The cast of Falling Skies TNT Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

Although it teased the possibility of a strong and cohesive human resistance in the ruined city of Charleston, the real reveal during season 2 of TNT’s Falling Skies came in the last few minutes of the season finale. From the true purpose of the invader’s secret weapon, to Hal becoming an unwitting pawn in the alien’s battle with the human resistance, and, of course, the big twist of a mysterious new species of extraterrestrial – whose motivations and allegiances could spell doom or salvation for the human race – ‘A More Perfect Union‘ was all about surprises.

Now, with production on season 3 already underway, EW spoke with the series’ executive producer Remi Aubuchon on what fans can expect out of Falling Skies season 3.

The New Aliens

New Alien Falling Skies A More Perfect Union Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

‘A More Perfect Union’ began planting the seeds that something else was en route to earth when Ben (Connor Jessup) casually mentioned that the weapon the overlords had devised was not intended for humans. According to Aubuchon, the correlation there is that by destroying the skyward-facing weapon, the 2nd Mass essentially paved the way for the new aliens to make their presence known.

Aubuchon stated:

“Well, it seems to be a big coincidence that they took down this huge weapon, and all of the sudden these guys landed. So I would say that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that there must be some kind of connection between the two of them.”

Now the question becomes: What exactly did the 2nd Mass leave the door open for? With the skitter rebellion facing a major setback following the death of Red Eye, some outside help would likely be a pretty welcome sight. Additionally, if these (hopefully helpful) aliens are familiar with the overlords and their skitters, perhaps humanity will be getting some much needed intel on the still somewhat mysterious enemy.

“One of the things that I hope the fans will see is that of course this is an alien that doesn’t look anything like the aliens we’ve been confronted with since the beginning of the series. And in fact there’s a certain benign-ness. It’s uncertain as to whether or not he’s friendly or unfriendly, but the one thing that we can definitely determine is he kind of looks a little like us in a way. His eyes do not seem as shark eye-like as the overlords’ eyes did or even the skitters, who have a frightening look to them. So I’m hoping that some of the speculation will be “Wow, this is not only a game changer, this could be a game changer for the good.” And then that begs the question of “is it too good to be true?” I’m hoping that there’s a lot of questions running around the blogosphere and the Internet world because I think that that’s certainly what we had intended.”

Hal Controlled By Overlords?

Drew Roy Falling Skies A More Perfect Union1 Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

After a brief and apparently exhausting encounter with his old flame Karen (Jessy Schram), during the siege on the overlord’s weapon, Hal (Drew Roy) was rendered unconscious and thought to have suffered some sort of injury during the skirmish. When Hal awoke, however, it became immediately apparent that whatever had been done to him may be far more injurious to those in Hal’s company than to the young man himself.

So why choose Hal? Well, according to Aubuchon, there’s still enough of human Karen left to make bugging her ex-boyfriend part of a ploy in getting him back, while simultaneously striking a blow against the resistance.

“…The main thing that we were discussing in the writers room, and this is an idea that we had right at the beginning of the season, so it was very hard for us to keep holding back on it until the last episode of the season, is there’s this weird love triangle going on between Maggie, Hal and Karen. And in a weird way, we made it as subtle as we could, but Karen wants him back, and there’s nothing worse than an old girlfriend scorned, and so what did she do to him in order to make sure that a wedge was driven between Maggie and Hal? And since she’s sort of now a minion of the overlords, she has the power to do something really nasty, and I think that’s fun, and it should be fun in the third season too.”

The Creepier Aliens of Season 2

Noah Wyle Falling Skies TNT Falling Skies Season 3 Details Revealed

Along with the goal of reaching Charleston, season 2 also introduced a bunch of new and creepy ways the aliens can attack and potentially control the human resistance. The parasite in Tom’s (Noah Wyle) eye set the season on the right foot, and things just got worse from there with the harness factory and the spider-like aliens that killed poor Jamil. To hear Aubuchon tell it, that’s part of the challenge he loves taking on with Falling Skies.

“As you probably know, Steven Spielberg loves the show and is very involved in it…we had one discussion about The Tingler, which is an old ’50s horror movie about this thing that would creep around and suddenly attach onto you and stuff. A lot of the harness factory came out of that discussion. And one day we were trying to think of how to come up with a clever way that we’ve never seen before that the aliens have somehow implanted something in Tom, and I think it was [producer] David Weddle one day sent us all a link of these parasite eye worm things in Brazil or whatever. I watched it and jumped out of my seat when I saw that, and I said, “OK, we’re doing that.” And the crawlies, well, that was a combination of everything. Steven said, “I want to see if there’s small aliens. Can’t we do small aliens?” And we started popping ideas back and forth and the writers and me and everybody. Then of course you get artists like Aaron Sims involved in the design of all that. It’s pretty amazing.”

Chances are, season 3 will play host to a whole bevy of new alien creepy crawlies that will plague the 2nd Mass, and maybe more. Who knows, perhaps the aliens that introduced themselves so dramatically at the end of the season will have some disturbing minions of their own to better serve whatever goal they have in mind.

New aliens, twisted love triangles and the high probability of more weird parasites and bug-like creatures to give everyone the willies; Falling Skies season 3 will likely have something for everyone when it kicks off next year.

  1. People give this show a lot of crap, but I really enjoy it. Reminds me of the old Sci-fi channel days where they played shows like First Wave and Invisible Man.

    • seriously, I really enjoy and thinks its a terrific show, people need to chill

    • Absolutely fantastic finale to season 2 – next summer is too long for season 3!!!

    • Well, it does beat porn by quite a wee.
      Love it.

  2. We have enjoyed it. It has its no so great moments, true – but overall we have enjoyed it.

  3. Ahhhhhh gotta wait an effing year!! Dang you TNT. But love the show and any detractors can take a walk.

  4. I really like this show as well. I’m glad that it got renewed so early in the season. That way I could enjoy the finale without worrying about whether this will be the last of Falling Skies and if we were going to have an open ending for the whole show.

  5. We like the show, as well, but I’m wondering about the third race of aliens entering the picture. Unless something is going to happen–fast–to one of the other alien races, that’s a lot of balls to juggle for the writers.

The only creature I trust with puppy-dog eyes is…a puppy. Beware the newbie creatures, methinks!

    • they are the adult form skitters i think. they are good and there for the risitance.

      • Now there is an interesting line of thought.

  6. I love this show, and although it had a couple of slow episodes I am looking forward to seeing what happens in Season 3!

  7. I’m not it’s biggest fan but I still enjoy and admire what they’re doing.

  8. To those hating on the waiting period of 6 months, not a year. I remind you there is a very popular show coming back to life, so to speak. The walking dead is coming back very soon and plays Sunday nights, just like falling skies. It returns October 14th. By the time the walking dead is about done, falling skies will start up once again. I absolutely hate TV my entire adult life, but shows like the walking dead and falling skies, are the only reason I ever watch it.

    • @Ben C

I agree. You look at it and think wow, that’s a long time but then you see shows like The Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire coming here soon then followed by shows like GOT and Spartacus. By the time those shows end it’s right back to Falling Skies. Also we have a show in Revolution coming up next month too. Everything I am hearing about the show is sounding great and it’s by the Lost creators so that’s even better.
Soo, back to Falling Skies…I loved the way they created the uh, armor I guess for the new Alien. That looked awesome

  9. I wish it was an action drama more than a drama action show but I still kinda like it.

  10. I like this show. The only thing I didn’t like of the last episode was the escape of Karen. That way of crawling in the walls was very ridiculous…

  11. I wonder if the aliens will APPEAR to be an ally until the overlords are done in, then take over themselves. New enemy!

  12. One problem I have with the show is that you have all these people living in a survival mode having to scrounge for food and water and basically live in a primitive state, yet they all have nice clean hair (Except Pope…He looks pretty realistic), really white teeth, and other than an occasional dirt smudge they look clean….I look much rougher after a few days tent camping then these people living day to day in a primitive mode…

  13. This show has been absolutely the most enjoyable one for my daughter and I in the last 10 years!
Very well done and the characters are more ‘real to life’ than I’ve seen in a while on a series.
    Thank You very much!! :)

  14. I just got off the road and tried to watch the last two episodes, but unfortunately the second to the last got cut short because some Dish interferrence…….I have a question…..Did they ever mention where their poser source was coming from? They had way too much power to have to rely on generators that need fuel….At least for very long I’d think

  15. Whatever purpose these new aliens have one thing remains clear, the humans that are still alive survive only because the aliens didn’t want to be bothered. At no point have the humans appeared to be a real threat, nor have they really been all that adept at hiding. Considering these new aliens touched down right at the doorstep of Charleston, and everyone ran out ready to fight, if either race of alien really wants to finish the people depicted in the show off it does not look like it will be a problem.

    • @Slayer I think that that particular alien landing there was a coincidence, It seemed hundreds if not thousands of those pods landed all over the place.

All in all I feel that that little parasite thats inside Hal is actually the REAL overlord, first we thought skitters were the enemey, then we find out they are simply harnessed beings, then Tom eaisly overpowers the Overlord? No, what happened was the real overlord (the parasite) escaped the body of his host, some innocent (but imposing looking) blue alien… then all of a sudden this poor creatures regains control of his body and is beat to death by Tom while his oppressor escapes to Hal.

      • @ kingkrikkit, send a link showing

“All in all I feel that that little parasite thats inside Hal is actually the REAL overlord, first we thought skitters were the enemey, then we find out they are simply harnessed beings, then Tom eaisly overpowers the Overlord? 16. Now that I have seen both seasons back to back for the first time, You drop this new alien Guy in front of me and end the show. You really know how to kick someone in the teeth, so get to writing and get beck on air with this. I for one feel as though this is one of those so-called preview of things to come leaks to the sub conditioning of the public. People need to wake up to the possibilities of things and quit just lazing around in life thinking nothing will ever happen.

    • It was pretty obvious how that new Alien was connected……The big question will be are they going to be friends against the same enemy or will these guys continue to eliminate humans if they get rid of the other guys. My question is how did all those supposedly single occupied space craft make so much force while landing to cause a near earthquake condition?

  17. And don’t forget this Saturday Dr. Who is back!!

  18. I think hat this show needs to o something about the waiting period between seasons

  19. seeing the second mass is in Sc they should include the S.C STATE GUARD into the storyline somehow

  20. i LOVE THE SHOW but a whole year to wait come on! They should of at least told us wether the new alien is friendly or not did anyone notice when it saw the humans it did a sort of alien smile hmmm sure is going to be interesting season 3 but a whole year i cant get over it arrrg

  21. this show is one of the best things to hit tv in a few years now, so cant wait till season 3 comes out

  22. I really love this show and can’t wait for season 3. I only wish it had 22 episodes instead of 10 per season.

    • I heard season 3 has the full 22 epis but maybe just a rumour – fingers crossed! =)

  23. im from the uk and i absolutely love the show, i missed the very ist episode so it took me a few episodes to get into wat was happening, now i love it, and as soon as one finishes i cant wait for the next one, of cause the show will have haters but come on who does like everything thats on tv. but u have got to give credit were credits due, this type of show just keeps you wanting more and wondering wats gonna happen next…i really hope that it doesnt get cancelled like a lot of american shows do, id be gutted lol. massive well done to the show

  24. We love this show me & my family watch it each week my 9 yr old son is obsessed with it !! . Great ending looking forward to the next chapter

  25. We love this show me & my family watch it each week my 9 yr old son is obsessed with it !! . Great ending looking forward to the next chapter Hopefully it will last longer than 10 weeks x

  26. OMG i Love’d Season 2 :P
I think these “new alliens” are here too help (well! i hope lol), theres soooo many thoughts going thru my mind like , Perhaps these “new alliens” are here too kill the overlords? or maybe there here to destroy earth it’s self ?(lol) , i cant help but wonder if they are enemy’s ,Tom , Weaver and everyone standing behind them both are all “dead” (Sigh).
Im pretty sure if they wer enemies they wouldnt hesitate to strike at a blink of n eye, Dont you think? then all the main characters are pretty much CUSTARD and BOOM! falling skies is History (LOL). but i guess Season 3 will answer that for me :). hmmmmm! i seem to think they have a history with the Skitters&Overlords stretching back many many century’s before our’s, and I tend to think its like a huge game of Cat n Mouse (lol), Happily lived in harmony and then all of a sudden one “FISH HEAD” wanted POWER and then from so on the Mouse’s (FISH HEAD’s) have been skipping from planet to planet destroying every little thing that comes in there way and the “Cat’s” (new alliens) are trying to catch them but the “Mouse’s” are always JUST a step ahead, But! heeeey thats my theory :) haha! i SO cant wait for Season 3..
By the way Ben is SO HOT! hahahah
    :)

  27. My wife, kid and i just love falling skies, cant wait for s3.Do u guys not wanna continue with V s3 where those wonderful guys canceled it.

  28. Love this show. Can’t possibly wait until next summer. We started during the second season and then bought the first season and watched it all in a few days. Does anyone know when season 2 will be out on DVD?

  29. Quoting: “…and I think it was [producer] David Weddle one day sent us all a link of these parasite eye worm things in Brazil or whatever.”

C’mom. That was not in Brazil. Leave us in peace. That eye in the worm thing was in India.

    Go figure!

    • OPS! I meant “worm in the eye”, not the other way.
