With only four episodes under its belt, TNT’s hit sci-fi drama Falling Skies has been picked up for a second season (10 episodes), which is set to air in the summer of 2012.

In its series premiere, the Steven Spielberg-produced series drew an extremely impressive Live +7 audience of 8 million viewers – with 3.8 million falling within the ever-favored 18-49 demographic. This number, while extreme impressive for TNT, also served to unseat USA’s continual ratings high for series premieres, as Falling Skies became the highest-rated new series on cable this year.

Proving that Falling Skies is not just a ratings winner in the United States, the freshman series – which follows Boston history professor Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) through the aftermath of worldwide alien invasion – has already been picked up in 75 additional television markets around the world and, in some instance, is garnering record ratings internationally, as well.

Says Michael Write, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies:

Falling Skies is a true standout series, from its ambitious storytelling, high-profile cast and production team to its phenomenal success when it comes to international and time-shifted viewing. We’re reaching new audiences with Falling Skies and look forward to seeing where this fascinating and exciting series takes us next.”

With Falling Skies instantly resonating with sci-fi fans, no longer will viewers who are looking for their next sci-fi fix have to wait for FOX or Syfy to present their newest endeavor (ones that are generally canceled rather quickly), as TNT has proven that great writing and a clear vision can transcend any network stereotypes for audience expectations.

On top of the success that Falling Skies brings to TNT, the fact that the first of two Steven Spielberg television projects set to air this year has been so well received certainly shines a positive light on Spielberg’s upcoming prehistoric series, Terra Nova, which is set to premiere on FOX.

Can the proverbial lightning of television success strike twice for Steven Spielberg?  If there anyone that could do it, it’ll certainly be him.

Since Falling Skies will be at Comic-Con 2011, make sure to keep an eye on Screen Rant, as we’ll be bringing you live coverage of the panels, and interviews with your favorite stars, over on our Official Comic-Con Coverage Page.

Falling Skies airs Sundays @10pm on TNT

  1. Love this show glad to see second season already picked up. It’s sad how rare it is these days to enjoy a show and have it actually get picked up.

    • Daniel, I also love the show, not sure why it has been getting flack by some of the SR readers. Hows fatherhood treating you these days dude?

      • Yea it started slow, but good and has gotten better each week. By episode 4 IMO it’s easily become very good.

Fatherhood is good. She’s just a little over 6 months now and doing well. She’s teething though and it breaks my heart to see her crying in so much pain. I take it back fatherhood sucks lol jK.

  2. “no longer will viewers who are looking for their next sci-fi fix have to wait for FOX or Syfy to present their newest endeavor (ones that are generally canceled rather quickly)-”

No $#!%. I’m still fuming at how many of the shows I watched were cancelled within this last year. I think the number almost reached double digits. Nice to see at least one network show a little commitment to a new series.

    • Agree wholeheartedly! It’s tough to let yourself get into new shows anymore when you feel as though they are bound to be cancelled quickly. Look at the struggle Chuck has had every year scraping by for each half-season. It’s impossible to get a proper story arc when you fear cancellation after every 13 episodes.

  3. I LOVE FALLING SKIES. I ordered Super Channel in Canada just to watch it. So glad it’s coming up with a second season. As for Steven Speilberg (MEDIA GOD! LOVE HIM), his money went into it, not really his creation. Terra Nova would’t be TV gold striking twice for him. He produced ER, Dawson’s Creek, and that army one with Tom Hanks. I’m sure Amblin Productions has even more under its belt that I don’t know of.

    • Band of Brother.

  4. Horrible, cheesy, poorly written show. How the hell did this get renewed is beyond me.

    • I 100% agree with you. This pale character-show is that stupid I’m surprised it isn’t canceled yet. Perhaps the name Spielberg is like a protecting name for the project. I hope it will get better soon. Less talk… more tension, suspense and excitement! Better stories and and very important… more believable characters.

      • Good thing you aren’t a writer. Less talk, but more believable characters. Hmmm… Wonder how you develop characters when you don’t have them talk and they just have action and suspense all the time. In case you’re wondering, real people wouldn’t last very long in that situation because the body would start to break down. Even in real war there is a lot of down time in between short bursts of action. Plus, it helps develop real and in depth characters when they actually speak to one another.

  5. I can’t wait till we actually get to see the inside of some alien ships or something. There are so many unanswered questions and at least with a second season we might actually have the time to get into some of the answers. I just hope they don’t do a Lost on us where we wait for too many seasons to finally get a clue as to what’s going on.

  6. I really haven’t enjoyed this show so far but I keep watching in the hopes that it will get better as they expand the story.

  7. The last episode redeemed this show.

  8. Falling Skies might not exactly be the best thing on television right now but I’m glad that it’s not getting the early axe as well.

  9. Blah characters, horrible cringe worthy special effects, and yawn inducing episodes…this series has nothing going for it except for maybe Moon Bloodgood. The alien’s seem to be tacky homages to the 1980′s iconic movie monsters and robots ( ED-209 and Brundlefly) and have cheap stop motion type movement. The strained attempts at making that Pope character into a dangerous, unpredictiable bad ass is laughable, he’s as cool and dangerous as Arthur Fonzarelli and the Noah Wyle character’s hoe-hum attitude about his son being held by the aliens is just lazy writing and uninspired acting, there’s no sense of emotional strain or urgency in his characters plight.

    • Lol at all the generic criticisms. I would like to see some actual examples for them other than your opinionated trash. This is Steven Spielberg, so to all of those complaining about how the aliens are, or how they look; you’re stupid. Your ignorance about his type of style is blatant. The acting isn’t even that bad, there are numerous shows on television that have worse acting. Also, this show is catering to a wider audience and not to some miniscule fan base obsessed with the SyFy (that network is trash now) channel, or any of the out-dated Eureka/Battle Star Galatica shows. Don’t like it? Too bad. While you cry and moan Falling Skies is putting up big numbers. It’s not like they need your viewership anyway.

  10. Firefly and Falling Skies are the 2 best sci fi (not syfy) tv shows

  11. I miss Fire Fly….

  12. One of the things that irks me about Falling Skies (beyond the fact that it’s execrably written) is its pompousness. Shows on the SyFy (I hate that name) channel such as Eureka and Warehouse 13 don’t take themselves too seriously and just ask the viewer to come along for the ride.
Also watched the premiere of Alphas last night. The producers of Falling Skies should study it diligently. They might learn how a sci-fi production should be written.
P.S. I can’t believe FS has already been renewed.

    • I don’t find it pompous at all.

I don’t think it should study any other shows. Every show should be it’s own show. It deserves to be it’s own unique style. Some shows should take them selves serious. I’m sick of scifi shows that act as if their concept is a big joke. Eureka is fun, but it’s overly light heartedness and lack of ability to be serious make it nothing more than just a fun show and it’s why it will never be a truly great show. Falling Skies may not make you laugh as much but IMO it’s better.

  13. This show was RENEWED! Heck I barely noticed it was even ON tv…

  14. Awesome that it’s already got picked up, makes me feel good with having gotten into it and sticking with it. After V and The Event, I’m happy Falling Skies is a alien invasion show that gets it right.

  15. I like the show but as far as survival sci fi/ horror shows go its got nothing on The Walking Dead.

  16. That last episode might be one of the worst single episodes of a TV show I’ve ever seen.
It was painful to watch to be honest.
The acting of all those child actors is so poor that I almost feel bad for the actors that they’re so exposed to the public eye.
Every story arc feels forced and every twist is predictable.
Adding a new character who wants to take only the children to safety, nothing weird about that …
All those cheesy soap opera like scenes with the atrocious soundtrack in the background makes it almost unbearable to watch.
After 6 episode I don’t feel any connection to any of those characters, I almost feel like rooting for the alias already.

I really don’t know how you can renew such a show.

  17. How can you even remotely compare Firefly and Falling Skies.

Firefly was a master piece with a masterful cast and a very unique atmosphere.

Falling Skies is atrocious. The acting is poor and the writing is more than poor.

  18. Get rid of the kids, add more action, and step it up on the suspense. Civilians need to become fighters, after all THE WHOLE WORLD JUST GOT ROCKED, NO ONE IS A CIVILIAN ANYMORE. I give it a C right now. Hoping it gets better, while watching every week.

    • I really want to like this show, and I’ve been very critical of it. And I remain so. The mystery of the aliens is the only thing it has going for it. The producers, writers and director obviously want to make their characters behave like characters in an old B Western where everyone gets their just desserts as long as it’s not too brutal or believable. That guy and his group who kidnapped kids for the aliens all would have been strung up and left to rot (at best) if the writers and producers cared anything about portraying credible human behavior. And I love the scene where the character Mike-in the middle of a fire fight!- takes a time out to have a touchy-feely farewell with his son before returning to battle. Please!

      • @William Bagwell

THANK YOU. I want to love this show. I love sci-fi. Alien invasion? Can’t go wrong.

Or can you? They catch up to the guys that tried to sell their kids into alien bondage and they’re like “What do we do with these guys?” Have these characters ever met any real humans in a real crisis situation? Here’s what we’re going to do with these guys. We’re going to line them up against a wall and shoot them. Period. We don’t ask them to please stop selling the HUMAN SPECIES down the river for fresh fruit. We kill them, and solve this problem. Like the teenage biotch that we let run screaming through the house to warn the flesh-dealers that Mike and Hal were getting away. In something approaching real life, that coozebag gets a rifle-butt in the face to make her mouth stop. WTF? Is this a war for survival of the species? Is the war rated PG by prior consent of both sides? Do these guerrillas think they are the cast of Survivor or something? This is not a reality TV show! You don’t get points for class or popularity. Tea Lady? Liability. One bullet, liability solved.

Oh, and the Doc just got around to doing an autopsy of an alien? Yeah, I might of thought of that a bit earlier. I mean, how could knowing about their physiology POSSIBLY help in fighting them? Let’s focus on Lamas class for the pregnant chick, there’s no alien invasion in progress or anything. Don’t trouble your pretty head about anything as complicated as figuring out how to kill the skitters that overran the planet.

Oh, and it takes frigging junkie Bob to discover what sort of awesome ordnance they shoot? I mean they have everything-piercing rounds, let’s make no effort to see what they are made of. Jesus. Christ.

These people all deserve a Darwin award. I want to root for the Humans, but I can’t. They don’t deserve to win.

  19. The shos is pretty average. I was so thankful for it, i simply love such shows but acting is mediocre and i cannot connect to characters. They are just so slow. Firefly was something totally different. Firefly is the show i miss the most.

  20. YEAH!! I love the show. I am glad there will be a season two!!!

  21. I love this show, Im glad it got a second season im not to happy tho its going to take ten months to air! it reminds me alot of lost which was one of the best sify shows every. (which had multiple seasons!)

    • Lost sucked & wasn’t true Sci Fi, it was pure fantasy no science. The first 2 seasons were a good start, but then lindeloff and the other one got too full of themselves and the show lost any grounding in reality or science and became total crap.

  22. “which is set to air in the summer of 2012″ Whaaat? C’mon I love this show I can’t wait so long. U gotta be kidding me

  23. WHAT?! youre gonna give me an awesome ending like that then make me wait till next summer?!?!?!? I cant wait that long!

  24. What an ending this season pity we have to wait until next summer for season 2 come on make it happen before that

  25. Love the show, probably “one” of the best sci-fi to come out in a while. I only wish TNT would push out season 2 sooner than the summer of 2012. Definitely too long of a wait.

  26. This got to be one of the best of the year 2011 for sci-fi, it combines reality with sci-fi, and the only thing that stand in there way of conquering the planet earth is the people of UNITED STATE OF AMERICA. is the combination of civilians and military working together as one. Please dont keep us waiting so looonngggg for season 2.

  27. I’m so glad to hear this show is doing well…I’m so sick of getting invested in fantastic shows like SGU and Firefly only to have them cancelled just when they’re getting started.

  28. Man I hate those Americans that think they’re the only good country in the whole world. You’re completely clueless about what happens in other countries. None the less, great series.
