UPDATE: This is not a photoshop job – Thomas Jane took it upon himself to get made up as the character because he’s a fan of the character, but there is nothing official about this picture. From Jane himself according to an update from Film School Rejects:

“Yeah, the pic is real all right – my pal Akiva Goldsman told me about the project and I fell in love with the idea right away. Being a huge fan of all things Hex – I just couldn’t help myself. I called up my buddy Chris Nelson and we spent a Saturday afternoon working up some make-up for this impromptu shoot and I fired a few pics off to Warners. How do people get a hold of this shit? It’s a little embarrassing seeing my fanboy enthusiasm spilled all over the web, but great scripts don’t come around too often, especially for characters I love.”

FilmSchoolRejects broke this image upon the internets saying that someone sent it to them stating it was Thomas Jane (from the last Punisher movie) as Jonah Hex. Word went out to the “Movie site guy network” looking for confirmation that this was accurate but details were scarce.

Well today comes confirmation from ShockTillYouDrop that the picture is indeed bogus. The managed to get in touch with Mark Neveldine, co-writer and director of the upcoming Warner Bros. film who said he had no idea where the image came from.

Now there is always a remote possibility that this is misdirection and that the image is indeed legit, but I doubt it. We’re not dealing with Michael Bay here.

Jonah Hex is a DC Comics character – a anti-hero-cowboy with a terribly scarred face who fought on the side of the Confederates during the Civil War. The film is being worked on, but its no further than the screenplay stage at this point and the star has not been cast yet. From what I hear Nathan Fillion (Serenity) is very interested in the role, but it remains to be seen who will end up wearing the latex and cowboy hat.

We’ve been accused from time to time of being a bit “slow” when it comes to reporting movie news. Sometimes it’s because we just can’t get to it, but a lot of the time it’s because we hold off to get at least some verification on a story. Posting every rumor that comes along only to have a large percentage of them debunked hurts our credibility and may also end up getting your panties in a bunch over something that’s not true to start with. (No slam against FSR intended!)

We don’t always get it right, but we do our best.

  1. Don’t be like me, take your own good council to heart. :)

Indeed, “Failure is its own demonstration.”

  2. Even though it’s fake, I think Jane would be perfect and hopeful will be considered for the role.

  3. Yeah, he does look good in that picture.

Gotta admit I don’t know anything about the source material.

  4. Another rumor going around is that its a make up test. A lot of times studios will do this when considering someone for a part, but we will have to see how this plays off.

  5. Fillion would be a pretty good choice for Hex because of his relationship (much talked about but never clarified) to Confederate General Jubal Early. Firefly fans will recall the bounty hunter given that name who, in the episode entitled “Objects In Space” was completely pwned by River.

  6. Make-up doesn’t equal good acting. I only liked him in The Mist.

  7. I think that Jane is darn good value and I really thought that he was a kick-ass Punisher!

I also have a soft spot for Dreamcatcher and Deep Blue Sea.

  8. Actually, I think Jane would be a great choice. Will be interested in seeing if this works out.
