[SPOILERS for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ahead.]
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is still playing in theaters, and doing a respectable trade, too. Taking Harry Potter fans back into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, Fantastic Beasts has managed to become a separate entity within a shared universe and, though the movie is not without its faults, it has certainly left fans wanting to see more of Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, and his magical adventures.
Just as well, really, since there are a further four films within the franchise. We know that Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) will be at the center of the franchise, tying Fantastic Beasts in nicely to the Harry Potter movies/ books, since Albus Dumbledore will be the one to eventually defeat the dark wizard in a duel, where he wins the Elder Wand. Other than that, details about the subsequent movies have remained unclear – though some new rumors may change that.
We know that Fantastic Beasts 2 takes place in Paris, and Credence Barebone will return. However, an accidental leak on IMDb has given a few additional plot details away, with The Leaky Cauldron being quick to publish them on their site, even though the original post has since been removed. That IMDb post read as follows:
“Newt tries to move on, but Leta keeps turning up when he least expects it. After a while, he realizes she is only there to tell him about Dumbledore, who needs to defeat Grindelwald.”
Fantastic Beasts fans will recall that Zoe Kravitz made a very brief appearance as Leta Lestrange in the first movie, when she appeared as a moving picture in Newt’s workshed. Fantastic Beasts 2 apparently picks up two years after the publication of Newt’s Fantastic Beasts book, when he is back in Britain. The Magizoologist is trying to sever emotional ties with Leta (which were evident in Fantastic Beasts), but apparently she keeps turning up- obviously to request help for Dumbledore.
Though Newt was expelled from Hogwarts, many will recall that Dumbledore argued strongly against his expulsion, and there seems to be some close friendship between the pair. It might well be that Dumbledore needs Newt’s knowledge of Obscurials, given that Grindelwald was highly focused on harnessing the power of the one that lived within Credence. Picking up on the very popular theory that Dumbledore’s sister, Ariana, was an Obscurial, could we see Dumbledore’s former friend and now arch-nemesis trying to use Arianna’s obscurus for his own personal gain? Though Ariana is dead by the time Fantastic Beasts takes place, we know from Newt’s work that it is possible to keep an obscurus alive even without its host. Has Grindelwald also managed it, or is another young child in danger from him?
Many questions remain, of course, such as where Tina Goldstein fits into Newt’s life 2 years after they met in New York, and how Queenie and Jacob will fit into the story, too. Not only that, but how does the action get to Paris, what is Credence up to, and how did he recover from seemingly being killed by MACUSA? It will all unfold in due course, but for now this little tidbit does give us something to focus on. Kravitz will play a larger role in the second movie, obviously, but what of her connection to Newt? How and what is it that bonds them, and will Newt get over her and realize that Tina holds his heart?
Though initially fans were worried that Rowling would not be able to spin the action out over five Fantastic Beasts movies, it seems as though Grindelwald’s reign of terror will give rise to many intricate sub-plots. Hopefully, those story threads will all weave together to create one long narrative that plays out well over the five movie duration.
