Family Guys Return of the Jedi Spoof trailer Two Trailers For Family Guy Return of the Jedi Spoof Its A Trap!

Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy has been synonymous with “pop culture parody” for years now, so it was appropriate enough that the show’s creators are now unleashing their Return of the Jedi spoof, Family Guy: It’s A Trap!, having already “skewered” the first two entries in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Two new trailers have been released for It’s A Trap!, which offers the same kind of low-brow humor and jokes (here, not subject to TV censors) that has helped Family Guy attract a solid cult following.

It’s A Trap!, replaces the classic Star Wars characters (Han Solo, Luke and Leia Skywalker, Darth Vader, etc.) with the characters from MacFarlane’s cartoon creation, but otherwise leaves the threequel’s plot intact. These Star Wars-inspired Family Guy movies don’t so much satirize George Lucas’ space opera; they mostly just stick to the formula of the original Scary Movie: re-enact scenes from a classic movie, but throw in some raunchy humor or pop-culture references for comedic effect.

While this formula can and has worked in previous movie parodies, it’s arguably a rather lazy approach to humor and when it fails the results can be painful. This first trailer for It’s A Trap!, for example, doesn’t even contain any legitimate jokes and revolves around the idea that seeing Family Guy characters recreate scenes from Return of the Jedi is inherently hilarious in and of itself.

Check out what we mean below:

The second It’s A Trap! preview does actually offer a glimpse at what the cartoon pic will offer in terms of comedy, which looks to include lots of innuendo, crude bits of bathroom humor, and references to a wide range of pop-culture items (like the internet meme/Admiral Ackbar quote from which the title originated).

Watch that trailer below:

Family Guy fans – this movie is for you. Everyone else will have to either re-watch Spaceballs or go on YouTube to get their share of laughs at the expense of the Star Wars saga.

Family Guy: It’s A Trap! arrives on DVD on December 21st, 2010.

  1. I hate Spaceballs!

And this looks ace, Klaus as Ackbar!!!! Almost as funny as Sheldon.

  2. Is this show dead yet? I haven’t laughed since the first season when it came back. South park summarized it perfectly with the manatees.

  3. Nice dude.

  4. OMG i cant wait for this…so funny!!!….Seth MacFarlane should expand this type of spoofing to include other movies…Peter griffin is “NEO” hahahaha

  5. i thought this was going to be called “We have a bad felling about this”

    • feeling*

    • That’ll probably be one the episodes if Family Guy does the Prequel trilogy. :P

  6. the first trailer isn’t supposed to be funny its actually near exact recreation of the original return of the jedi trailer
    check it out

  7. Looks funny!! I just hope the 2nd trailer didn’t give too much away…… Think they may have spoiled some of the jokes already by showing too many snippets.

    • I thought the same thing about the Something Something Something Dark Side trailer, and there were plenty of laughs left ;)

  8. I quite enjoyed Blue Harvest, but felt Something Something Sometihing Darkside was a dissapointment. I’ll likely watch this, but won’t buy it, I’ve pretty much given up on Family Guy now anyway.

    • Crap! The link didn’t work. I’ll try again…

      • Link still doesn’t work foopher, likely a security thing done by this site to prevent malicious links.

        • Actually, we allow links (within reason). I don’t know why that one isn’t working.

          • Well darn it!

Anyway, it was a picture of the Family Guy characters as Jurassic Park characters. The link takes you to google for some reason so if you want to see the pic just click the link, click images, and type in “family guy jurassic park”

  9. I don’t care what the haters say. I love family guy and I actually find their star wars spoofs funny. I’m really looking forward to this.

  10. i liked blue harvest but never saw something something something darkside

    • Gasp! SSSDS is way funnier than Blue Harvest IMO

  11. hmmm gonna see it

  12. I liked Blue Harvest, I own Something Something Darkside, and will probably buy Its a Trap! I have a thing for parodies, no matter how ridiculous they may seem.

  13. The 1st trailer seems like a recreation of the original trailer for Return of the Jedi

    • Very good… :)

  14. I’m glad to hear that they’re not going to do episodes 1-3 (even though they could probably be hilarious)

    • I wouldn’t be so sure about that, I did hear they planned to do all six originally, maybe saying it’s the last one is a gag because Lucas said ROTJ was the last film?….

I’d like to see Indiana Jones done next though.

  15. I have a feeling that people who “hate” family guy are just trying to be cool and different.

Unlike Simpsons, Family guy has remained constantly funny for its whole tenure (including the 2 movies) and as the author pointed out, I dont find the humor particularly low brow at all. Quite the contrary, I think it is of a very high standard and often quite intelligent

Anyway Im excited for the 3rd star wars film, despite not being a big fan of the original star wars trilogy

    • If that were the case, I’d have started hating it years ago way back when it as “cool” to hate Family Guy.

And frankly, I don’t hate the show, I just don’t think it’s as funny as it once was, much like the Simpsons, so I stopped watching.

  16. What’s better than watching a classic movie that everyone loves and remembers fondly? Watching a half-assed animated version with Family Guy characters, that’s what.
I’m sure there’s a specific audience out there who STILL thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world when Peter farts, but anyone can pull stupid jokes out of their ass when they already have a script that they didn’t even have to alter in anyway.
I could just imagine a meeting with these people “brainstorming”.

“Okay…we take the plot to Star Wars…”
“Is that the one with Data?”
“No, that’s Battlestar Galactica. Star Wars is the one with the walking garbage can.”
“Oh yeah, I remember that. I saw the trailer on youtube.”
“Anyway, we use the original script, but make obvious changes to names of characters and places to make it seem like we are actually clever and witty!”
“Oh, that is the best idea you’ve had since we ran out of ideas last month and you used an Agatha Christie novel! Boy, there sure are a lot of 14 year old kids claiming they LOVE that kind of stuff and have always known about it now.”
“Okay, so we make Luke Skywalker live on the planet TITooine, and instead of two suns, there’s a big pair of TITS in the sky!”
    “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Lady parts are funny!!!!”

    • Family guy humor is actually quite intelligent and witty. Perhaps you’re thinking of every will ferrel/adam sandler/rob schnieder movie ever made? now they is the definition of low brow toilet humor
