Jean Claude Van Damme Talks ‘The Expendables 2′ & Steven Seagal’s Weight

Published 3 years ago by

Sylvester Stallone has brought several new action icons into his Expendables universe in The Expendables 2. In accordance with upping the thrills and comedy ante in this one, he tapped Bloodsport’s Jean Claude Van Damme to play the central antagonist, Jean Vilain.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Van Damme to talk about growing as an actor, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning and who should play the villain in The Expendables 3.

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) – with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard – are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time – six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother.

That is done the Expendables way….

The Expendables 2 opens in theaters this Friday, August 17th.

  1. I have not seen him in a while. He looks so much older after all those years. I am Happy to see you back on the screen Van damme! I t is always a pleasure. The first movie I saw from him was Kickboxer. But it seems that my favorite is his first: Bloodsport. Maybe it`s the soundtrack lol

Good Luck in the Expendables!!! :)

    • KUMITE!

    • First film I remember seeing him in was as a villain in “No retreat No Surrender”. It is great to see him back on screen, but yeah in this interview it looks like he has not aged well.

    • He doesn’t look older, he looks meaner & evil lol.

  2. This alone makes me a sucker once more. Van damme as vilian will be way better then eric roberts!

  3. Yes, it is good to see him back..
I think he talks about that a little in this interview..
    Mentioning working on his acting..
Like so many Actors they come in and do the same persona for every film and that’s what kills their careers after awhile… Not always their fault ofc cause Hollywood usually asks them to do it but they have to learn to either say No or find a way to do it otherwise…

Mr, Seagal does need to lose soem weight and then he would make a great villain for EXP’s 3… TBH I do hate seeing my Fav actors being villains sometimes but i think I’ll live with it on this one..

  4. “Lee Christmas (Lee Statham)”

    Wait what?

    • Statham is a method actor. He changed his name for this role.

  5. i was a kid and was very impressed from his first role as a supercool villain in no retreat-no surrender(karate tiger 1 here in germany). and after i did watched – bloodsport- i was blown away and was some days later member in our karate-club in my hometown.

  6. In accordance with upping the thrills and comedy ante in this one, he tapped Bloodsport’s Jean Claude Van Damme to play the central antagonist, Jean Vilain.

  7. Jean-Claude van Damme never left but his latest roles have not been noteworthy even when he has worked on his acting. It has improved a little but he still has no range. He could have been part of the first Expendables and he turned it down. That was very stupid of him.Because it could have brought him back on the map.The fact that he has joined now he must have realized he made a mistake. If JCVD really wants to become a fully fledged actor than he has to go on stage and star in some plays and do Shakespeare or something. But seriously who wants to see JCVD act?

  8. to be honest, i like just his old films, i think since 10 years i didn´t watched a film from him, he had just bad directors since 12 years or longer.

    • I like all of his older movies. And in those he never pretended to be more than an action star. The focus was on the action and everything else was bonus. You can’t blame all of the latest failures on the directors.A director can only do so much with such a limited actor. It’s not that I dislike him.But one should know his own limitations. And JCVD will only be able to prove himself with different roles in other genres. If he wants it so bad why doesn’t he make his own movies. He could make shorts to show real acting skill or something in that direction.Just saying!

  9. I love Van Damme! I used to own all of his movies on VHS then a few on DVD, my favourite was Double Impact ‘with my biiiiig legs and karate, I can do the splits nooooooo problem’ haha super cheesey but I love it!

And he’s right Segal does need to lose weight, he lost it once he became a enviromentialist Buddhist pie eating mofo, piled on the pounds and made On Deadly Ground, awful!! He can now be seen huffing and puffing his way around trying to catch jay walkers! Shame

Defo more Van Damme please!! Mel Gibson for Expendable 3 stroking his Beaver!!

  10. Really surprised on how classy he was about Seagal, after all Seagal has been S*** talking him for 20 years

    • I agree. I heard he refused to do Expendables 2 if Steven Seagal was gonna be in it, but it’s good to hear JCVD actually saying good things about him and recommending him for the next film.

  11. How can you not love JCVD? I could watch another 30 mins of him being interviewed!! lol Hopefully this gets him more mainstream work. JCVD the movie was awesome.

  12. Seagal’s fatness is what makes the world go round and thus it is only logical that his belly would be a perfect monster movie which Expendables 3 promises to be

  13. I think MR.Seagal would do great in the flim.

  14. Seagal could die 40 minutes into the film after a heroic act saving the rest of the Expendables (including Kurt Russell).

    See ‘Executive Decision’

  15. This is frustrating cannot see anything in the article y’all are talking about. Is it a video or do I need to be on a laptop to veiw the article?

    • It’s in the video interview at the very top.

  16. I would love to see Seagal as the bad guy too in the next one. The problem is Seagal has issues with the producer Avi Lerner and will never do a movie that he produces. He has already turned down parts in the first two movies. He’ll never do it.

  17. Seagal vs stallone, snipes and van damme.

  18. Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme should be in Expendables 4. They both were considered for the lead roles in Face/off and Demolition Man. It would be a treat to see these two in a movie together since they are both accomplished martial artists in their own way. Yes they have competed with each other but guess what Schwarzenegger and Stallone did that too and look at them now. They are doing great movies together.
