Another year of San Diego Comic-Con is in the books, and as usual, there's plenty to talk about, especially when it comes to the DC Extended Universe. Not only did we get trailers and footage for the in-production movies, but a whole new slate of movies was announced, there were some leaks and rumors about behind the scenes details on several films, some details about future plans were revealed in interviews, and more.

Aquaman

Despite Aquaman being next on DC's slate after Justice League, there was surprisingly little actually revealed about the film. The high point for DC's aquatic king was some Hall H exclusive footage shown. While anyone not in attendance at the panel (or anyone that was there but wants to see it again) will have to settle for a simple description of the Aquaman teaser footage for the time being, it's encouraging to note the reception was universally positive, even drawing comparisons to the opening of Star Wars, only under water.

In the footage presented, there's an army of manta-shaped submarines, soldiers riding sharks, and more. While it was a great tease of the aesthetic and the tone, it was anything but a proper trailer, merely giving Hall H attendees a taste of what they can expect in December 2018 without revealing any explicit story details. In the same vein, there was concept art shown revealing more of the same, also confirming the appearance of Black Manta, who's said to maintain a look that's very in line with his traditional comic book suit and helmet.

Otherwise, the biggest Aquaman reveal coming out of Comic-Con is that Ocean Master (who we already know will be played by Patrick Wilson) is going to be the movie's villain. This might not be the biggest revelation to anyone that assumed that to be the case when Wilson's casting was originally announced, but Orm hasn't always been a villain in his comic book incarnations, and there was always a possibility his presence in Aquaman would be used to set him up for a villain role in a potential sequel - after all, Aquaman already has a big villain in Black Manta.

Batgirl

While Batgirl doesn't have an official release date yet, we do know it's coming since news broke that Joss Whedon would be writing and directing the project for the DCEU in a story featuring the Barbara Gordon version of the character and likely heavily influenced by Gail Simone's New 52 run.

There weren't any more official details presented during the Warner Bros. Hall H panel at Comic-Con, but a Batgirl logo was on display for the announcement of the DCEU's future slate of movies, showing the studio is serious about moving forward and it's not just another of the many hypothetical developments they're working on behind the scenes.

During and interview at Comic-Con, Geoff Johns did confirm that Joss Whedon will be starting work on Batgirl "next year," but whether that means cameras will be rolling for a 2019 release or simply he'll start drafting the story still remains to be seen. She's not expected to make an appearance in Justice League, but with Commissioner Gordon's "It's good to see you playing well with others again" line to Batman from the first Justice League trailer, it looks like the groundwork for her arrival is already being established.

The Batman

As one of the most anticipated movies in the DCEU's future, there's been a lot of buzz about eventual Batman solo film. Ben Affleck was originally lined up to write, direct, produce, and lead the movie, but after his experiences in the production of Batman v Superman and Justice League, he determined the burden of wearing so many cowls on such a massive production wasn't feasible and Matt Reeves was brought in as a new director. Negotiating complete creative control over the movie, Reeves is seemingly going back to the drawing board on the story for the movie, meaning Affleck may no longer have any involvement as a writer and will just produce and star.

Needless to say, Affleck's slow withdrawal has lead to a lot of speculation about his future with the DCEU, and - while the news didn't originate from Comic-Con, over the weekend a report came out suggesting his days as the Caped Crusader were numbered. Addressing the rumors head on in Hall H, Affleck emphatically declared his love for the role and reassured fans that he would continue to portray the Dark Knight - especially now that Matt Reeves is directing the solo film.

The official name of the film has long been assumed to be The Batman, but it wasn't officially confirmed until Warner Bros. showed the collection of logos for future projects showing The Batman as one of them.

That's the extent of the news for The Batman from Hall H, but Geoff Johns talked about plans for the Batman Universe on film, saying he wants to build it out like it is in the comics. While that likely extends beyond The Batman to movies like Batgirl, the foundation of that sub-universe will no doubt be on the shoulders of Matt Reeves and Ben Affleck when The Batman production finally gets underway in the near future.

 Flashpoint

Warner Bros. intention to make a Flash movie has been known for several years now since Ezra Miller was cast as the character back in October of 2014, but the movie has seen a fairly troubled development, losing multiple writers and directors, and currently, nobody is set to helm the project.

While the official status of the project didn't garner its own announcement, it was revealed along with the other DCEU logos that the Flash movie will be titled "Flashpoint," which, as any DC comics fan will know, could have massive implications for the entirety of the DCEU. While it's pretty unlikely that Flashpoint will result in any kind of wide scale reboot of DCEU continuity, the choice of that title for the Flash movie is a big hat tip from Warners and DC that Barry Allen is going to make some changes to the timeline. In a universe that's willing to kill off Superman (at least temporarily), who knows what that means for the full impact of Flashpoint.

Green Lantern Corps

Green Lantern Corps Comic

Where's Green Lantern? As a founding member of the Justice League, Green Lantern is the only major missing piece to the DCEU's first iteration of the DC hero team. There have been repeated teases from both Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer (and now Jason Momoa) regarding a potential Green Lantern casting, although Hammer has since admitted that he's simply been trolling fans.

Despite an obvious absence of the Emerald Knight so far, WB isn't without a plan for a Green Lantern introduction. He's prominently acknowledged in the new DC character banner before Wonder Woman (which was also on display in Hall H at Comic-Con), a Green Lantern Corps movie is confirmed to be in development, and fans were thrilled to hear a reference to "Lanterns" during the Comic-Con Justice League trailer.

There was no new Green Lantern Corps news as a part of the Warner Bros. Hall H presentation, but the character banner they had on display featured both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, suggesting they will both be featured when Green Lantern Corps finally arrives.

Justice League

Needless to say, Justice League was all the buzz when it comes to the DCEU Comic-Con presence. As soon as the show floor opened, fans got an up close and personal look at the movie costumes, the Human, Atlantean, and Amazonian Mother Boxes, and a striking new poster inspired by Alex Ross's classic Justice League art.

There were also a number of reveals thanks to the toys on display. Hot Toys' Superman figure gave a good look at what's presumed to be Superman's Justice League suit, which is notably brighter than his previous appearances (coinciding with an anticipated lighter tone of the movie), Steppenwolf's full appearance was revealed through another action figure (more on him later), Mera's hydrokinetic powers were also confirmed through a toy, and we got out best look yet at Batman's new vehicles, the Flying Fox and the Nightcrawler.

Hall H came with some of the biggest Justice League reveals. Zack Snyder was not in attendance for the first time in many years, but he did send his best to his team via Twitter prior to the event. During the presentation, Cyborg actor Ray Fisher got to address the rampant speculation over Justice League's current reshoots being overseen by Joss Whedon, saying simply that he reshoots are brief, and Zack Snyder picked a great director to finish up his movie.

The most exciting part was obviously the trailer where fans got to see lots of new footage, some story details, the official reveal of Steppenwolf, and much more covered in our full trailer breakdown.

Justice League Dark

The original members of the Justice League Dark

Warner Bros. intentions to make a Justice League Dark movie are well known. The flick even had a director, Dough Liman, attached until scheduling conflicts forced his departure. Even so, Warners may have eyes on a replacement already, and rumor has it the film might be one of the next DCEU movies to go into production, meaning it could be expected to arrive as soon as fall/winter 2019.

There was no JLD talk during the Hall H panel, but the movie did get its logo featured with the graphic showing in progress movies, corroborating rumors of its imminent production. The banner on display in the presentation,  like the DC films intro before Wonder Womanfeatured John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Things, and more, possibly suggesting some of the characters we'll see as a part of the team, so the magical side of the DCEU could see a lot of attention in the near future.

Shazam!

Shazam powers up in DC Comics

Despite silence on the Shazam! front in recent news - unless it was related to Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's plans for a Black Adam movie - DC's former Captain Marvel was one of the first characters to recieve major Comic-Con news with official confirmation that a Shazam! movie is expected to begin shooting in January or February of 2018.

Hot on the heels of that revelation, Lights Out director David F Sandberg confirmed he's on board to direct the movie, referring to the story of a young boy who gains powers that rival Superman as the "ultimate wish fulfillment."

Despite the focus on Dwayne Johnson, who's been the focus of all Shazam! news since it was confirmed that he'll be playing Black Adam and see his own solo movie, it turns out Black Adam won't be featured at all in Shazam!'s first outing, leaving his story for his solo movie and/or potential sequels.

Suicide Squad 2 logo

Suicide Squad 2

Suicide Squad may have seen a significant critical backlash upon its release in theaters, but it went on to make a boatload at the box office and even won an Academy Award for hair and makeup. Despite the low Rotten Tomatoes score, Suicide Squad 2 has always been one of the best bets of the DCEU, and rumors had a variety of directors circling, with The Shallows director, Jaume Collet-Serra, currently seen as the frontrunner and a potential production start date in mid-2018.

As another one of the many films promised with WB's Hall H verified slate, it looks like things are rolling along nicely and confirmation on the director and production start date could be confirmed before long, although there is a possibility one of the many rumored Suicide Squad spin-offs could potentially jump into that spot depending on a variety of factors, such as the availability of any returning castmembers.

Wonder Woman 2

With Wonder Woman marking the first unquestionable DCEU success with victory in the eyes of critics and a continued historic box office success, it's been more than obvious that there will be a Wonder Woman 2. Rumors of a sequel have been swirling since even before Wonder Woman hit theaters, but it's finally officially happening since Warner Bros. confirmed its development during the Hall H panel at Comic-Con.

Patty Jenkins hasn't been officially contracted yet (although she's likely to return), but Geoff Johns confirmed in an interview that the movie is well into development as he's already actively writing the script.

Outside of confirmation that it's happening, there wasn't much shared, although we previously broke the scoop that Wonder Woman 2 will see Diana combat the Soviet Union in the 80s during the height of the Cold War with Chris Pine returning, likely to play the grandson of Steve Trevor.

All in all, it was a great Comic-Con for fans of the DCEU, doing more than enough to excite many for Justice League and the future slate of DC movies. Did you have a favorite Comic-Con revelation or something you were hoping to hear more about? Let us hear about it in the comments!
