The Expendables 3, which may be the last installment of Sylvester Stallone's popular franchise, comes out in theaters August 15th (and if the trailers are any indication, Stallone and his gang of geriatric action stars will be going out with a bang).

Though this is undoubtedly sad news for some, there's no need to despair. While Stallone and company may be packing things up, there's another gang of badass mercenaries ready for action: The ExpendaBelles.

The female-focused spinoff of The Expendables has been in development for a while now, with director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde) working off of a script from writing team Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith (also Legally Blonde). Now, we've got some more information on the status of the film.

At a red carpet event for The Expendables 3, producer Avi Lerner told The Hollywood Reporter that he's "going to do it at the beginning of next year. We are writing the final lines of the script, we’ve got lots of ideas about who is going to be in it.

Sigourney Weaver meets Sylvester Stallone in The Expendabelles

Could one of those cast members be the always fantastic Sigourney Weaver? If Sylvester Stallone gets his way, then the answer is a resounding yes.

Stallone reportedly said he would love to see Weaver join The Expendabelles as his onscreen wife (though it's likely that the 68-year-old action legend was joking since he also described a possible plot where Weaver ends up getting "the house, the kids and my mercenaries" in a divorce settlement).

As we posted earlier this year, the actual plot of the movie conforms to much more traditional action movie standards.

When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator - and instead save the scientist and the day.

Here at Screen Rant, we've long advocated for having Sigourney Weaver lead an all-female group of action stars. (We even came up with a list back before the female Expendables film was even announced!) So naturally, we're excited at the prospect of having Weaver join the cast.

There have been a number of big names swirling around this movie - including Milla Jovavich, Cameron Diaz, and even Meryl Streep - but who better to call the shots than Weaver? If she could handle the Xenomorphs in four different Alien movies spanning nearly 20 years, she can definitely step up the plate here.

What do you think? Is Sigourney Weaver a must for The ExpendaBelles?

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for more ExpendaBelles news.
