Nicolas Cage is ‘Highly Unlikely’ to Join ‘The Expendables 3′ Cast

nicolas cage expendables 3 cast rumor Nicolas Cage is Highly Unlikely to Join The Expendables 3 Cast

The rumor that Nicolas Cage is attached as a cast member to The Expendables 3 began to circle the ‘Net mere days before Expendables 2 opened in theaters (Cage was previously rumored to appear in that film). Since then, the master at losing his (ahem) composure onscreen – whose action hero credentials include his roles in beloved ’90s action flicks The RockCon Air and Face/Off – keeps being mentioned in the ongoing conversation, but has never been confirmed to appear in the next Expendables flick.

Cage is performing promotion duties right now for the upcoming star-vehicle The Frozen Ground, which is a little-publicized thriller based on the real-life case of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen. He took a moment to clear up the Expendables 3 situation, with respect to what’s true and what’s false regarding his involvement.

Here’s what Cage had to offer Den of Geek:

“I have not had any formal discussions about ['Expendables 3']. I’m not in Kick-Ass 2 and I don’t think I’m in Expendables 3. And I like those guys [Sylvester Stallone, etc.], but I would say it would be highly unlikely that I’d be in that movie.”

We’ve known for some time that – barring a “surprise” appearance – Cage would not reprise as Big Daddy in Kick-Ass 2 via dream sequence or flashback (according to his Kick-Ass costar Chloë Grace Moretz). However, the actor’s comment about not having even begun any sort of proper talks for Expendables 3 contradicts what Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer was reported to have said over a month ago.

expendables 3 release date Nicolas Cage is Highly Unlikely to Join The Expendables 3 Cast

So, was Cage being dishonest in this latest interview, was the head of Lionsgate embellishing the Expendables 3 casting process too much – or, might it be that formal negotiations (i.e. not casual talks) have, in fact, never taken place between Cage and the studio? Honestly, it could be any one of the three possibilities, but it won’t be long before we know for certain (seeing how filming on Expendables 3 will begin by the end of August/start of September 2013, in order to make a Summer 2014 release date target).

That said: it would be fun to watch Cage ham it up in Expendables 3, especially if he were to play some deranged mercenary – who our seasoned gut-tottin’ heroes encounter – or a minion of the villain, who is heavily-rumored to be played by the original Mad Max himself, Mel Gibson.

What do you think? Were you hoping to see crazy Cage join Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham and their fellow hyper-macho men in The Expendables 3?

The Expendables 3 opens in U.S. theaters on August 15th, 2014.

  1. I am glad he is not going to be in it. I know someone who has actually met Cage and said he is a complete and utter d-bag. He is not a good actor or person and would have most likely brought the film’s quality down. I know the franchise isn’t known for acting abilities or emotional moments, but he is by far the most overrated actor in Hollywood.

    • As much as I dislike Nicolas Cage, I’d rather have him than Steven Seagal, as I think the latter is a complete joke.

    • He is not a good person??? Check, what made for Johnny Depp

  2. THANK YOU HOLLYWOOD! This movie was going to definitely suffer if it had him in it.

  3. Can’t rule out a possible closed set filming for an indoor scene is my first thought.

  4. I never understood why so many people hate Nicholas Cage. Can anyone give me a reason? I’m not a fan of his but I thought he did plenty of great movies that I really enjoyed as well a fair share of bad ones, but that goes for several other actors as well.

    • Nic last good movie was Lord Of War

  5. Well if Mel Gibson really is the villian in Expendables 3, then Cage is not needed

  6. as well as a fair share*

  7. He was one of the most senseless rumors anyway. I can’t recall him being in an action movie before 1996, when he was in The Rock. Besides, he doesn’t strike me as an ensemble player.

  8. THE BEES!!!!

  9. cage was good in the 90′s and thats it! hes also a moron that fell for a ponzi scheme, forcing himself to go bankrupt! hence why he doesnt even read scripts anymore he just takes the job! and one time out of ten we get a good cage movie in the new millenium such as matchstick men or lord of war! people just need to stop expecting good movies from him! hes hit and miss…. unfortunately lately mostly miss!

  10. wow i just felt like i ranted hardcore and was gonna appologize…. but then i remembered this is screen rant! lmfao

  11. This is a dissapointment. Everything is better with the Cage lol. Especially a movie like expendables which is crazy absurd action 80′s throwbacks. He’d fit right in.

    • NO.

  12. I agree with 1015. I can attest to him treating strays better than he treats the people in his life. Strangely I think he’d get a career boost if he appeared in Expendables 3.

  13. cage career suxs now , he hasn’t had a hit in many years. he doesn’t bring anything to the table…

    • Blame the script, not the actor.

      • @Dazz

No, you have to blame Cage on the string of duds and busts.

        Drive Angry?
        Season of the Witch?
        Ghost Rider 2?
        Drive Angry?
        Bangkok Dangerous?
        Drive Angry?

        The list can go on.

        • HA! Yeah Drive Angry and Especially GR 2 were trash!

      • most actors read the script before signing on to do the movie!

  14. Well Cage never seems to misses an opportunity to be on screen or collect a check, so he probably hasn’t received a “formal” invitation.

  15. I’m fine with this. As I’ve written on this site for over a year, the one major late 80s/early 90s American action star that is missing is Steven Segal. I know that he has been out if shape for a decade, but I think that he’d be motivated to get into better shape if he joins Expendables 3.

  16. good im glad just let it be true i never wanted nic cage on expendables 3

  17. Kurt Russell is better than Cage. I do like Cage, but prefer Kurt. If Cage isn’t gonna be in Ex 3,it’s not going to hurt the movie. I really hope that Seagal loses weight and finally agrees to star in the film. 90% of Seagal’s fight scenes in his films are great. He has made a few s*** films, but still fast and deadly…even though he has gained 70 pounds lol. I’m not a fan of Gibson, having said that,Mel will make a good bad guy. Gibson will be better than JCVD,even though I really like Van Damme.

  18. I only saw the first one in the movie for the fact of seeing the Big Three on screen together for the first time.

…novelty quickly dried up during the movie.

  19. I am very disapointed Cage is the best choise for bad guy

    • that is the difference between the power of magic and vehicle strength …and he’s belong to magic …

  20. Nicolas cage should be in the Expendables 4 as well as John Travolta. They were good together in Face/off. They are like Pacino and DeNiro and Stallone and Schwarzenegger. Cage should be either a hero or villain same with Travolta. For Expendables 4 I would like them to make harrison ford the villain and the traitor. And they should bring Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke back.
