Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has yet to hit theaters, but plans for its first sequel are already well underway. J.K. Rowling (the Harry Potter author who marks her screenwriting debut in the new prequel series) has already penned the script for movie two in the planned Fantastic Beasts trilogy, as marketing on the first Harry Potter spinoff film begins to ramp up.
Now, a rather famous new face has been added to the cast list of the first pic to help tease what’s to come in the second installment as well.
As reported by THR, actress Zoë Kravitz has been tapped for a small role in Fantastic Beasts’ first film with plans for her to return with more to do in movie two – assuming the new series is able to recapture some of the monetary magic of the original seven book-turned-eight films round of witchcraft and wizardry.
This marks the fourth major franchise nab by Kravitz, who previously starred in X-Men: First Class, the first three installments to the Divergent series, and Mad Max: Fury Road. She’ll also appear in HBO’s anticipated adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, Lucia Aniello’s dramedy Rock That Body, and the Aaron Katz thriller Gemini in 2017.
Fantastic Beasts, which bows in November, is directed by David Yates, who helmed the final four rounds of the Harry Potter film series and is expected to return for Fantastic Beasts 2 as well. The film will be the first of Rowling’s wizarding stories to be completely Potter-free, as it takes place long before the events of the original series. If there was any concern about audience retention of the Harry Potter faithful, the recent release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts I & II should certainly serve to satisfy that – the print version of the script for the two-part play has sold 3.3 million copies in less than two weeks since its July 31st release date.
While Kravitz’s character in Fantastic Beasts is as-yet-unnamed, Yates has teased that the second installment to the new trilogy will go in “a whole new direction” from the first, which follows magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he tries to recapture a briefcase full of creatures he’s just unleashed on the no-majs (muggles) of New York. “The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further,” Yates teased. One might infer that a brief introduction of Kravitz’s character might give fans something to think about during the whopping two year in-between time ‘til FB2 hits theaters in November 2018.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will hit theaters in the U.S. on November 18th, 2016.
