Europe To Get Even More Excrutiating Version of Death Proof

In my review of Grindhouse, I strongly urged viewers who were not die-hard Quentin Tarantino fans to leave after the first half of the double-feature, Planet Terror. The scenes involving nothing but inane conversation by the female leads almost literally put me in a coma due to the fact that they were excruciatingly boring and as far as I’m concerned, almost pointless. I say almost, because the point was to give us some insight into the characters, but the characters were not deep or interesting enough to warrant what felt like 30 minutes straight of inane conversation.

In any case, it seems that the high-brow journalists at the Cannes Film Festival are fawning all over Tarantino and his ghastly creation, and that the European release of Death Proof (since they’re splitting up Grindhouse into two films over there) is going to be even longer than the U.S. version:

The longer version of Death Proof includes long conversational scenes involving actresses including Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan and Tracie Thoms.

All I can say is: wow, even more inane, boring conversation in that version. I can’t wait to see how our enlightened friends overseas react to this movie once it’s released…

  1. Aghast! I actually liked “Death Proof” more than “Planet Terror” and I don’t consider myself anywhere near the high-brow movie goer territory. Maybe it’s because I’m a girl, not sure, but I’d love to see the longer version.

    Waiting patiently for DVD…

  2. Marina, maybe it IS because you’re female that you didn’t mind the long, interminable conversations. I notice that my wife and her friends tend to talk in a meandering non-sequiter style, albeit at a more intelligent level and without the 30 f-bombs per minute. :-)

  3. Alright, I’ll give into the fact that being a girl made it a little more enjoyable for me.

  4. I’ll be the manpig here, but I heard that the missing reel containing Ferlito’s lapdance got replaced as well.

  5. I have to say I’m a QT fan, but the dialogue was trite this time around, and rather pissed me off. Didn’t care much for these characters this time around except for Rosario and the awesome Stuntwoman.

  6. I hate to chime in on the same side, but of all the “missing reels” to remove… sheesh.

  7. Personally I really liked Death proof and I am a male. The reason is simple all of those inane conversations inevitably to one of the best endings and a great car chase. Not to mention that a lot quentin movies (if not all) revolve around a lot of worse movies that were made before. I love the way he will take some really bad movies and create something so much better, complete evolution of the genre. So mwahh!!!1
