‘Expendables 3′: Production May Begin This Fall; Chan, Snipes and Cage Wanted

It’s safe to say that The Expendables 3 is happening, but who’s joining Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the rest of their gang for another round of self-aware ultra-masculine action fantasy? Jackie Chan might be getting in on the fun, so long as he approves of Sly’s script; furthermore, the rumors about Nicolas Cage and Wesley Snipes boarding the Expendables train – once the latter is released from prison – continue to circulate.

Expendables staple Dolph Lundgren lends further credibility to that speculation in a new interview, where he suggests the third movie could begin shooting as soon as this September. That would set it on-course for a Summer 2014 release and keep the franchise on schedule (e.g. one new installment arriving every two years).

Ludgren informed Movieweb that he doesn’t expect Expendables 3 to be ready for production until this fall, not long after he finishes working on the TV series Rescue 3. He also discussed how Sly welcomes input from his fellow muscle-bound screen heroes, which in part accounts for why the butt-kicking icons Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme eventually agreed to get in on the fun in Expendables 2. (Besides the chance for one last hurrah before fading in the sunset, that is.)

“I let [Sly] go at [the screenplay] first. He kind of knows me creatively, and personally, because we’ve worked together quite a bit. So I will usually read the script, and then I will add a few comments about this or that. He knows all of the actors that are in the piece, and there are so many characters involved. They all want to be involved, and everyone wants to have a little something special to do. So, he tries to satisfy that. He’s done a great job so far. And I trust him. I usually add a few comments, and he is open to that. Yeah, if everything works out…All these other variables…Then I am not that worried about the script, really.”

There’s been talk about old-timers like Steven Seagal, Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood coming aboard to make an appearance in Expendables 3, but the more consistently-whispered names so far have, indeed, been Cage, Chan and Snipes. Lundgren confirms as much, though he admits to being clueless when it comes to how likely any of those names are (or how interested, in the case of Cage and Snipes).

“I don’t know anything for sure. I know…I have heard that they do want Wesley Snipes. They want Jackie Chan. Nicolas Cage, I have heard too. But we don’t know want is going on just yet. All of those are pretty great names. They are good actors, and I think the fans would love to see them in there, with the rest of us, for sure. Yeah.”

Admittedly, Cage and Snipes have financial motivation to agree to Expendables 3, but that doesn’t guarantee their commitment either. Lastly, in terms of director: Expendables 2 helmer Simon West has been associated with the third installment so far, enough as to suggest he’s essentially set to return. However, if he doesn’t, John Woo wouldn’t mind taking the job (or so we’ve heard) …

  1. Let’s keep it real: the oldest actors should definitely be first up for the next EXPENDABLES; meaning no disrespect but to just be on the safe side.

Rotating directors (John Woo at the head of the class this time) is the way to keep each installment fresh (re: different enough).

And with more women permitted to play a role in actual combat, Sly Stallone’s script to reflect such license should have his team suddenly facing off with a female version of themselves (even if only briefly with spot-on casting of Weaver, Grier, Fonda (Bridgette), Bullock, Judd, Lopez, Yeoh, et al.) which could possibly spin off into these ladies’ having their own franchise. (Ok, maybe.)

Taking the action from the White House to the old folks home to the killing fields…a great idea.

Because if THE EXPENDABLES is not fun, then it’s nothing at all.

    • What about Steven Seagal? He should be included in the movie.

  2. Doesn’t Snipes have that little Federal Prison thing to deal with for the next few years?

    • Snipes is supposed to be released on July 16th. So, if it starts shooting in September, he can be in the movie.

  3. Snipes, weathers, mr t, chan all a yes for me. Cage is a big no as he is a dreadful actor in my opinion, can we get Samuel Jackson as no one says muther f**ka like he does! I missed that in avengers :). Is Lou ferigno (hulk) still alive or have all the steroids screwed him up? How about a massive curve ball, Charlie sheen? By the way, Mr T is alive and well and I think resides over here in the uk at the moment, he is pitying us fools at the moment :)

    • Lou Ferrigno’s alive. He actually did the voice of the Hulk in the Avengers. And he was on Celebrity Apprentice last year.

  4. I like the idea of a different legendary action director taking up each Expendables film.

Gina Carano should play Barney’s daughter in the next one.

  5. I would love to be an extra on the new expendables movie if they are going to make it. where do I sign up?

  6. jean claude van damme should do this film again and play the twinbrother or some other character and either be a bad guy or good guy and go up against steven seagal. mel gibson should be a hero or villian and go up against or work with harrison ford. stallone should go up against john travolta. i would love to see hand to hand combat between those 2 it will be like a cross between broken arrow, demolition man and expendables 2. jeff bridges, kurt russell, harrison ford should be working with sly ,arnold, bruce, dolph, statham and the rest of the guys as part of the team. the villians: tommy lee jones, john travolta, don johnson, michael keaton, scott glenn, richard dreyfuss, ray liotta, robert patrick, michael ironside, kurtwood smith, etc.

  7. I am as many others are hoping steven segal is in 3. PLAYING a part with the main team. Even if hes on or even a bad guy as long as hes given the chance. Fans would love to see steven one ofthe great martail artists ofour time. Grouping up with the best of the best . Although I like chan hes more of a comedian than an actions hero. Personally putting vandam in instead of steven was not bad but he looks like death and doesn’t hold a candle to steven. Alot of people would like to see mickyli as well play a bigger roll. Adding steven as a long time friend of barneys would be great for 3. Further more not making many more would be a shame. They are great moives and as long as sly keeps putting them out we will be waiting and watching as long as there is no changes in the writing or directors. As they do with many good moives. Thankyou Billy

  8. kurt russell vs tommy lee jones is what i’d also like to see. because it has never been done. if anyone agrees, fine. if not, that’s ok.

  9. Whatever they do, I personnal belive that John Woo is that right man for the job (Director)

  10. Whatever they do, I personally trust that John Woo is that right man for the job (Director)
