Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 29th, 2010

This week:

The box office gets Exorcised and there are quite few Takers for Avatar: Special Edition; What happens when you mix A Clockwork Orange with The Dark Knight: Psychopomp; Angry Birds: The Movie; the surfs up for Sam Worthington as he lets his career Drift; Jim Carrey ppppp picks up a Penguin; Carey Mulligan goes for a Drive with Ryan Gosling and more.

Box Office

It was all change at the box office over the weekend as Takers captured the top spot. The crime thriller which stars a slew of familiar faces like Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown and Matt Dillon grabbed $20.5 million worth of moviegoer’s cash in its unexpectedly successful debut.

The Last Exorcism Poster Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 29th, 2010

The Last Exorcism swooped into the  number two position over the three days. The Eli Roth produced frightener scared up $20.3 million despite complaints of a terrible ending.

Sly and the family Stallone dropped to three. After two weeks at the top The Expendables brought in another $9.5 million for an $82 million total – $100 million is now in its grasp.

Julia Roberts’ Eat Pray Love came in at four after grossing just under $7 million. The total for the film now stands at $60 million. It doesn’t have a chance of hitting $100 million, but it shows that Roberts still has some star wattage left.

The Other Guys shot up $6.5 million and upped their total to just under $100 million. Will Ferrell breathes a sigh of relief and audiences want more Michael Keaton. All’s fair in love and war.

Vampires do indeed suck and so does (I presume) Vampires Suck. It’s a film that I wouldn’t be caught (un)dead watching, but someone is as the film only dipped 55% from last weekend’s debut. I say only because that’s a pretty decent decline for this sort of film. Another $5.5 for this frightening movie gives it a respectable $28 million. Kids, save your money and go see Inception.

Speaking of Inception, it has now brought its total up to over $270 million, after banking another $5 million.

Nanny McPhee Returns grossed another $4.7 million and upped its total to $17 million. This film has already made its money on the international circuit, so its US release is just a formality. You may even expect Nanny McPhee Returns Again… or something.

The Switch just didn’t turn on moviegoers. The Jennifer Aniston/ Jason Bateman comedy has only brought in $16.4 million since its launch. It shouldn’t get to over $30 million.

Piranha 3D did what any good horror films does – and dropped by over 50% in its second weekend. The horror remake/ reboot/ reimagining or whatever the hell they’re calling it chewed up another $4.5 million. With just under $18.5 million in the bank a sequel is on the way. I expect that this will make a killing when it hits DVD in an unrated form.

Jim Cameron’s Avatar: Special Edition opened at number eleven after scoring $3.8 million. The re-release of the highest grossing film of all time adds an extra 9 minutes of footage to the 3D epic. The film has now brought in a mind (and eye) blowing $753.5 million in the US alone. This Special Edition debut might be something of a disappointment for Cameron and Fox, however considering that the film is already out on DVD, with a double dip on the way – it’s pretty much all gravy at this point.

Movie News

1. Get ready for Psychopomp. “What’s that?” I hear you say.

Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Psychopomp is the name of the title character, a foul-mouthed anti-hero who roams international hot spots with state-of-the art weapons and technology with the aim of destroying those who violate his code. The script has been described as having tones similar to A Clockwork Orange and The Dark Knight.”

Hilary Shor one of the producers behind Children of Men has optioned the script in the hopes of bringing it to the big screen.

Shor says:

“This is the evil twin of the Children of Men future world Alfonso created. A lot of material I’m best known for developing is ‘weighty,’ for lack of a better word, but this really appealed to me. It’s the graphic novel world and something I’ve been interested in exploring.”

Shor(ly) not.

This sounds like one of those films that will go into development and never be made. Then again – what do I know?

2. I don’t have an iphone or an iPad, so I haven’t played the top-selling app Angry Birds. But it has sold over 6.5 million downloads. In Hollywood that can only mean one thing – movie! The Finnish company behind Angry Birds, Rovio, plans to turn the game into a franchise.

There’s really nothing more that I can say about that without destroying the PG environment of Screen Rant. Nothing at all.

3. Since December (if not before) a week doesn’t seem to have gone by that we haven’t written about Sam Worthington being attached to one project or another. Guess what?

Yup. Worthington is now attached to a new Australian surfing drama called Drift.

According to Playlist:

“The film will see Worthington — an avid, lifelong surfer — play a photographer and journalist who is instrumental in the evolution of surfing from a pastime into a global industry, as local surf wear manufacturers like Rip Curl and Billabong grow into iconic global brands.”

Worthington had this to say about the $11 million film:

“I’m a [Western Australian] boy at heart and to go back there and put something back into my home town is something I am really looking forward to. There’s something pure and true about surfing, and there is something pure and true about this script.”

The film is due to shoot next year and presumably it means that Worthington will be able to fit in one or two of his other films before then.

4. Disney has picked up a pitch by writers Ahmet Zappa and Michael Wilson titled Monster Witness Relocation Program.

Monsterfoot Productions will produce the film alongside Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment. It’s apparently being tooled as a potential starring vehicle for Smith’s son Jaden.

Sounds like this might be Smith Jr’s Men In Black style franchise.

5. Jim Carrey is set to star in an adaptation of Mr. Popper’s Penguins.

According to Deadline:

“The movie version takes the book into an upscale direction: a high-powered businessman suddenly inherits six penguins. As he gets acquainted with – and increasingly attached to – his winged roommates, Popper’s life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he’s long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail. But thanks to his new charges, Popper comes to understand the importance of family – human and otherwise”.

In the past Jack Black , Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller have flirted with the project which is being directed by Mark Waters, the man who brought us Mean Girls and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Word on the street is that 20th Century Fox got Carrey on the “cheap”. I thought that penguins made more of a squawking sound.

The Oscar nominated (and BAFTA winning ) actress Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston are negotiations to join Ryan Gosling in Drive.

The film follows Hollywood stuntman who works as getaway driver during robberies. When the obligatory bank job goes wrong, he ends up on the run with a contract on his head and an ex-con’s moll in his car. Mulligan would play the female lead in the film(obviously).

Nicolas Winding Refn directs the film, which originally being tooled as a Hugh Jackman starrer.

Mulligan will next be seen in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps alongside Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf which opens on September 24.

  1. poor cammy..maybe that take will finance another deep sea excursion from him lol

    • Well, it’s not like he hasn’t made enought out of that film.

      • exactly lol he’s made MORE than enough lol

        • You really can’t make “more than enough” when it comes to money.

          • sure you can. does one really need a gazzilion dollars to live on for the rest of his/her life?

            • Depends on the person. I don’t need that much to live, but if I sure would have a lot of fun with all that money.

  2. I cant wait to hear more about jim carreys new movie! Oh and i knew excorsist would win :D It got soooo packed in my theater ppl actually got refunds cuz there was no seats.

    • well it was a no brainer ricky, a 3 year old coulda predicted the no.1 spot this week :)

  3. I didn’t any of those films this weekend. Nothing out that interested me. I may go see ‘Avatar’ next week, or just save my money for ‘Machete’.

  4. For as many films as sam worthington is attached to he never has one out lol!

  5. I can’t wait to see more Carey Mulligan! Anyone else interested in checking out her sci-fi drama “Never Let Me Go” that comes out next month?

And with a 71% average on Rotten Tomatoes, I certainly wouldn’t consider reviews for the Last Exorcism “poor”, and I really hope that Psychopomp gets made, it sounds good.

  6. ANTHONY

LOL! you really hate cameron i see.

But yeah,if you were in his possission youd want more money too,no one can ever get enough money, even if youre the richest person you still want more.

    • ricky, dont talk to me about him till you see The Terminator, T2, aliens, True lies, or the The Abyss lol :)

    • and ricky, i dont need gobs of money to be happy like most of the snooty people in hollywood :)

      • Anthony you don’t need gobs of money, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be nice lol However I agree with you on Cameron and all the re releasing. It’s beyond natural greed it’s extreme. Do I want a gazillion dollars? Hell yea. Do I need it? No. Would I do anything to get it including unhealthy or morally wrong things? No.

I really only need about 60K a year to be comfortably and happy. More is always nice, but that’s all I need for now.

        • ya i know daniel, but it seems cammy does, im quite happy with where im at as far as finances go, i asked this question a while back when the rerelease was announced..how much is enough. and no i dont want a gazillion dollars, but thats just me. nor do i feel the need for it

          • I agree on not needing it, but how can you not want that much money? Seriously would you actually turn it down?

Not sure if you know this Anthony, but money doesn’t bit it won’t hurt you. Don’t be afraid of it. Money isn’t evil only people are.

  7. Only thing there that sounded interesting to me was Psychopomp. It may not make it to theatres, but I can at least hope it makes it to DVD.

  8. Psychopomp Sounds good.

There hasn’t been anything good in theaters since Scott P. Personally I’m not going this week I’m waiting for The Town which isn’t out til September 17th so I’ll keep waiting. Though the Winning season does sound interesting, but it’s gonna have a very very limited release and I won’t be able to see it.

  9. Wow that means I’ll never be able to talk about him to you lmao!

    • i was kissing sir, sheesh, lighten up francis :)

      • i meant KIDDING..GD hate typing after i wake up from a nap LOL

  10. Hahaha ok. I wish I had money lol! Working at the movies won’t get me anywhere lmao!

  11. Lmaoooo!!!! Hahaha i do to Ants,I do too…..

    • whose ants?

  12. You’re ants!!!!

    • to 790 i am lol, to you im anthony

  13. Oh no if he can call u ants surely I can ;)

    • well..he actually asked if it was ok to tag me with a nickname lol

  14. Daniel F

is that really all the cash u get a year?!!

  15. Anthony
    it’s cool if u got a problem with me calling u ants I won’t.

    • LOL…youre funny ricky no harm no foul, i like to push peoples buttons.anyway back to films..Machete comes out next week!!!

or..this week depending on who you ask lol

      • Oh anthony you break my heart saying you want to see Machete lol. It’s a film with bad to mediocre actors and it looks dumb. :( don’t make me cry

  16. If I was getting a zillion dollars for free I’d take it!!!

  17. I wanna see the last exorcism.

  18. I know you do ANTS lmao! Naw I like Anthony better. Ants is too funny for me to call u.
But yeah machete will be bad ass :D

  19. Sully

I’m thinkng of going to see that today!!!

  20. i dont lol. pg-13 horror films just ruin the genre for me :( i’ll never forgive Raimi for sinking down to a PG-13 level either

  21. Pg 13 movies now are on par with old rated R movies and rated R movies now are on par with NC17 that’s how I see it…..

    • not really ricky, you can usually tell a pg-13 movie from an r rating..go watch the fog, the remake and the original, you’ll see what i mean

    • Ricky I’m sorry, but PG13 movies these days still don’t compare to old Rated R movies. Honestly man PG13 still can’t curse much and are not allowed nudity 99% of the time.

Your partially right on rated R some of them are more along the lines of NC17, but most art. That’s mostly because alot of movies makers who made a film got sick of no one seeing it because it was pushed to NC17 so they went after the MPAA. Still most R films don’t compare to the usual NC17 and PG13 doesn’t even compare to R films from 20 or even 40 years ago.

  22. ricky, hows the king reading going, have you been looking into books?

  23. Not really. I don’t have much time to read, and I get bored easily lol! But I saw that different seasons book at barnes and noble for 7.99 I was gonna get it,but I thought better to get it from the library. I’m cheap as u can see lmao!

    • well, if i could part with an of my books i would but i wont and cant lol

  24. and ricky, Different Seasons is great..some really good film adaptations came from that book

  25. Yes I think u can tell the difference. But what I mean is like Harry potter 4 and 5 are pg 13 when part 6 is pg. Like these should be pg if the last excorsism is pg 13 don’t u think?!?

  26. Anthony
yes I’ve seen apt pupil and stand by me :D

    • and the shawshank redemption right?

  27. Oh yeah that one too :D there was another story there too what’s the name of it?!? Is there a movie of that as well?!?

    • no…its called the breathing method, its pretty good as well.

  28. ricky, again..go see The Fog..the remake and the original..watch the original first

  29. Oh yeah I remember. Damn I wouldve seen that movie too.
