FOX renews The Exorcist for season 2 as fans of the original drama series based on the classic film of the same name from 1973 directed by William Friedkin will be happy to learn. Taking obvious inspiration from Friedkin’s film – which was itself adapted from the bestselling novel by the late American writer and filmmaker William Peter Blatty – The Exorcist television series premiered last fall for a grand total of 10 episodes under the creative direction of writer and executive producer Jeremy Slater.

The Exorcist on FOX has seen fit thus far to act as a direct sequel to the original film from 1973, with starring turns from the likes of Geena Davis, Alfonso Herrera, and Ben Daniels. Acting as a part of the larger feature franchise, the show has proven to be a minor hit among critics who have lauded the program with generally favorable reviews thus far – and the latest word has another season on the way.

According to Deadline, season 2 of The Exorcist is definitely on the way from Slater and company, with talks of bringing in a full-time showrunner as the series continues to develop and expand past its initial 10 episodes. Despite remaining a modest hit in terms of ratings, FOX is definitely invested enough in the underlying premise and feature franchise that stands behind the production to keep producing it for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to where the show might go next, Slater has gone on record as stating that he has, “A lot more story to tell,” though little else is known at the time of this writing in regards to what narrative territory The Exorcist might tackle next season on FOX. But given the strength of its cast and continued relevance of its source material, Slater likely has more than a few tricks up his sleeve that will manage to keep audiences interested for season 2.

Many cinephiles the world over no doubt hold the original 1973 film directed by William Friedkin in high regard, and as such any continuation of the original story written by William Peter Blatty is the cause for some celebration. Only time will tell whether or not The Exorcist continues to grow and mature as it enters into season 2 on FOX, but here’s to hoping for the very best from Slater and company in the meantime.
