know how successful the movies will be until they debut next summer.

Paper Towns will premiere June 19th, 2015. Fantastic Four will premiere August 7th, 2015. Stay tuned to Screen Rant for more information on Assassin’s Creed as it becomes available.
