expendables 2 casting Expendables 2: Chuck Norris Set Photo & Antonio Banderas

If the previously-released photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Sylvester Stallone on the set of The Expendables 2 wasn’t macho enough for you – today, we’ve got a new one that includes Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, and the “manliest man” alive: Chuck Norris.

There’s also been confirmation from one aging action star – namely, Antonio Banderas – that he was unable to accept an invitation from Stallone to appear in the Expendables sequel. Whether he would be willing to appear in any potential future installments, on the other hand…

Willis’ claim that Stallone was “going for all the marbles this time” by getting as many tough guy movie icons over the age of 40 (or so) in Expendables 2 turned out to be more than true. Now that principal photography on the “old-school” action throwback sequel is getting going overseas in Bulgaria, it seems the film’s acting lineup is all set – including returning stars like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Crews, Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Randy Couture (but no Mickey Rourke), along with franchise newbies Norris, Scott Adkins, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and (young) Liam Hemsworth.

Many a fan was disappointed when Norris – who last appeared onscreen in The Cutter (2005)  - didn’t show up in the first Expendables flick. So the addition of the now 71-year-old Walker, Texas Ranger star is definitely being welcomed by those who are hopeful that Expendables 2 (unlike its predecessor) will be the true, unadulterated homage to marvelously cheesy cinematic testosterone fests from the ’80s and ’90s.

Check out Crews, Norris, Lundgren, and part of the Expendables 2 production team – looking (what else) tough and ready for action – in the set photo below:

While the cast of Expendables 2 has more than plenty of beefy badasses to spare, it would’ve been appropriate for someone like Banderas – star of movies like Desperado, Assassins, The Mask of Zorro, The 13th Warrior, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and more – to have also shown up. However, as the Spanish star mentioned to Worst Previews recently, it simply wasn’t to be:

“They asked me to do ['Expendables 2'], I don’t think at this point I will have the time. I am very disappointed that it didn’t work out. [As for 'Expendables 3']… you never know I will have to talk to Sly.”

Whether or not a third Expendables is destined to happen is another matter. However, between the “big and bad” cast, experienced action helmer Simon West taking over directorial duties from Stallone, and a screenplay penned by the odd couple of newcomer David Agosto and Ken Kaufman (Muppets from Space, Space Cowboys, The Missing)… it’ll be interesting to see just how Expendables 2 turns out – both in terms of quality and box office returns.

The Expendables 2 will hit theaters around the U.S. on August 17th, 2012.

  1. Nice!

  2. I’m surprised he wasn’t in the first one. I hope he’s not under used.

  3. Awesome photo.

I hope The Expendables 2 turns out to better than the first one, this time more action, more explosions, more gunfights and more fight scenes than ever.

I think Antonio Banderas would had been great in this one but no knows, maybe Banderas might come back for The Expendables 3 if that happens.

Still I really hope TE2 turns out to be the greatest action movie ever with a legendary cast like this, it maybe might.

  4. Thought jeff speakman was going to be in the movie

  5. Love seeing Chuck in another movie. Like foopher said, I hope he isn’t under used.

  6. So, guess that means no Donnie Yen then huh? That would have been all kinds of awesome…

  7. Did Steven Seagal decline? Was he even invited? If he wasn’t even asked to be a part of this, it would be a shame.

    • Steven Seagal has had a beef with Producer Avi Lerner for quite some time. Rumors of a contractual dispute to a breach of contract in their work history have floated about, but it is still unclear. That’s why he graciously declined when Sly approached him for part 1.

    • van damme and Steven doesn’t get alone. Van damme mention if Steven join the expendable that van damme will not be in the film

  8. I have to agree with Ken J on the whole Donnie Yen thing. Talk about some of the best fight scenes that have ever hit the screen. Only thing I compare that to is all the different scenes from Jackie Chan movies with his use of improvised weapons (ladders, chairs, crazy shoes etc. etc.) and smooth maneuvering through the environment. Either one of those two could work really. They’re both kind of old. Chan being older at like 57ish, and yen only being like 48.

    • It would be cool to see jet li vs Donnie yen go at it again in the expendables 2.

    • let it be one chines jet, he is enough. matama uganda

      • Yah, those pesky slant-eyes, they should have Jet Li just so they won’t complain, otherwise, nobody wants any more of those zipperheads in the movie unless we really need them, but I don’t see a railroad that needs building, so…

  9. the NORRIS is in the movie. IT’S SO ON

  10. Great photo. I’m very excited that Chuck Norris in TE2.

  11. I know Clint Eastwood said Gran Torino would probably be his last acting role, but I would love a cameo from him. Norris and Eastwood on the same screen would most likely make every theater projector simultaneously explode.

    • True That!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • No hes gunna be in that movie about the baseball scout. It would be awesome tho. plus tommy lee jones would be a nice addition.

    • No hes gunna be in that movie about the baseball scout. It would be awesome though. plus tommy lee jones would be a nice addition.

  12. sweeet chuck norris is gonna kick some ass =)

  13. is Norris going to play someones great great grandfather karate chop oops I pooped a little

  14. Rad!!!

  15. The Rock? Vin Diesel? Sonny Cheeba? Awesome that Chuck at JCVD are in!!

  16. What about Carl Weathers? He worked with Stallone in the Rocky movies, and so did Mr. T. How come they aren’t in the movie?
Don’t forget Jackie Chan, Kurt Russell, Randy Piper, Vin Diesel,

  17. Cool!!!

  18. One person need to be add to this cast Micheal Jai White he would be great for this cast!

  19. hmm you suppose tom cruise would do good in the expendables or overly rated?. be interesting lol.
or how bout make jackie can the bad gu and go agaisnt li lol make niether of them win make slyveste pop both of them lol jk. anyways cant wait to see this one knowingly chuck going to kick some ass oh yeah walker texas is back old school style, show these kids what action movies really are haha. i prolly went over board meh. :)

  20. Can’t breathe… It had better be good!

  21. how about alec baldwin and his brothers, kurt russell, tommy lee jones, nick nolte and jeff bridges? they are good action actors. kurt russell vs tommy lee jones or jeff bridges or even alec baldwin. travolta against baldwin that will be good too. i hope they make another expendables if the second one will be good. kurt russell needs a good action movie with explosions and guns again ever since escape from new york, etc.

  22. jeff bridges and tommy lee jones should be up against ech other again like with blown away. how about mel gibson and harrison ford up against each other as well. kurt russell vs alec baldwin or steven seagal vs kurt russell and alec baldwin.

  23. kurt russell vs tommy lee jones for this expendables sequel.
