The cast of Falling Skies TNT Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

Although it teased the possibility of a strong and cohesive human resistance in the ruined city of Charleston, the real reveal during season 2 of TNT’s Falling Skies came in the last few minutes of the season finale. From the true purpose of the invader’s secret weapon, to Hal becoming an unwitting pawn in the alien’s battle with the human resistance, and, of course, the big twist of a mysterious new species of extraterrestrial – whose motivations and allegiances could spell doom or salvation for the human race – ‘A More Perfect Union‘ was all about surprises.

Now, with production on season 3 already underway, EW spoke with the series’ executive producer Remi Aubuchon on what fans can expect out of Falling Skies season 3.

The New Aliens

New Alien Falling Skies A More Perfect Union Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

‘A More Perfect Union’ began planting the seeds that something else was en route to earth when Ben (Connor Jessup) casually mentioned that the weapon the overlords had devised was not intended for humans. According to Aubuchon, the correlation there is that by destroying the skyward-facing weapon, the 2nd Mass essentially paved the way for the new aliens to make their presence known.

Aubuchon stated:

“Well, it seems to be a big coincidence that they took down this huge weapon, and all of the sudden these guys landed. So I would say that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that there must be some kind of connection between the two of them.”

Now the question becomes: What exactly did the 2nd Mass leave the door open for? With the skitter rebellion facing a major setback following the death of Red Eye, some outside help would likely be a pretty welcome sight. Additionally, if these (hopefully helpful) aliens are familiar with the overlords and their skitters, perhaps humanity will be getting some much needed intel on the still somewhat mysterious enemy.

“One of the things that I hope the fans will see is that of course this is an alien that doesn’t look anything like the aliens we’ve been confronted with since the beginning of the series. And in fact there’s a certain benign-ness. It’s uncertain as to whether or not he’s friendly or unfriendly, but the one thing that we can definitely determine is he kind of looks a little like us in a way. His eyes do not seem as shark eye-like as the overlords’ eyes did or even the skitters, who have a frightening look to them. So I’m hoping that some of the speculation will be “Wow, this is not only a game changer, this could be a game changer for the good.” And then that begs the question of “is it too good to be true?” I’m hoping that there’s a lot of questions running around the blogosphere and the Internet world because I think that that’s certainly what we had intended.”

Hal Controlled By Overlords?

Drew Roy Falling Skies A More Perfect Union1 Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

After a brief and apparently exhausting encounter with his old flame Karen (Jessy Schram), during the siege on the overlord’s weapon, Hal (Drew Roy) was rendered unconscious and thought to have suffered some sort of injury during the skirmish. When Hal awoke, however, it became immediately apparent that whatever had been done to him may be far more injurious to those in Hal’s company than to the young man himself.

So why choose Hal? Well, according to Aubuchon, there’s still enough of human Karen left to make bugging her ex-boyfriend part of a ploy in getting him back, while simultaneously striking a blow against the resistance.

“…The main thing that we were discussing in the writers room, and this is an idea that we had right at the beginning of the season, so it was very hard for us to keep holding back on it until the last episode of the season, is there’s this weird love triangle going on between Maggie, Hal and Karen. And in a weird way, we made it as subtle as we could, but Karen wants him back, and there’s nothing worse than an old girlfriend scorned, and so what did she do to him in order to make sure that a wedge was driven between Maggie and Hal? And since she’s sort of now a minion of the overlords, she has the power to do something really nasty, and I think that’s fun, and it should be fun in the third season too.”

The Creepier Aliens of Season 2

Noah Wyle Falling Skies TNT Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

Along with the goal of reaching Charleston, season 2 also introduced a bunch of new and creepy ways the aliens can attack and potentially control the human resistance. The parasite in Tom’s (Noah Wyle) eye set the season on the right foot, and things just got worse from there with the harness factory and the spider-like aliens that killed poor Jamil. To hear Aubuchon tell it, that’s part of the challenge he loves taking on with Falling Skies.

“As you probably know, Steven Spielberg loves the show and is very involved in it…we had one discussion about The Tingler, which is an old ’50s horror movie about this thing that would creep around and suddenly attach onto you and stuff. A lot of the harness factory came out of that discussion. And one day we were trying to think of how to come up with a clever way that we’ve never seen before that the aliens have somehow implanted something in Tom, and I think it was [producer] David Weddle one day sent us all a link of these parasite eye worm things in Brazil or whatever. I watched it and jumped out of my seat when I saw that, and I said, “OK, we’re doing that.” And the crawlies, well, that was a combination of everything. Steven said, “I want to see if there’s small aliens. Can’t we do small aliens?” And we started popping ideas back and forth and the writers and me and everybody. Then of course you get artists like Aaron Sims involved in the design of all that. It’s pretty amazing.”

Chances are, season 3 will play host to a whole bevy of new alien creepy crawlies that will plague the 2nd Mass, and maybe more. Who knows, perhaps the aliens that introduced themselves so dramatically at the end of the season will have some disturbing minions of their own to better serve whatever goal they have in mind.

New aliens, twisted love triangles and the high probability of more weird parasites and bug-like creatures to give everyone the willies; Falling Skies season 3 will likely have something for everyone when it kicks off next year.

Falling Skies season 3 will premiere next summer on TNT.

  1. Great show, nice to see its tangled and that there’s a real life perspective … i.e., these people are NOT a military outfit, yet they come together as one.

There’s a bit too much drama/development sometimes … not enough action/strategy IMO. It is hard to watch and realize they don’t think like a sci-fi person would, part of the dynamics of the show though that makes it more interesting … they’re just ordinary people trying to stay alive!

Also, it’s a nice commentary on government and citizens … they launch consistant attacks (taxation) with superior firepower (laws/police/army) and you try to fight back but just keep getting picked off one by one until they have total control.

  2. Here’s my take… the new aliens obviously have some history with the skitters and overlords. So what is that history?

    -Competitors for galactic resources ?
-Protectors of interstellar species ravaged by the overlords?
-Possibly worse than the overlords as to pursuing the elimination of ‘bothersome’ humans? (The main overlord said something to the effect of “if it was an extermination, it would have already been done”)?
-If they are human benefactors, how powerful or effective are they against the overlords? (or how interested are they in protecting us vs pillaging the earth for resources as the overlords appear to be?)

Dunno… but something tells me the season 3 premiere will pick up with the finale scene and the new alien is gonna walk right up to the crowd and bite someone’s head off and suck out all the blood. New problems not help. As if the overlords, while far from friendly, were trying to make the earth an unattractive target for these intergalactic raiders.

  3. g****** it! I don’t think I can wait six months for season three! My dad put this on for me hoping to scare me, and instead I fell inlove. This, and The Walking Dead, are probably the only series’ I can watch reruns of, and still freak out when s*** get’s real! God, These next few months better pass by quiickly, for gods’ sake!

    • Same story here I think though that the new aliens are good because remember when the red eyed skitter told of another planet and how they were harnessed so i think the new aliens are nice

    • Didn’t win revolutionary war without allies (France).

  4. just watched season 2 and I think that the new alien race that has landed are actually real skitters.

we know that the harnasses are the overlords design and that the skitters also have the harnesses inside of them. we also know the harnesses slowly change the appearance of anyone who has it attached to them. (ben’s skin slowly changing, the little girl and her brother.) the same could be for the skitters. their appearance could be drasticly different from what the look like now on the show with the harnasses in place.
they also have probably been enslaved way before the events of the show even begun and thus having had a complete transformation. and remember that the overlords are only interested in harnessing children.

so my theory is that the harnessed skitters are actually children of this newly entered alien race. and are altered through the harnesses.

as for the extra limbs they could be a childrens thing like human kids losing their babytheeth after a couple of years. or more likely an effect of the harnesses.

    • Nope, the producers have already stated that the skitters have always had eight legs. These new aliens are not at all related to the skitters.

I think that they’re what the overlords are at war with, and the overlords just used earth as an outpost to set up their gun thing.

But honestly, I don’t see what all the fuss is about with the new aliens. It’s obvious they aren’t there to wipe out the humans. I think the Hal dilemma is far more interesting, I can’t wait to see Tom’s reaction when he finds out!!!! Although those damn writers probably have the reveal at the end of the season finale….. DX

    • I agree with you. That’s exactly what I was thinking. The face of the new alien has some resemblance to the skitters’ faces. That would explain why the skitters were interested in the new weapon. It was not to kill humans as Ben said. It was to kill these aliens that may be in war with the overlords after they harnessed their kids and almost destroyed them all. Fortunately their technology is advance enough to pose a threat. Maybe there is also some additional reasons that may these 2 powerful aliens enemies but we still do not know. Humans seems to be in the middle an annoyance for the overlords and earth was just an strategic battlefield for them

    • Actually, the skitters harnesses were put on/in them when they were children and they have lived this way for at least 100 years, according to what one of the skitters said previously.

  5. ow and I also think it would be cool if the overlords and skitters are in some intergalactic feud and the skitters on earth are perhaps children and/ or prisoners of war forced to do their bidding.

and for the overlords coming to earth being just a strategic move
to get resources for their war.
or perhaps even use earth and other nearby planets as a defensive perimeter against the skitters. (and so they are building all these space aimed guns around the world.)

thus they don’t necisarily need to wipe us out entirly. just kill enough make peace with rest put them in a “camp” so we won’t be a problem while they mine our resources. and after the war they leave and we can build our population and restore our earth again.

  6. Aliens vs Overlord war been raging in the galactic skys for years. Humans are just pawns used to spawn/build a controlled army to fight in there war.

  7. The eye worm was put into Hal with a kiss. Karen will control him that way.

    • the overload is now inside Hal,, he just used the opportunity to his advantage to get inside.

  8. Why do you make us wait so long between seasons???!!?!?!?!?!?

  9. I didn’t like the creepy crawlers/bug things.

  10. has anyone noticed that this show is very similar to the video game resistence for example the harnessing chambers are similar to the chimera conversion centers, they both star in a post apocalyptic alien invasion background, the giant guns are like the tower guns in Rotterdam and the deharnessed kids are like sentinals but the show is becoming more unique now due to the arrival of the new aliens

    • I was thinking the same thing! I was a huge fan of the resistance series, and definitely can see several similarities.

  11. Just wanna find out when the season 3 of falling skies will be out

    • june 9

  12. Just want to find out when the season 3 of falling skies will be out

  13. quando sai a 3 temporada por favor respondão

  14. when does season 3 come on? love the show i cant wait for the next episode:)

  15. when does season 3 come on? love the show i cant wait for the next episode:)!!!!

  16. i have two theorys 1 that the skitters and the new race are in a intergalactic war and the new race wants to have an alligence or 2 the new “skitters” have come to punish the overloards for taking so long in the process of building their huge cannon

  17. In the first season, as Mason mentioned once again American revolution, Pope said something to the effect that they are more like Indians fighting a lost cause against white men coming from Europe each year in greater numbers.
The new alien species at the end of season 2 made me think of the following allegory: The earth is like a pacific island. One day the Japanese come not to kill everybody and destroy, but to build a military base and airstrips in their fight with the American. But they nevertheless kill and don’t care about the sorry existence of the islanders. And then one day their foe comes and they go on fighting their bloody war. The earth is just a strategic island in the galactic/pacific war…

  18. When you said releases next summer is that in Australia or America being here in Australia its all ready summer you can release it now lol

  19. I’m curious to know if I missed something over the course of season 2. Earlier in season 2 the 2nd Mass came across a courtyard or parking lot or something that had dead skitters and destroyed Mechs everywhere. The 2nd Mass didn’t do it and there were no other militia in the area so did that ever get explained? I don’t recall if it did or not and I’ve seen every episode. So, if it hasn’t been explained then maybe this new species did it which would indicate they are friendly. I believe they will become allies but will ultimately have their own agenda as well.
I know you’re probably thinking they couldn’t have done it because of the weapon but after thinking a little more about it, its really not all that different from what we do now. Maybe the weapon would keep the others at bay en mass but the new species could have slipped a small group through to conduct guerrilla warfare, i.e. special forces like their version of Navy SEALs, or Green Berets. I say that because the first time we see them landing is after the weapon was destroyed allowing them to do so.
    I don’t know, just a thought.

    • I think as they were walking among the dead skitters and mechs, Mason or someone, maybe it was Pope said they killed each other. That they were shot with mech ammo or something to that effect…If I knew which episode it was specifically, I could watch it again on my Kindle…

      • I thought it was the Skitter resistance that did it, but with the new aliens landing, maybe there was a scout party that did it.

    • It was actually stated by the red eyes leader of the rebellion I believe. In the 5th episode of the Second season. Rick leads the group to Ben and the red eyed Skitter. They take him custody and he tells Tom of the Rebellion and somewhere along the line during their conversation he says 20 of my fallen friends in this mornings battle(or something like that) wasn’t good enough to convince you of the rebellion. This tells me that they just opened fire upon each other like the team who surveyed the area after that battle had thought. So I believe that that fight was just the skitters against each other using the mechs but I could be wrong.

    • Well actually, I think you missed something. During one of the first encounters between Red Eye and Tom, Red Eye makes a comment regarding the dead mechs and skitters, that it was proof of their internal war. If I am wrong, someone correct me but I am quite sure.

  20. I love the show… Noah Wiley is amazing! I do hope you will keep the balance on the winning side; otherwise it’s just too stressful. We’ll see what happens.

    • I actually think that’s a good idea…well until the point of The Walking Dead thing. But you really brought up something that I’ve been wondering about myself. Great minds think a like I guess!

  21. Uhm, about the wormlike alien, isn’t it pretty suspicious that it is pretty much the same as the parasite from Prometheus? Just sayin’

Anyways, I’m really excited about season 3. A hell of a lot more excited than season 2 or even season 1 because the new alien offers a deeper storyline about the aliens and to the resistence.

    Have a good one,

  22. I just got through watching both seasons 1 & 2 in a 3 day setting. Then I found out that season 3 isn’t available yet.

I will wait patiently for the arrival of FS3!

  23. Excellent show. I can’t wait for the next season.

  24. Love the show!! Finally Hal when get some spotlight! I like every character in her or his own way, but in season 2 Ben was so irritating! I hope Hal gets to be “infected” by the bug for a time before TOM (i rally hope it´s dad that find out ;)) notice that Hal is acting weird :)

  25. I really liked this show, the premise, etc was very appealing. TNT, are you listening (rather… reading)? 10 episodes? Really? You still seem to be stuck in the Pilot mode, it’s a success… get it? It’s good! Now run it!

You have a potential huge hit, yet even with 10 episodes, we’re still filled with fluff, come on…

I guess this is the new generation of writers, those that can’t carry a series for 24-26 episodes, and still have trouble filling 10.

Series no longer ‘have-to’ start in the fall, summer fill-ins, etc., they can start any time, run any distance, and end any time. Run this until December, I’d bet you would still out-rate most network shows.. no doubt.

Summary, give us more and stop cheaping out!!!

  26. I read on GateWorld site that falling skies will return on sunday june 9th (9/8c) for 2 hour premiere and then will be shown 10/9c following weeks. Just hoping we wont have to wait to much longer in the u.k.

  27. Just watched the season 3 trailer, Scorched Earth, and Pope appears to be crying over a woman who is either hurt or dead. Looks a lot like Maggie. Maggie adds a lot to the show, it would be a huge loss if they write her out.
