Before the Fall

Here’s a film that looks very interesting – It’s called Before the Fall and is one of those “apocalypse films” but with a twist: It’s Spanish.

Why is that a “twist?” Because frankly it seems to me the good ol’ U.S. of A. has the market cornered on the genre (Roland Emmerich, Michael Bay, and if you go way back, Irwin Allen).

What I like about what I see so far is that it seems to have that very personal, low key sensibility so common to foreign films – combining that with an end-of-the-world scenario should make for a very compelling story (as opposed to what we’re likely to get with 2012, for example).

Here’s the official synopsis of Before the Fall:

“What would you do if the world was going to end in 72 hours? A giant meteorite is about to collide with Earth. The planet is gripped by despair and chaos. The inhabitants of the little town of Laguna listen to the news in terror. Ale, a frustrated young man who lives with his mother and works at doing odd jobs, decides to spend his last days shut away, getting drunk and listening to his favorite music. But his plans change when he is forced to help his mother, Rosa, to protect his brother Tomas’ four children when Lucio, an ambiguous, disturbing stranger appears.”

Here are a few images from the film, followed by an exclusive clip provided to us by IFC Films.

This film will not be getting a theatrical release, but will instead be available on Cable and Satellite via “on Demand” on July 22nd. We’ll be getting a copy of the film and will be reviewing it prior to its debut, and I’m hoping that it lives up to the images and clip shown above. The film was directed by F. Javier Gutierrez and written by Juan Velarde and the director.
