It’s a Fantastic Beasts Feast! In the space of twenty four hours, an abundance of new images have been released for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Harry Potter spinoff movie focusing on the story of Newt Scamander, the fictional author of the Fantastic Beasts textbook that Harry, Ron and Hermione study at Hogwarts.
J.K.Rowling published the fictional work back in 2001 to raise money for charity, and she has also written the screenplay for the movie, which stars Eddie Redmayne in the central role. The latest batches of images from the movie also highlight other key players from the film – of both the Wizard and Muggle variety, as it were.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them logo has already been released, and earlier today we brought you the first look at Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, courtesy of EW. Redmayne graces the cover of the magazine this week, which goes on sale on Friday, November 6th. Also released by EW comes this image gallery, which gives us a good look at some of the other characters as well as filming taking place in London.
Take a look at the pictures below and then read on for our character descriptions and plot details for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:
Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander, is described as “the wizarding world’s preeminent magizoologist, who stops in New York following his travels to find and document magical creatures.”
Pictured above with Redmayne (as Newt Scamander) are Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs) and Alison Sudol (Transparent) are the Wizardly sisters (Porpen)Tina and Queenie. Rowling has already revealed that the pair – who encounter Newt when he travels to New York – have the last name of Goldstein and thus, are distantly related to Anthony Goldstein (a Ravenclaw student featured in the Harry Potter series). We also have Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury) as Jacob, a Muggle (non-Wizard) whom Newt befriends on his adventures.

Plot details are still pretty vague, but we do know Fantastic Beasts follows Newt as he tries to write “Fantastic Beasts”. Rowling has said that this movie should not be seen as a prequel to the Harry Potter series, but more an “extension of the wizarding world.” While the EW stills don’t shed much new light, it’s already known that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them takes place in 1926 New York – which will also potentially give rise to Newt discovering new species himself and, of course, documenting where to find them.
One thing is for certain: this film, directed by David Yates (director of the last 4 Harry Potter films) – pictured in the last of the above images – and its sequels (two are already planned), gives Harry Potter fans the chance to learn more about the mythical beasts in the wizarding world. There are many that we are familiar with from the past Harry Potter movies (Hippogriffs, Phoenixes, and so forth) but many more that are merely mentioned in passing, or just appear in one scene – if at all!
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2016.
