Anticipation surrounding the Fall release of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them continues to build; it’s been helped by the massive amount of publicity already building around the movie, as well as the recent resurgence of the Wizarding World with the arrival of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Fantastic Beasts stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a Magizoologist who stops into New York on his way home from his travels. He carries with him a magical case, full of the Fantastic Beasts he’s tracked down, and the film is based around what happens when some of those beasts escape.
Fantastic Beasts co-stars Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol as sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein, with Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski on the ‘good side’ as it were. Meanwhile, Colin Farrell takes on the role of Percival Graves, an Auror and Director of Magical Security at the Magical Congress of the USA (MACUSA) and a decidedly unfavorable character. Samantha Morton co-stars as Mary-Lou Barebone, founder of the New Salem Philanthropic Society and mother of Credence, played by Ezra Miller (star of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Barry Allen in the upcoming Justice League).
Though so far, not much has been revealed about Miller’s character, EW have released a new photo of Credence with Percival Graves, along with information about who he is. Though Miller himself is very vague about the role he is playing, joking that everything is ‘CIA-level’ in terms of secrecy, it is known that Credence Barebone is Mary-Lou’s adopted son, the middle child of three. He is, as the photo aptly depicts (see below), shy, withdrawn, and:
“Far more vulnerable than his two sisters. Credence is defenseless against the abuse that comes in response to the slightest infraction of Mary Lou’s strict rules. But his loneliness also makes him susceptible to the manipulation of Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), who has taken a personal interest in Credence.”
The depiction of Mary-Lou as strict is hardly surprising; she leads the Philanthropic society for a start and is seeking death to all witches and wizards, resulting in the Wizarding community keeping in deep hiding since they fear for their lives. The question is: does Credence want to assist his mother in her persecution of innocent people, or is he trying to find the strength within himself to stand up to her evil ways? The dark, imposing influence of Graves certainly won’t help Credence to find courage, and could land him in deep trouble, especially with his mother campaigning for ‘another Salem’ (Witch trials).
The chances are, that we won’t know. But, that said, there are a lot of character details out there for most other cast members, but not Miller’s Credence, which would give rise to a reasonable assumption that there is more to his being on the bad side than meets the eye. With each new plot detail, trailer, or character image that’s released, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them seems ever more exciting and certainly it seems as though the movie has a far more complex and intriguing plot and cast of characters than first thought.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2016, followed by Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 on November 16th, 2018.
