‘Eureka’ Producers On Why The Show Was Canceled and How To End It

Eureka Season 6 SyFy Eureka Producers On Why The Show Was Canceled and How To End It

The news of Syfy canceling Eureka was a shock to everyone – especially to those who create the hit series. After briefly announcing that Syfy had ordered six episodes for Eureka season 6, plans at the network quickly changed and the series was unceremoniously given the axe.

We spoke with Eureka executive producer Bruce Miller a week before the cancelation was announced, and he showed no signs of the series being in trouble. In fact, Miller went as far as to highlight the fact that “we have a bigger audience now than we did in our first season.” This sentiment was certainly championed by co-executive producer Amy Berg following this week’s ratings – and the unfortunate news of the series being canceled.

Said Amy Berg (via Twitter): “Ratings in for last night’s show. They are excellent, and continue to rise with each new episode. The definition of bittersweet, I guess.”

Upon the announcement of Eureka being canceled, Berg revealed exactly why Syfy decided to cancel their long-time staple (that continues to grow in popularity), and it all has to do with profit margins.

“We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company.”

While it can be said that many previous series – Caprica, Stargate Universe, for example – have fallen because of the Comcast-NBCUniversal merger, this is the first time that the reasoning was directly revealed to public. That being said, Berg continues by saying that the executives at Syfy didn’t exactly roll over to their parent company’s wishes.

“Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”

Considering that Syfy is the most forward-thinking network on television (honestly), it’s a bit disheartening to hear that profit margins are coming into play for a series that continues to grow in popularity with every episode. It’s not as if the series wasn’t profitable, it just wasn’t profitable enough.

Eureka Season 5 final Syfy Eureka Producers On Why The Show Was Canceled and How To End It

At a point, this discussion about profit margins becomes humorous. NBC has been digging themselves in hole for years with an ever-changing line-up of television series. With almost every new series they picked up last year being canceled, one might point out that making a profit – even if it’s small – is still better than not making a profit and continuously churning out expensive television pilots which are by and large canceled in their freshman year.

Eureka is, sadly, canceled, and the producers must figure out how they’d like to end the series. In the same conversation we had with Miller, he discussed the talks that have been occurring about how they’d like to end the series, when it came to that point. Unfortunately, that point came quicker than Miller ever thought.

Here’s what Miller had to say about how to end Eureka:

“Our show has been on for seven years – give or take. You want to start thinking about, ‘Ok, if we wanted to end it, how would we end it.’ You have some jokey answers to that, and some more… what would be a satisfying ending, but not something everybody predicts.”

“The expression we always use: you want it to feel just absolutely inevitable, yet unpredictable.”

Even though Eureka is currently filming their fifth and final season (set to premiere in 2012), there is enough time for them to create an appropriate ending for the series. While some storylines may be moved around and shortened, fans need not worry about a ridiculous ending to their favorite series.

Unless, of course, a ridiculous ending is exactly what the producers are aiming for. If that’s the case, I have no doubt that it’ll be sublime.

Eureka airs Mondays @8pm on Syfy.

  1. Could we possibly sell Syfy to producers that really care. I am sure they could cut the trash and find enough $$ to give views what they are asking for. Are the people that make these decisions really care about their views or the shows that they produce. I really enjoyed Eureka and am deeply saddened at its ending. Bring it back,

  2. I just watched the final episode and will admit that I am very disappointed that Syfi has let this show go. What a good hearted fun show to watch.

  3. I am shocked!!! I look forward to this great show and its cast of characters ever week and every day. HOW much money has to be made before the powers that be are satisfied? I am so sick of greedy capitalism and I’m a capitalist!!!!

I’ve had it with what the industry calls “programming”…canned laughing, silly actors, stupid plots all done for those under 20 years old. So they go ahead and cancel one of the 5 top programs on TV. Well, I’ll find better things to do…read, map, garden, help Obama, and write notes to my friends about how cheezie and greedy Comcast is.

  4. Just finished the series finale and will say they did the show justice in its ending. BUT, NBC Universal needs to really think hard about the direction they are going with Syfy because it not only has horrible wrestling on there, but also WAY too many ghost/paranormal shows on there and not enough actual science fiction shows. Eureka is one if the only shows I still watched on the channel and it will be hard for them to keep me as a viewer if they continue with the lack of science fiction shows. Warehouse 13 and Alphas are Ok shows but definitely dont match the caliber of Eureka. Those shows’ lifespan won’t be too long whereas Eureka could’ve their next SG-1 running into 10+ seasons without a problem. It is pathetic how NBC always seems to make poor choices these past few years and continue to wonder why nobody watches their channels anymore. I can’t even name the last NBC show I popped on or even caught a glimpse of. Bad call on the cancellation and i hope they review their decision and think thrice about it because this show could easily keep on going…but they only seem to care about profit margins than any sort of integrity of their channels. Keep running new failing shows and you’ll think back and wonder how you ever lost a gem of a show like Eureka. I’d like to say thank you to the cast, the crew, and the creative of Eureka for keeping me thrilled for the past years…it was truly a one of a kind show!!

    • Couln’t have said it any better, We lost a great program. They will most likely replace it with another reality tv show, I change channels every time one of those come on.

    • Well said. Why must greed and money always get in the way? If a shi^ load of poeple were watching it why weren’t they making enough money? Because it was grenscreened? SO WHAT, find away to go around it. Dont just CANCEL IT, IDIOTS. This show could have gone down in history, but no, nope!! Greedy a holes dont have enough profit, but they were making money…. i dont get it, they were still making money.. isn’t that the point these days? Some poeple dont even have THAT.

Heres an idea, why doesn’t NBC cancel some dumb “fresh-new” comedy that they just rolled out that 1 person watches and actually invest in something that people watch**hint hint**.

    • Too bad that NBC or some other channel can’t pick up Eureka as a sindicate show. The ending left open the possibility that the town and show could go on with a few differances. Why not see if another channel would be interested in this show. Like you I am watching fewer shows on TV and spending more time online doing free sites. I will miss Eureka like I do Star Trek Next Generation, Stargate and a few others. I HATE reality type shows and don’t watch them, however since it is so cheap to produce them, they will make a huge profit on really bad and boring television…

  5. there is a reason Comcast/NBC is a failing network. They keep cancelling quality shows like Eureka, and replacing them with absolute garbage. in fact, i can’t even name one show that i watch on NBC, they have no programs worth watching. As the parent company of SyFy, Comcast/NBC is starting to ruin that network to. Warehouse 13 is the only show i still watch on that network (since the canceled Eureka). everything else is either really low quality or some crappy reality show. I certainly don’t want to watch a couple morons flicker some lights on and off, then call it a ghost. its complete and utter trash (ghost hunters). Since Eureka was one of the most viewed and highly rated shows on the network. Why was it canceled instead of most of trash they air on it?

    • I am with you they could have at least sold the shoe to another network or something . it is their onle real sify show they had .

  6. Surprised that Eureka got canceled; finding out it was an NBC decision held no surprise at all. Eureka was popular and successful which is something NBC does not know what to do with. I am so sad to see this show go. There’s not much on TV that I watch, but Eureka was one show that’s always kept my loyalty. It will definitely be missed.

  7. Comcast and NBC ( Never been caring ) seems like their only interested in running the company into the ground. How else can you explain why they would cancel this show it is one of the best shows on any network and by far the best family show on. Well it looks like the only other show i can watch on syfy is warehouse 13 (even though it is not as good as Eureka ) and with how their track record is going this could be warehouse 13 last season. Then i will no longer watch anything on this network or NBC ( Never been constant ) except in failing. I’m sorry but this is how I feel

    John T.

  8. i have watched every eureka on syfy including stargate uni and when a good show like eureka and stargate i have complated stop watching SYFY they gotten where they dont care about rating and only care about profit like all other companys

  9. i was thinking of canceling my cable and only have internet sence i got netflix and i can find them in the inter to watch

    • that’s actually what i’m doing i mean i can watch all of the good shows on there

  10. Typical! Cancel a cerebral show and replace it with something mindless to dumb down the masses.

    • eureka was my number 2 and stargate was my number 1.. but both of them are getting cancaled look like i be canaling my cable… so no more syfy for me

  11. well nbc, syfy and whoever else is in charge you making alot of mistakes airing real tv shows nobody cares about them but i guess there cheap to make each episode of these ignorant shows lower our i.q.s i refuse to watch
im looking to be entertained i dont need real life hey go watch turtleman or the idiot that wrestles alligators what do those episodes cost 100.00 per i dont care if you remove the shows we like we wont be watching your television!!!!!

  12. That’s exactly why I decided to cancel my cable why support NBC anymore they have no idea what they are doing!!! Oh wait maybe we should give them an award for killing TV!!!

    • Sanctuary was cancelled was it not?

  13. very angry fan and now u see way i have cancel my cable and only have internet

  14. Seriously bring it back. I haven’t seen the finale but get rid of all the other crap you people call television and bring back Eureka.

  15. Will a real science fiction channel please be created by someone who understands the concept? I am tired of greedy corp execs who are more concerned with their own personal wealth than with developing and maintaining a quality show like Eureka. They think that “sci” stands for “Show crap instead.” I am devastated. i loved Eureka

  16. Why cancel this show right as it was getting amazing?

  17. Beacause SyFy ONLY care about money not ratings… and that is way TV is getting worse over time.. i gotten where i watch tv once in a blue moon i am thinkg of canceling my cable and only have internet

    • Hmm, I just hope they don’t pull the plug on Warehouse 13

  18. I seem to agree with everyone here and will add my voice to the crowd. Eureka was a quality program. It was quirky, funny and always original which cannot be said about most of the shows on television these days. I only watch a handful of shows anymore and only one of them is on NBC, while I used to watch six on the Syfy network. Now my choices have dwindled even more. It was nice watching an intelligently presented show about intelligent subjects portrayed in a very human way. Good-bye Eureka, I will miss you!

  19. Eureka is one of the best shows on tv and one of the few that where I bought the season dvd’s. To me its that good of a show. NBC, why kill the cash cow of a great show where if people pay a little bit of attention they might learn a little bit about science and have fun learning at the same time! With all the complaints you had regarding how you handled the Olympics, you blow it with this great show…Why oh why does NBC do such stupid things????

  20. Eureka caught my attention and was truly entertaining. Disappointed to see it go. It does appear that many networks are searching for the “Jerry Springer” audience. Possibly they want to air a reality show following the life of a “Trekkie”. I mean no disrepect, but had there not been Star Trek there would be no following. NBC attempted to cancel them after only two seasons. To truly have a successful franchise the viewer not only needs to be entertained by an amazing story line, but must have a connect with the characters. Fictional, Timeless. (Not Kardashian, here today gone with the wrinkle of an eye.) I am certain many would agree that this was happening with Eureka. There is little airing that I can watch with my family or even desire to watch without them. In the eyes of this commenter, Syfys only redeeming program now is Warehouse 13. Please produce something else that sparks the viewers interest. Something worthy of a following. Otherwise, it may be necessary to dig a hole and bury the Network all together.

  21. I have to agree with everything that everyone else has posted. They canceled one of the most entertaining shows on TV and keep the crap like ghost-hunting shows and wrestling. I am so tired of getting hooked on shows and then having them canceled or disappearing without a trace. Euerka is one of the best shows, with an amazing cast, and great story lines that I have ever seen. Really disapointed with scify and NBC.

  22. When it comes to science fiction, it didn’t get much better than Eureka. It was definately one of my favorite shows on the tube with a cast second to none, but then again I liked Stargate Universe, Star Trek and watch Warehouse 13 religiously, so what do I know anyhow?

  23. This was my favorite show. Will no longer even watch this channel sense they canceled the show

  24. same syfy has gone down hill

  25. The TV stations are always saying that there is not enough profit. Well have you seen in the August 13-26 TV Guide the money some of these stars make. It should be outlawed to pay them that kind of money. No one is worth 45 million a year or $500,000.00 an episode. That is why some of the other shows are chopped bare bones or cancelled to make up for these actors greed. Why do you think our cable bills are always going up in price. Its to pay all these so called big shot actors. I will greatly miss Eureka, it was a really great show. I always looked forward to it.

  26. syfy has cancelled all shows worth watching. I used to be my #1 channel now I very raley watch it

  27. Such a disappointment to hear that Eureka has been cancelled, Love the characters, love the show, love the plots, and can’t believe that it’s been canned due to budgets…there is a severe shortage of quality shows around today, and this is one of them…so sad to see it go. Especially when it is not because it is not popular or has a strong following, rather due to cutbacks. Someone wakeup and smell the money burning, by taking it off air please…see the light and put it back on.
