A script for The Expendables 2 has yet to be completed – not to mention, most of the stars from the original Expendables are not yet officially set to return in the sequel (which hasn’t settled on a director yet either). However, according to studio heads, that’s no reason to hold off on promoting the followup to last year’s 1980s action movie throwback.
Early word is that Bruce Willis will have a more significant role in the next ultra-violent screen venture with Sylvester Stallone and Co. – and recent rumors peg Jean-Claude Van Damme as being another member of Team Willis.
Lionsgate has now gone ahead and unveiled both an early synopsis and promotional poster for Expendables 2, which is slated for release next summer. While the one-sheet is just a basic variation on the original Expendables metallic skull image, the plot description falls more on the intriguing side – since it seems that (in appropriate ’80s sequel style) Expendables 2 is going the “This time, it’s personal!” route.
[Update: According to StalloneZone, Stallone himself says this early Expendables 2 synopsis is not legit. However, he promises than the actual synopsis will be released soon.]
NOTE: If you don’t want to know about the fate of a specific Expendables character this early on in the game, you’ll want to pass on reading the synopsis. Consider this your SPOILER WARNING.
Still here? Check out the Expendables 2 synopsis and teaser poster (via First Showing) below:
The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They’re not the only ones who want blood. Tool’s beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity.
Clearly, Expendables 2 is also going to embrace the “bigger equals better” approach that came into vogue back in the 1980s (and remains in fashion today). The stakes are being raised higher; the Expendables crew have more personal motivation to carry out this next mission; and with Stallone “going for all the marbles” this time around, there will be even more beefy aging action icons joining the party. Hopefully that translates into the second Expendables pic being an improvement on the original.
The Expendables 2 will arrive in theaters on August 17th, 2012.
