Can we just fast forward 15 years when the reimagined dark version that won't suck is released. Maybe we'll all be surprised by our low expectations for this movie making it better than it is.

My expectations remain about the same ... this will be a "guilty pleasure" movie for me, just as GI Joe itself has been a guilty pleasure for me for over twenty years. I had hoped that we'd get a "respectable"/respected movie, but it's kind of an uphill battle considering the over-the-top concepts of some of the characters and equipment. I still hope to enjoy the movie on some level, since there have always been a lot of cheesy moments in the franchise's story-telling, particularly in the old cartoon, but the redeeming qualities (overall storytelling, character moments, and cool action set pieces) offset the goofiness. Most of the time.

The old Marvel comic series was (when it was at its best in the mid-1980s) actually quite good and engaging, especially when you consider it was originated in support of a toy line. Since Larry Hama, the writer/creator of that mythos was a consultant on the movie, I still have hopes that it will have enough nods to the old Joe continuities as well as being enjoyable, even if it's not a cinematic masterpiece.
