Now is the season for new trailers. In what is likely anticipation for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seems like every major franchise wants to piggyback on that success. We learned recently that Star Trek Beyond would have a trailer attached to the film, and recently we’ve seen the release of other trailers, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, The Legend of Tarzan, and even an X-Men Apocalypse trailer will be making the rounds come tomorrow. Many of these trailers will likely accompany Star Wars upon its release.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is one of Warner Bros.’ tentpole films next year. So it makes sense that they would also want a trailer released around now. We’ve already been given a peek at the logo and artwork for the film, and as many have speculated, a trailer won’t be far behind.
In fact, Warner Bros. has confirmed that the first trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released on December 15th. The news comes in the form of an announcement video that you can watch above.
The teaser gives nothing away about the trailer or the film itself. The only new content of note is the modified logo for the film with just the initials FB. Otherwise, this announcement teaser is incredibly minimalistic. The teaser doesn’t even have any sounds or music to accompany it. But there you have it, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will have its first trailer next Tuesday. Time to get excited.
The film tells a new and different story from the Harry Potter films, though it shares the same world. The screenplay was written by J. K. Rowling and is directed by David Yates (director of 4 Harry Potter films). Warner Bros. has also commissioned at least two sequels to Fantastic Beasts, due for release in 2018 and 2020.
The plot synopsis follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne, an Academy Award winner for The Theory of Everything) as he travels to New York City with his trusty, magical case. The case opens to reveal a bigger space on the inside (think Doctor Who) where he traps various fantastical beasts (think Pokemon). But besides that, we know very little of the plot.
Obviously, we will see a lot of magical creatures in Fantastic Beasts. A recent report named at least 7 “beasts” from the film, some of which were previously seen in the Harry Potter films, but others that will make their on-screen debut in the new film. Hopefully, the trailer will give us more of a glimpse of these magical beasts that give the film its name.
Apart from Academy Award-winner Eddie Redmayne in the lead role, the film also stars Ezra Miller (Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Flash), Gemma Chan (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs), Colin Farrell (Total Recall), and Ron Perlman (Hellboy). We have yet to know how each of these characters will interact, but we can probably expect some of those answers next week when the trailer debuts.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2016.
